It has just occured to me that, of the squad that just missed out on automatic promotion and got to the play off final in 2009, some two and a half years later, only 3 are left - Quinn, Montgomery and Morgan. And perhaps even more astonishingly exactly one year after that final defeat only 5 were left - the above 3 plus Henderson and Ward.

I can't think of a greater turnover of players in United's history and I think it pretty much tells the story of how we turned from a club on the verge of the PL to one struggling to compete with Huddersfield Town.

Fair enough, but you weren't talking of parachute payments, you were talking of turnover of players weren't you.

What about the other play off semi-finalists of that year Reading and Preston, how is their turnover?

Does it tell a story of United or of football in general?

Not entirely sure of the point you're making in this thread Darren.

That we have dismantled a successful side very quickly.

I don't know about the other play off teams, but I would be surprised if they had dismantled as quickly as us. I think you have talked yourself into a research job :-)

Out of the Burnley side; Jensen, Duff, Carlisle (although out on loan), McCann, Rodriguez and Paterson are still there. So that's 6.

Thats out of the 16, so our turnover is twice Burnley's given Quinn, Monty and Morgan were all in our 16.

If you take Preston's 16 that lost in the 2nd leg to us in the semis, they only have two left (Nicholson and Mellor).

Does it count that McDonald was in Burnleys Squad and now we have him in ours. :)

Its fair to say that any side who'd overspent during the parachute payments time would have to seriously change their squad

Can you do it for Reading and see if they have kept more (which would explain why Preston and SUFC went down!)

From their 2nd leg defeat to Burnley, 6 of the 16 remain in their squads today (Pearce, Kebe, Gunnarson, Tabb, Church, Federici)

. . . and Mellor is only there because no-one can afford to take him off them

I envy the squad we had. Its a shame we had Craig Beattie up front in the play off final. We should still have had two pens though.

I still have my signed framed shirt of the squad that year, will never be replaced!

Along the same lines, if we'd received viable offers for Quinn or Montgomery over the summer they'd have left too.

I think that by the end of the January transfer window, only four of the men that started on Saturday will still be in the team

Williams, Phillips and Clarke will have returned to their parent clubs.
Lowton, Maguire and Quinn will attract offers from other clubs and therefore be sold.
Long will be back in the reserves or possibly sent out on loan somewhere
That leaves us with Collins, Monty, McDonald and Creswell.

Of the squad players, Evans, Williamson, Ertl, Taylor, Simonsen and McAllister will be out of contract so we'll be desperate to offload them for a small fee if possible.
Morgan should have recovered from injury by then, so I think we're looking at a team like this for the second half of the season:-

New GK
Parrino, Collins, Morgan, Jean-Francois
Flynn, Montgomery, McDonald, Loan LW
Loan CF, Creswell
Squad:- Long, Ertl, Taylor, Doyle, Tonne, Porter

That's reminded me, where has McAllister disappeared to? I've liked the look of him whenever he's played - decent passer, offers something going forward. I had hoped he'd be much more involved this year - I'm surprised he hasn't been on the bench at the very least.

The Kevin double act saw to one of the fastest demolitions of a talented squad (and systemic replacement with garbage). They did manage to burden us .... I mean capture the 3 of the worst players in that team and offer them long, hefty, grossly overinflated contracts though!

I think it is a pretty good explanation for where we are now Darren. Dismantling a very good team, either replacing them with rubbish or noone at all (and hence havig to relying on loan players) and then some shocking managerial appointments.

Where are they?

-------------------------- Kenny (QPR in Prem)

Walker (Spurs - Prem) Morgs (United still) Killa (Sunderland??) Naysmith (Huddersfield 3rd tier - soon to be 2nd)

Cotts (Swansea - Prem but warming bench)------ Monty (United) Quinn (United still) Halford (2nd tier Pompey)

----------- Howard (Milwall on loan)

---------- Creaig Beattie (Watford on loan? Loanee at United anyway)

He's with the Reserves/"Development Squad" who've played 3 matches in the last 8 weeks and who are next due to play on 16th November.
I'll say again, how on earth are United expecting to develop players when they hardly ever play in a "proper" competitive match?
How are Ertl and Taylor supposed to regain match-fitness? How is Simonsen going to rebuild his shattered confidence?

You have introduced a new topic. so I will continue it!

It looked as if Walker had been pushed in the back as he went down in the area but Dean signalled "no penalty". Has Walker

ever said that he was pushed in the back? After the game Blackwell said, "The result of the match was decided by the

decisions of the referee". I took that to be the nearest he could go to blaming the referee for mistakes (or worse).

I've always been surprised that our fans (and United) have never complained about a Lancashire referee being chosen to

ref our two vital games against Wigan and Burnley especially since crucial and controversial decisions against us were made in

those games.

On the day we didn't turn up. Burnley went ahead through that wonderstrike from Elliott and then looked comfortable for the remaining 75-80 minutes.

That said, on any other day with any other team, the challenge on Walker would have been a penalty. Given the team performance though, we'd probably have missed it...

It was quite late on wasn't it? I wonder who would have taken it. Cotterill, who'd taken all of them I think in the 2nd half of the season, was removed after about an hour. Had we been awarded it, who out of the following on the pitch (who have probably taken one in their career) would you have wanted to take it?

Howard, Beattie, Ward, Halford, Quinn

I'd have probably gone with Halford....

They play quite a few friendlies. Beat Leeds reserves today 4-1. Tønne, Murray, Pomares and a trialist scored.

Wednesday have ditches their Reserves as have several other clubs so their squad players get by on training

We still play behind doors friendlies...

For all the wailing about dismantling the squad, is there any team with more than a handful of the same squad members they had three seasons ago..?

It would have been hugely ironic if the much reviled Beattie had taken it and scored and thus become a Blades hero had we gone on to win in extra time.

Thanks for the info but how do you know? There's nothing about it on our official website.
Did Ertl, Taylor or Simonsen play? Any idea who the trialist was? Did Leeds put out a strong team?
I personally can't see how playing "behind closed doors" in a training-ground kickabout is going to develop players ready for the first team.
Why can't they play Leeds Reserves in a friendly at Bramall Lane and allow people in for a nominal fee to cover expenses?

You're avin a larf entyer? Beattie 2 scoring from 12 yards - pah!

we had a go at getting up got to the play off final , this means speculating to accumulating , ie upping the wage bill

we missed out , and unfortunately had to cut our cloth
all clubs now have more transient squads, look at blackpools squad today to 3 years ago, look at most clubs
Players seem to move more often , theres far more loans

We only changed the squad to meet the income, not to line anyones pocket

We didnt decimate it

why do people use such emotive words
Are these are the same people who on the day we lost to Burnley probably called that squad useless in the first place.

Twitter is the source... don't know any more than what I put. Agree with you that a bigger reserve league would be much better for the likes of McAllister and Tønne. Not sure if we could have kept the trialist a secret though.
