Chaps,

Suspect promotion will be won/lost by the results against teams in-and-around us, not by results against the likes of Yeovil, Bury etc. Not got good track-record so far, result/performance t'morrow will give us a clue.

We played those teams early season. Remember Phillips and Clarke? a lot panicked when they went back. We have lost one since . The team has learned together and are really confident in eachother and also work for eachother.

I'm not so sure. I don't think there are enough teams "in and around". The top 3 or 4 seem to be way ahead. So I think the Bury's etc make a big impact.

Either way, our form's been steadily improving. I think we shouldn't read too much into previous results.

Absolutely right. 6 or 8 games can't win you promotion. We're top of the form table at present; stay there and we'll go up. Beating Charlton and the pigs won't get us promoted, but beating every other team in the division consistently will.

Although Charlton.Hudds the pigs are important games the run in against teams lower in the league are the important ones if you don't lose to them you have a great chance at promotion.
It is often the teams that you don't expect to lose to that throw the wrench into the works, not just those going for promotion but the teams fighting against relegation.
We have a favorable run in we must take advantage of it to go up.

I took the liberty of looking up the record of United's previous 4 promotions, in 1984, 1989, 1990 and 2006. Against the top six clubs, our record is as follows:

1984: P10 W3 D3 L4 PTS12
1989: P10 W4 D5 L1 PTS17
1990: P10 W2 D4 L4 PTS 10
2006: P10 W4 D4 L2 PTS 16

Against the bottom five:

1984: P10 W6 D3 L1 PTS 21
1989: P10 W4 D0 L6 PTS 12
1990: P10 W8 D2 L0 PTS 20
2006: P10 W6 D2 L2 PTS 20

Currently, obviously nowhere near complete but the top 6 record in 2011/12 is:

P5 W1 D1 L3 PTS 4

Against the bottom five: W5 D0 L1 PTS 15

Obviously people can take what they want from these statistics, they dont necesarily mean owt but in some years we have done better against the top, e.g. 1984 we took 12 pts from the top teams but 21 from the bottom, and in 1989 we took only 12 points from the bottom 5 but 17 from the top 6.

I still maintain that if we win all our remaining home games (9) and win at swine cottage, Huddersfield and Milton Keynes, we will go up, although that will be far from as easy as it looks on paper. They key is to avoid silly defeats like the ones we suffered at Wycombe in September.

If I may take a quick trip to Clichetown, it's still three points at the end of the day no matter who you play.

I predict if we get 37 points from 20 games no matter whom they are against, we will get promoted. Simple.
