Defensive yes, putting an undercooked Kilgallon into the back 4 to get bullied by (Carew I think). Letting Ashley Young run pretty much unchecked througout the match and letting Villa dictate for the entire 90 minutes no. His inability to adapt tactics to the situation was obvious to all. Had we lost 1-0 or 2-1 all would have been fine but there wasn't a flicker of life from us even at 2-0 down to say we were going to try and score a goal.

We were sat when they read the teams out saying we could be in a bit of bother here.

I agree with that. At 2-0 down, it didn't matter whether we lost 2-0, 3-0 or 8-0, the position in the Wigan match would have been the same. We should then have gone all out to get a goal and, if we had got one, ten men behind the ball again.

If NW really did think a 0-2 defeat would be better than a 0-3 defeat, he really does want shooting.

I've never understood why people criticise NW for playing defensively at Villa. We needed a point to be safe against a team technically better than us. A 1-0 defeat would also have been an ok result (that would have left Wigan needing to win by 2) 10 men behind the ball and parking the bus seems a eminently reasonable tactic in that context.

I agree but I seem to remember reading somewhere (maybe in Warnock's autobiography?) that he didn't know the implications of a heavy (i.e. 2 goal+) defeat by Villa when we played them. I worked out it out in my head while driving to my Dad's to watch the match, so it was very negligent of Warnock not to have known, if it's true. Maybe I imagined it?

Lets not forget that this is the same football club that:

• Signed the TPA
• Lied repeatedly to the FA about it
• Didn't plead Guilty at the first time of asking
• Had 3 months to prepare their defence
• Plead Guilty right at the end of the season
• Asserted that the TPA was torn up, and that tevez was "theirs" for the next 3 years
• Sold a £30m pound player, who was under contract, for £2m - at their own behest

However, the PL aren't totally blameless - if they hadn't allowed it to drag on so long, deducting points might still have been an option. I've yet to see a clarification statement from the PL of when exactly it becomes "too late" in the season to deduct points?

I'm a big Warnock fan but I was staggered when I first read that, I still am. At least I didn't imagine it!

Absolutely not, there is blame to go round to everyone (including SUFC, it shouldn't have been our issue, this thread should instead be talking about Wigan's final settlement payments about to be received from WHU).

As far as I can see it the PL/FA are to blame for:

• Taking WHU's word at face value
• Taking far to long to investigate
• Not withdrawing Tevez's registration as soon as it appeared there was something wrong (i.e. in January)
• Scheduling the hearing for the last week in April, and not after the season (in an attempt IMO to make the issue null and void, they though WHU would be down by then)
• Announcing the punishment the day before two vital relegation 6 pointers, again it should have been after the end of the season
• Not immediately preventing him from playing the next Day
• Jumping through hoops to ensure he continued to play in their remaining games
• Taking WHU word that the TPA was "torn up"
• Not remaining neutral, when 2 members were disagreeing
• Not immediately reopening the investigation when WHU, entirely off their own back and not as a result of any TPA, took 1/15 of market value for an asset that they had asserted their rights over

I remember sitting in my back garden with friends hearing WHU go 2 up on Bolton. We all knew that GD was looking like it might have an effect.

The reality is, we don't know if we were the third worst team in the a PL 2006-07 season run according to its rules, because the PL that season was not run according to its rules. West Ham broke those rule and sanction was imposed on them in the only way that would have mattered - deduction of those rule - indeed I think there is a very strong argument for saying that all games in which the players played illegally should have been awarded to the opposition. That, of course, would have relegated WHU by a mile and the Wigan game would not have mattered.

What is the difference between West Ham enhancing their performances on the pitch by using players that they should not have been using, and Ben Johnson enhancing his 100 metres running capabilities by using banned performance enhancing substances? Noone argues that he should have retained his olympic gold medal and Karl Lewis settle for silver.

Yes, matters should be sorted out on the pitch. But how can that occur when one team is gaining an unfair advantage. All sides are to some extent dependent on what other sides do (unless they win every game). What West Ham did affected us more than most other sides in the premier league at that time, because West Ham were in the same area of the table as us and were therefore more of a direct competitor.

There is little doubt that we threw away a good points cushion, but we were never-the-less disadvantaged by what West Ham did and in a close finish that could be (and probably was) crucial.

It still was an option. Don't buy that bullshit line about unfair on the fans crap.

In fact, if you are going to deduct points from a team, there is a very good argument you should do it as late (if not after) the end of the season. Thus ensuring every other team who played the team who were deducted points played them in the same situation.

We were'nt good enough end of story. Shit at villa. Bottled it at home to wigan after spanking west ham a few weeks before that. Since then we've been relegated again lost 2 play-offs and west ham have been relegated and promoted. While we wollow in self pity and play the blame game other teams are overtakin us. If were not careful were going to end up sounding like them fuckers from s6. UTB.

That is astonishing.

I don't believe for a minute that NW, SM and BK had not sad down and worked out all the mathematical ramifications going into the Villa game and based their tactics on that. Which raises the question as to why he put that in his book. Presumably because he thought it read more dramatically, when it actually makes him look like an arse.

Entirely agree. More and more I am coming to the view that there should just be a blanket rule that if you use an ineligble player the game in which he is used is awarded 2-0 to your opponent (unless your opponent wins by two goals or more anyway in which case the result stands). That would put a stop to these shenanigans.
