What team do we select against Preston? Time to rest a few, but only so many because of the cup tied lot we’ve just signed.
A couple could do with a rest and this is the ideal opportunity for it. I would have rested Basham but now CCV has gone and Leonard is cup tied I’m not sure we can in the current formation but I’d play Henegan unless he’s gone to Rotherham by then.

Think we should see how Thomas is at LWB as well before deciding to loan him out.

Cup tied: Leonard, Evans, Holmes.

So for me:

Moore (Blackman if fit)
Baldock - Henegan - Wright - Lafferty - Thomas
Lundstram - Fleck
Duffy
Billy - Wilson

Blackman/Moore, Stearman, Bash? Davies, Slater, Carruthers, Donaldson (on for Wilson after 60)

Thoughts?

The new signings being cup tied is a real pain in the arse here. We have Villa only 3 days later, who now don't have a game on Saturday. I want us to have a go in the FA Cup but we can hardly be going full strength.

If Heneghan plays he can't go out on loan thanks to the ridiculous 2 club rule.

I think this would give a balance between resting players but also giving us a decent chance of getting through... (once you're in 5th round you're on a decent cup run.....)

Obviously this line up might not be possible if some of these go out on loan next week...

Moore for Blackman if necessary. Look to bring Fleck and Wilson off after about an hour.

Shame Freeman not fit yet as it'd be a good game for him to have a run out...

I'd really like Eastwood to be given a competitive opportunity so we could see how he fares, surely also he'd relish such a chance.

Freeman can have a run out in the 5th round. ;)

Blackman [if fit]

.........Bash.....Wright......JOC
Balders.............................Lafferty
.............Lunny.......Fleck...............
......................Duffy......................
............Sharp........The Don...........

Bench : Eastwood, Clark, Wilson, Slater, Stevens, Stearman and one other from Carruthers,Thomas or Lavery, depending who may have gone out on loan.

As said above we can't play Henneghan or it scuppers any loan move.

I would like to give JOC a rest, along with Baldock before Villa but I don't see how we can spare them. At least we will have a midfield trio of Leonard, Evans and Holmes to fill any void caused by tiredness or injuries before that game, or we could potentially deploy Leonard in a defensive role if Baldock or Bash [unlikely in his case] needs a break. Clarke and Wilson back up top, although Billy and the Don should still be fresh [ish].

JOC got a rest in the Ipswich tie, so should start, as should Basham, Lundstram, Lafferty, Sharp. Fairly relaxed about the others to be honest – Carruthers if still here, plus Blackman if fit, should also feature.

———————-Eastwood——————-—
-—-Henaghan—-Wright—-Youngster?——
Lafferty———————————Thomas—
—————Lundstram—Slater—————
————————Duffy—————————
————-Sharp—————Donaldson——-

JOC has played a lot of games, although probably the least injury prone in the squad pointless risking. Surely there’s a u23 CB who deserves a crack.
With freeman still out not worth risking Baldock having just come back from injury.
I’d go with slater over carruthers as we’d get over run in midfield with Duffy and Samir in same team.
James Wilson has a terrible injury record, so I reckon either him or Donaldson will start Saturday then the other Tuesday

If Heneghan is unable to play then put JOC back in

The is still the FA cup and although it’s only the 4th round a potential 5th round tie and vying is worth a lot in terms of future budget for Wilder.
So it’s a tough call, on one hand I want a fully fit squad for Villa, nice and sharp and ready for the game. So looking at resting Fleck, Leon and others like Stevens and Baldock who’s position means a lot of running. But taking those out of the side along with the cup tied lads really does weaken us significantly.

Perhaps a compromise would be to decide who’s starting Villa first and look back accordingly.
Team that started Norwich may be the team starting Villa. Wilson needs game time for fitness so he starts Preston as a certainty for me. I would play him in the Duffy role with Donaldson and Sharp up top as he can carry the ball and run at players while timing runs in behind.
Midfield I would put in Lundstram and Slater to rest Fleck and reduce booking risk for the three big games coming up.
Lafferty on the left while crucially adding in Wright to the middle three and pushing Bash out to the right to rest Baldock.

Bench- Leon, Baldock, Duffy, Evans C, Lavery, (academy defender).
Fleck gets the weekend off to do what he wants. More or less ever present for a year.

I’d go with:
Blackman (if fit)
Stearman Wright O’Connell
Baldock Lafferty
Lundstrum Fleck
Duffy
Sharp Donaldson
Subs: Moore, Basham, Freeman (if Fit), Stevens, Slater, Evans, Wilson. Haven’t included Henighan, Thomas, Carruthers and Lavery; presuming they will get loaned out this week. I would like Freeman to get a run out, but sounds too early, it’ll give Baldock bit of a rest is well.

agree with that, maybe share RWB with basham as I think they both could do with a rest but there's no one else.

Why do people think we will completely change our formation.

Yes a tweak here and there but not 4at the back.

Would hope to see Slater featuring at some point. Did well in his last game, didn't disappoint, and it seems an ideal opportunity to play the lad. Would be good for his self-esteem and for us. From all accounts Slater didn't shirk what was asked of him, so to ignore this would be shortsighted, and it definitely needs rewarding. The lad won't get too many first team games at the moment, but a cup game seems to have exactly the right ingredients for club and player.

