This "bloated squad" thing.
There was a thread the other day about ins and outs. To me Clough started with a big (and pathetic) squad and got rid of more dross than he brought in. I think the squad he left us with was larger than he would have liked but hardly any bigger, and certainly better, than what he started with.
As for quality, it must be pointed out that less than 2 years ago we were heading on a record breaking spell of clean sheets and an FA Cup semi final with a bunch of players who are largely still around. Seven of the starting 11 at Wembley are still available (albeit 2 years older and off form). Doyle, Coady, Maguire and Murphy are gone from a team were all lauding as promotion candidates in the summer of 2014.
Summer 2014 is where it all went "tits" for whatever reason (best player sold, main targets "missed" or delayed, the Evans factor) and I don't think Clough recovered from that. I don't think the board has now backed Adkins sufficiently (his signings having being way worse than I expected however) and I fear they will react again when the disquiet starts again in earnest. It's a very bad time to be a Blade at the moment and only some patience can get us out of it (or a miracle).
Have a like, to me you have called it exactly right. Summer 2014 was the time. I bought my first season ticket ever because of the good feeling from the previous season and it just never got going.
