Yes! It was played on the 12th March 1892. We beat them 2-1 in the Sheffield Challenge Cup.

They were Wednesdays reserves. United reserves were called Sheffield Strollers at that time

Did they play in the same Pontins league as Barnsley Breadcaskes?

In that season United were still playing their first team in the Sheffield Challenge Cup whilst Wednesday were playing their reserves. Hence that fixture.

From the following season United also play a reserve team in the competition and both teams continued to enter reserve teams until the 20s.

The SCC is stull going (now generally referred to as the senior cup) but the top non league local teams, though Barnsley entered their U21 game this season.

Lots of other league teams enter U21 sides in their local county cups. It would be nice if United did, I think.

Yes the Wanderers were massive & took 3,000 to the game.

I remember it well. They all wore cummerbunds and cravats - very classy they were. And they sang their famous anthem "Hi Ho Wednesday Wanderers" seventy five years before it was written.

We have a version down here - the Sussex Senior Cup. Horsham beat Brighton and Hove Albion (reserves/kids) last night.

Yes, there's one for each (footballing) county. Sheffield and Hallamshire is it's own county. Some have professional club youth/reserve teams entering and some don't.
