I normally have a decent feeling on our starting XI for the weekend but it feels like we're fast running out of options. Arguably the most crucial position in our entire team - the central midfield anchor - doesn't appear as though it has anyone who can play it particularly well right now with everyone else falling around them. Berge isn't ready for the responsibility (and might never have the capability), Norwood is getting overrun in midfield (particularly due to the wing backs being pinned back as per
Bergen Blade) and Ampadu, sadly, doesn't look like the answer to our prayers either.
With that in mind, I think we need a change up. The central midfield position has been one of the keys to our success under Wilder. We all remember how good we looked playing with Paul Coutts. We all remember how sh*t we looked in the post-Coutts and pre-Norwood era. It feels like we're back in that period again, except the opposition is miles better and the rest of our team have retreated into their shells. The upshot is defeat after defeat.
For me, the answer is a mix / double-pivot of Norwood and Berge. Norwood is so crucial to us playing good football with the ball on the floor, we need someone beside him to stop us from being overrun. That'll also allow Berge to concentrate on getting forward on the ball.
In front of them, stick Burke on the right hand side to create all sorts of trouble. You could probably play Lundstram there if you wanted to be a bit more compact. But I feel the ball would go wide to Lundstram and then immediately come back into the middle. Burke will happily go with it. Osborn on the left because he'll work hard and his experience of playing LWB with us will mean he won't be afraid to take someone on the outside. Didsy is in the 10 role, either Mousset or Brewster up top.
Essentially the set-up will often work as a 4-1-4-1. Norwood will never get forward and instead sit in front of the defence. Stevens and Baldock should be getting forward to support over-loads.
This is sort of a hybrid what I think we should do and what Wilder could do. I think I'm right in saying Wilder had previously been a fan of the 4-2-3-1. It might be one he looks at again.
