That opening away day hoo-doo…

Just seen that we’ve only won one game away on the opening day of the season since 1989…..

Sorry to bring doom and gloom, but that’s a fucker of a statistic when you’re set to face Watford at their gaff first up ain’t it.

But balls it, statistics are there to be overturned, the last time they did it being apparently 2011 away at Oldham.

Source- Twatter…. Verified using research, nah. Seems legit .
Was there, the season of the iconic away shirt and Deane and Agana tearing the division up.

Same again this season, the iconic Sabella away shirt and Brewster and Jebbo tearing the division up.

Only difference this year is the away end wont be full of the away shirts...have we discussed that on another thread 😀...at WBA it looked like the away end was full of stewards bouncing around for Deane and Aganas rampage

Away first game since I've been going regularly:

1982-3 Portsmouth L 1-4
1984-5 Wolves D 2-2
1985-6 Stoke W 3-1
1988-9 Reading W 3-1
1989-90 WBA W 3-0
1991-2 Norwich D 2-2
1995-6 Watford L 1-2
1996-7 Reading L 0-1
1999-00 Portsmouth L 0-2
2001-2 Forest D 1-1
2002-3 Coventry L 1-2
2004-5 Burnley D 1-1
2008-9 Birmingham L 0-1
2009-10 Middlesbrough D 0-0
2010-11 Cardiff D 1-1
2011-12 Oldham W 2-0
2015-16 Gillingham L 0-4
2016-17 Bolton L 0-1
2019-20 Bournemouth D 1-1
Went to every one of those between 96/97 and Bournemouth in 2019 but hadn’t realised our first day record was so bad.

Agree with previous posts that Gillingham was dreadful.

Reading 96/97 will stay in my Dad’s mind until his dying day, in fact we were only reminiscing about it last week. We were awful that day and in taking a detour to avoid a motorway accident on the way home we saw Kendall and the Blades team disembarking the team coach in a village in Middleton Stoney (or Stoney Middleton, I always forget which is which!) all laughing and joking without a care in the world on their way into the pub.

I was only 6 but I can still clearly remember the views my Dad shared through the car window on our way past.

That was a non performance on a blazing hot day. Jimmy Quinn scored, of course.

It was doubly annoying because the last away game of the previous season had also been away at Reading and we had stuffed them 3-0.

The team did not do itself justice that season.
