Can’t realistically begrudge him leaving for a better offer. His stock was high after his season as the fantasy premier league darling, after a pretty middling career up to that point so can’t hate him for trying to maximise his earnings.

We can however begrudge him phoning it in and neshing challenges for almost an entire season, contributing in no small part to a horrible year for the club. Presumably because he didn’t want to risk said meal ticket.

I don’t begrudge him much tbh. Made a good career from that purple patch and why wouldn’t he. Can’t remember much about the performances towards the end as the club was going down with a whimper regardless.

I don’t understand how this “phoning it in” narrative set hold. I never ever saw it. He rode the crest of a wave with us and was very effective for a short period of time. Then he reverted to the mean - ie. not quite as good. I can only think fans are resentful that a player they didn’t rate overall chose a bigger offer instead of staying with us. How dare he not realise that actually he’s shit etc.

He was accusing (accurately) of sacking it off long, long before he moved. It's nothing to do with him going to another club.

EDIT: Also, if it's true that we got into his head, that's why he got sent off and that's what won us the game, then good, fuck him.

He completely stopped doing the things that made him look good. Defending, getting in the box, being tactically aware, keeping it sinple

In the second prem season, He was at fault for plenty of goals, got run past and didn’t bother with intense recovery runs. I don’t think he scored much if any. His average rating on the S2 rating system dropped from 6.6 to 4.4. And all because Berge joined and he wanted a new contract as one of the best paid members of the squad.
Amazingly pig headed Wilder kept selecting him, it was crazy, he should have been bombed out ASAP or just sold at Christmas for £50k

I never saw a player downing tools. I just saw a player who was being regularly outplayed by Premier League opposition! But I think we may just disagree on that.

That's fine to disagree on that, but I do think you're wrong to say it stems from resentment over his move. He was very unpopular on here long before that.

There was one particular game I remember where he gave the ball away with an awful pass in a dangerous area in and around right back and then didn’t even bother running back to try and regain possession. We conceded and he just dropped his shoulders and wandered back to half way.

Then there was the goal he scored against Bournemouth off the bench when he shoved his team mates off him during the celebrations and started pointing at himself after being dropped to the bench for Berge.

I won’t ever begrudge a player moving for more money, but I’m pretty certain he wasn’t putting 100% in once he knew we weren’t going to pay him what he wanted.

I think you’re misunderstanding me. Or probably more likely my post wasn’t completely clear. I wondered if that narrative “set hold” because of how he left. Ie. To the point he’s getting booed today. I knew the narrative existed before he left.

He gave the impression that he didn't like it here despite being part of an absolute miracle, I don't mind admitting that offended me deeply, particularly because he was always inferior to Coutts, Norwood and Fleck.

Silly things will contribute towards his reputation too, like being our highest scoring player in Fantasy Football and everyone thinking he was our best player, having a mardy face and being Scouse.

Doesn't deserve to be hated, but I booed him today because it's my job as a fan.

I did. Regularly.

I even remember watching Sky Sports Soccer Saturday one afternoon when we played Southampton and lost at BL (i was working down south) and even the reporter at the game who was impartial was disgusted with the lack of effort shown by Lunnycunt and was highly critical. Leeds away another example where he could hardly be arsed to move (remember seeing a United player tearing past him trying to stop a goal for them whilst he casually walked back and didnt put any challenge in - it was downright disgraceful). He completely downed tools for the vast majority of that season, and i can only assume you were either very very forgiving of his 'efforts' or the mists of time has dulled your memory of this.

There is a reason he is still intensely disliked by the vast majority of United fans. I wonder why that is.... maybe we just dont like people with the initials JL...or maybe its because we remember someone phoning it in and taking the piss out of us. Hes a charlatan and i dislike the chap (on a so called professional foorballer perspective), intensely. He can continue to go feck himself, the unprofessional (but still liked to be paid his very nice wages) twat. Some of us dont forget.