I think we need to give Baldock a break, especially as Freeman is still in recovery, would be good to test Leonard's versatility. The outside left for Villa, has so much pace, we need a fully fit Baldock, he was dragged every centimetre of the length of the pitch in the swat fixture.

Blackman
Basham Wright O'Connell
Baldock Lundstram Carruthers Lafferty
Thomas
Sharp Evans/Wilson

Bench: Evans/Wilson. Duffy. Slater. Stevens. Stearman. Donaldson. Eastwood

Srrongest possible team with a view to winning and getting a top prem team at home.Bring in the new guys again for Villa.

Against the tractors:

Moore

Baldock
Bash
Wright (60 mins)
Jack
Stevens

Fleck (60 mins)
Lundstrum
Duffy

Clarke
Clayton (60mins)

Against those villains on Tuesday:

Moore

Baldock
Bash
Stearman
Jack
Stevens

Evans
Leonard
Fleck

Wilson
Clayton (yes again)

Assuming all of the fringe players are gone I'd go with:
Blackman
Graham Stearman Wright
Basham Lundstram Slater Lafferty
Duffy
Sharp Wilson

Subs: Eastwood, Norrington-Davies, JOC, Stevens, Fleck, Donaldson, C.Evans (?)
Think we really need Baldock fit against Villa so wouldn't risk injury, even if it means playing Bash out of position, big shame its a little early for Freeman. I was very impressed with Graham vs Wednesday u23s so would like to see him get some game time while we're a little short at the back. Wilson off after an hour for Ched ideally.

Blackman
Basham Stearman Wright
Thomas Lundstram Carruthers Lafferty
Duffy
Clarke Sharp

Eastwood, O'Connell, Baldock, Slater, Brooks, Ched, Wilson

Donaldson and Wilson against Villa with them having an old Terry at the back and Elmohamady pushing forward. Could really do with Freeman being fit aswell as I think Baldock should be rested, Adomah is a nightmare.

I some times wonder about the benefits of resting players, I've seen so many games where in the supposed bigger game afterwards it's appeared to have been more disruptive to the flow of the team than beneficial.
Also although giving players who are not regulars in the team a game to give them confidence maybe a good policy in theory, dropping them if they get you to the later stages can't be that good for their confidence can it ?

Probably go something like Blackman (if available) - O'Connell, Wright, Stearman - Lafferty, Thomas - Lundstram, Slater, Duffy - Sharp, Donaldson. Would like to give JOC a rest but would definitely be prioritising the wing backs and players like Basham who can fill a number of roles.

Sharp has 2 goals in his last 8 league games. Which is coincidentally the same stat for Clarke. Perhaps worth pairing them together vs Preston, hoping at least one of them bags a goal, while starting Donaldson with Wilson in the Villa game.

I think we need to give Baldock a break, especially as Freeman is still in recovery, would be good to test Leonard's versatility. The outside left for Villa, has so much pace, we need a fully fit Baldock, he was dragged every centimetre of the length of the pitch in the swat fixture.

Leonard is cup tied unfortunately. Right wing back is a position where we have little back up at the moment. In addition to Freeman, Bennett from the U23s also has a long term injury.

...............................Moore.............................

...........Stearman.....Wright......Lafferty...........

...Basham......................Norrington Davies...

............................Lundstram.........................

.................Duffy.....................Thomas...........

.......................Sharp..........Lavery.................

Subs: Eastwood, Stevens, Baldock, Slater, Donaldson, Carruthers, Ched (if fit).

Keep JOC, Fleck, Clarke and Wilson at home. Only bring Baldock and Stevens on if pushed into it. Try and give Slater, Carruthers and Ched a run out, obviously depending on how the match is going, I fancy this team to cause Preston a lot of problems. Struggling for a RWB but I’ve put Basham there just to give Baldock a rest, Basham is a great athlete and can play every game.

I’d rotate a fair bit. Integrate some youth.

Blackman
Bennett Basham Wright JOC Lafferty
Lundstram Slater
Duffy
Sharp Evans

Subs: Eastwood, Graham, Baldock, Norrington-Davies, Carruthers, Thomas, Wilson.

Think for this game you have to work backwards; work out which players need a break, then fill their positions with the remaining squad.

Players who I would rest/wouldn't risk; Moore, JOC, Stearman, Baldock, Fleck, Clarke.

Therefore;

Blackman or Eastwood

Thomas
Heneghan
Wright
Lafferty
Stevens

Lundstram
Basham
Duffy

Sharpe
Wilson (if not cup tied)

Subs; Evans (?), Slater, Norrington-Davies, Lavery, Carruthers, GK, Baldock

Not sure if a Fleck caution gets added to his league cautions (don't really know how it all works). But if so then I suggest he's not chosen and in fact doesn't come anywhere near the ground.

I agree about players needing a rest. The other way to look at it is players who may benefit from more games to get on a roll, namely Wilson.
I'd include the other new guys as well but if they're cup tied then stick to a similar team that beat Ipswich, with the exception of the strikers. Sharp should play in this one i think.

My take from Wilder’s pre-match interview is that we’ll see the cup-tied trio start against Villa, and the players they’re directly competing with start on Saturday. Evans if involved will be on the bench – Freeman and Brooks not fit enough yet to be involved at all. So:

Blackman
Basham, Wright, O’Connell
Baldock Lundstram Carruthers Lafferty
Duffy
Sharp, Wilson

C.Evans and Norrington-Davies to get some gametime from the bench.
