Just seen that we’ve only won one game away on the opening day of the season since 1989…..

Sorry to bring doom and gloom, but that’s a fucker of a statistic when you’re set to face Watford at their gaff first up ain’t it.

But balls it, statistics are there to be overturned, the last time they did it being apparently 2011 away at Oldham.

Source- Twatter…. Verified using research, nah. Seems legit .

Good job we don't play on the opening day then ;)

I am still getting over the Gillingham debacle.

HH
40 years on, I still shudder at the opening day debacle at Portsmouth in 1982.
Only managed to get into the ground at half time thanks to the "hospitality" shown to a small group of us by the Pompey fans.

I still despise Portsmouth supporters to this day.

Fancy us to beat Watford though.

Same here, though I managed to get in just before half time after out-pacing them running away from the ground when we got rumbled outside their end a few mins before kick-off!
You weren't on a mini bus with 'Sheffield Auto Hire' on it were you? Stopped near Oxford I think on the way back?

From memory went to the first 6 on that list plus forest, Burnley and Oldham

Went on the football special to Portsmouth on my own aged 11 years old. What on earth were my parents thinking.

I was only 21 at the time and was on a mini-bus with a group of about a dozen older blokes from the Old Harrow at Grenoside - cant remember who it was rented from though.
Got to the ground about 12.30ish as some of them thought it would be a good idea to go in Pompey's supporters club for a drink !!!
Basically, we got ambushed by approx 30 of their fans as soon as we reached Fratton Park and three of us ended up being chased down to Southsea. We even took refuge in a house to escape the bastards.
I saw about 20 minutes of the second half before a group decision was taken to head back to Sheffield. I think we stopped at a place called Weston-on-the Green on the way home.

An absolutely shit day out.

Tony was the landlord of the Harrow at the time, and a big Blade. He may have been on the bus 🙂

Tony was a good friend of mine but I don't think he was with us that day. I used to go in the Harrow regularly with a two lads I worked with, Tony Bickers and Brian Pearson. Lost touch with all of them sadly.

Different bus then mate.
I think we lost 4-1 after scoring first didn't we?
We arrived about five to three, the coppers had gone and we accidentally wandered over to the Fratton Park end not knowing where to get in. It kicked off and 3 or 4 pairs of hands grabbed me. I managed to fight free and set off running. I looked behind to see loads chasing after me until one by one they stopped.
Even after the game, they were following us in cars. One was hanging out of the passenger side swinging a crow bar at the mini bus as we sped along the motorway!
We stopped somewhere near Oxford and I just couldn't relax. I kept expecting them to turn up any second and start it all over again.
Even when I finally got dropped off at home I remember looking up and down the street to make sure the bastards hadn't followed me!!
Took me ages to get over it.

Was on a coach from the ground that day.
Turned up at Pompey about 1.30pm. Little roundabout close to ground. Promptly got bricked. Bloody freezing trip home with several windows smashed!!

When we played there last game of season another time 28k in ground. About 1,500 blades stood in the corner area. We promptly beat them 2-1 to stop them going up as Champions. They invaded pitch at the end of game. Hugh numbers trying to get in our end.

Hated them since those visits too!!

2 ways to look at our opening record......it's likely to continue, or surely we're due a good result!

It's a tougher game than most, but I'm feeling optimistic. First matches can be unpredictable, why not go and get a win!💪

TBH I would rather have a hoo doo than a hoe down like what they have down Barnsley way.

Watford, on the other hand, have lost only one of their last 15 opening league games... although they haven't won at home in the league since October 2021 (13 games, 12 of which were defeats).

I expect Elton John’s men will smash us on opening day, with their recently experienced premier league squad and parachute payments. Still we rarely start well do we, but should be ok over the whole season.

What parachute payments?

Unless something has changed that I’ve missed, Watford will be getting parachute payments after getting relegated last season, no?
I was under the impression you had to be in the league 2 seasons to get them but I could be entirely wrong on that

Be in league 2 to get premier league parachute payments?!!

Blades had them last year and i'm sure we get a smaller amount this year as well.

Yeah but we were in league for for 2 seasons. Watford weren’t
