Team v Oldham

Personally I would definitely take the pitch, Oldhams physicality and lack of goals conceded, (5 less than us!) into account....it will definitely be a tight game.

If I was CW, (which thankfully for you lot I'm not!) I would go for the following;

Basham EEL/Wright JOC

Freeman, O'Shea

Duffy, Fleck, Carruthers

Sharp, Hanson

Rest Coutts, it's not going to be a game for drag backs and silky passing....O'Shea is very similar to Lafferty so would be better IMO at LWB than Done/JOC. I would rather see Wright marshaling the back 3 but think he will stick with EEL.

I'm sure they could handle it, but Oldham will be more used to it than us and handling it individually doesn't mean we'd be able to do the same things as a team - it will be more difficult to pass the ball regardless. I can see the reasoning for keeping things the same but I think the reasoning for certain players to be selected outweighs it on this occasion. It will be interesting to see what Wilder goes with.

I've mentioned on another thread I think Saturday with the pitch being muddy we go long ball. Put Hanson and McNulty up front , Done at left back and possibly put Reed in midfield as doesn't matter if any of them get injured?

I can see the Matt Done bashers are out in force. Still not sure what he's done that's so wrong, oh apart from not scoring a million goals, how very dare he call himself a striker, but hey let's gloss over the contribution he's made this season.

I'm finding that defending or admitting to liking Done is like saying you voted for Brexit.

Regardless, I actually hope he doesn't play LWB as he's not a defender (whisper it quietly, but he's a forward). I'd prefer to see either Wright come back and JOC move out there, Basham playing RWB and Freeman moves over to LWB or bring Hussey in. With regard to formation, can't see CW changing it unless the way Oldham play demands it. Not sure that's going to happen as his reasoning v Charlton was because they had very good players, but Oldham haven't really.

Agree entirely we don't need to worry about the oppostion that's their job to try and adapt their tactics and personnel to combat the league leaders strengths.

In no way is he an obvious replacement for Lafferty. He's primarily a central attacking midfielder with no great appetite for defending. We'll see if Wilder plays him there. If we go 3-5-2 with only one change it will be Done LWB, whether we like it or not. Moving O'Connell there and changing the back 3 is the next most likely. And Basham can easily cope at wing back, on the right at least. But I wouldn't want Freeman on the left.

Done is a disaster in that role and Hussey is a huge gamble. His crossing is good but he is an appalling defender.
O'Shea is a potent attacking threat and a better crosser than Lafferty,as good as Hussey and way better than Done. He dosen't need to be great defensively to be better than Done or Hussey.
Freeman is not a very good defender but has had an excellent season on the opposite side.

They're quite a hard team to beat, but it's not just Oldham is it, it's the pitch as well.

There's a good chance we will change formation because Basham is probably as likely to start in midfield as he is in defence.

For what it's worth I think Wilder will probably go with this...

Then there's the flexibility to switch to 3-5-2 with JO'C moving to LWB.

3-5-2 with Done is probably equally likely though.

Don't understand all the hating on Done. He may be out of the first team but he's done a decent job during his time at the Lane.

This could be one for him. He's the best at chasing lost causes, and could be most effective on a dodgy pitch when the ball rolls slowly.

Being a wing back isnt about chasing lost causes though.

Yes but I never felt he looked comfortable. Maybe he'd do better now at LWB and in a better team but we have the options not to have to resort to playing him there.

Wilder is reluctant to play right footed players even at left centre back and left central midfield, so it would be a big surprise if he played a right footer at left wing back.

Why are we so worried about the mighty Oldham? yes the pitch may be crap but we haven't just been winning our home games this season. for Christ sakes leave 3-5-2 alone and give Hussey a chance as we brought him to be an attacking full back and in his defence he's never been given a chance in this system. I hardly think it wise to be shuffling a whole team or to crowbar an attacking midfielder in. Wilder signed Hussey as a league 1 left back I'm sure he's solid enough for one game and let the midfield trio and billy do their thing.

Agree about Done, but I am not comfortable with O'Shea there when he's never played there. If there is no formation change stick O'Connell at lwb because he has proven himself quite useful getting forward anyway then bring in wright for lafferty. This is more than likely to be a game won by set pieces due to the pitch so would add needed height in both boxes.

He did indeed play on the left, but that was for 10 minutes, during wave after wave of attack, v 10 men.

I agree completely that we shouldn't re-jig formation, but don't think O'Shea is anywhere near the answer for that role.

Hussey was poor in a crap defence in a mediocre team.

CW changed that by bringing Lafferty, EEL, Wright and Coutts in and we are now a completely different team. I happen to think that Hussey might be a little bit rusty but won't let us down.

He is a left back, O'Shea is not.

I'm happy to trust CW but I'm also confident Hussey won't let us down.
