We're struggling for creativity while waiting for Willamson to be fit and Stephen Quinn hasn't made a huge difference either, so how about this experiment:

Simonsen
Calve Morgan Bartley Taylor
Ertl Britton
Ward - - - - - Bogdanovic - - - - - - Yeates
Cresswell

This will mean we have width and a bit of pace on both sides, while maintaining height and strength. As Barnsley fans praised Bogdanovic for his creativity/football brain, it could be worth trying to see if he could do something in such a role, finding space between the opposition midfield and defence, playing in the wide men, and also getting beyond the main striker, which our midfield has struggled with all season.

If Coventry score first and we can't find space or attacking rythm, it'll be easy to go more direct and play 4-4-2.

Any thoughts?

It doesn't matter in what formation you write them down or which number shirts they wear you cannot polish a turd!
Why the hell is Taylor back in the side?
And how many chances is Cresswell going to have?
Sorry Bergan, looks like another nailed on defeat !

Taylor played a blinder in the reserves this week - apparently.

Provided the assists for both goals.

Goals.... remember them?

Why didn't you put this in the Coventry match thread?

If with Fiery, that team doesn't fill me with hope. Taylor and Ertl should never get near a Blades shirt again.

I don't care what formation we play (though I'd prefer 4-4-2 against a crap team at home) but just want to see us attack. Coventry are not very good and we should be beating them. I'll forgive Speed if we lose, as long as we have a good crack at beating them. It's the negativity that I don't want to see.

As the Team are filing out of the dressing Room for the Kick Off, Speedo should be stoking up a Large Brazier with half a dozen Pokers buried in the Coke.

Said Pokers to be inserted into below par players at half time if we aint winning.

If we are winning, Sam Ellis gets the Pokers, as a bonus for the Fans :D

I's love to try that, minus Taylor and probably Calve. I think he's too lightweight if we play with 2 wingers. Width and 2 strikers and let our grafters do their stuff.

Oh, I firmly believe tactical options can give you different outcomes, and in terms of creating chances I think the above line up will give us more than what has been tried, and largely failed, up to now.

Do we have any other options than Taylor at left back? From an attacking perspective (and isn't it time to focus on that?) I'd want a left footer putting in crosses.

I don't have as much time for message boards these days and this (general Blades chat) is mainly the one I have a look at. I chose Taylor as I wanted a left footer supplying crosses from left back, especially as he'll be combining with the right footed Yeates who likes to cut inside anyway. I picked Ertl for his strength and height, with Yeates, Ward and Britton in midfield we need that.

In general I think people are putting too much emphasis on individuals, every one of ours have their critics. It is time to focus on a selection of players that can work as a unit offensively and defensively.

We're playing against a Boothroyd team. It's going to be more about the muck and nettles side of the game this week. I'd genuinely have Kozzy in so there's some semblance of a tackle going in. Up the other end, definately needs to be two up top, and genuinely so, none of this hanging around on the left wing nonsense. Cresswell (who frankly needs a game, so needs this - possibly final - opportunity to produce one) and Bogdanovitch to see if he's prepared to get his bandanna dirty.

Looks like Taylor will have to play and on occassion he can play some nice football down the left wing and can find a man and put a decent ball in. But, I can see it now Cresswell running into the left channell, holding it up, ball played back to Taylor, decent cross and Boggy nowhere to be seen and Ward too deep.

Your team looks as good as it can get at moment Bergen

Two up top is all I'm bothered about to be honest. Cresswell needs dropping. Boggy and Evans for me. Ward and Yeates on the flanks.

4-4-2

Simmo

Calve
Morgan
Bartley
Taylor

Ward
Britton
Ertl
Yeates

Bogdanovic
Evans

4-4-2

Simmo

Nosworthy Bartley Morgan Jordan (Taylor if Jordan aint fit)

Calve Britton Ertl Yeates

Boggy Ward

We're never going to drop Nos given the wages he's consuming so I think the logical step is to move him out to his former position of full back and get him on McSheffery.

A thread about football?! How refreshing.

Has McSheffrey been playing wide left for Cov? Does he still have a bit of pace? I'll gamble that he doesn't and use the right back slot to get a bit of extra height in defending set pieces. If we were worried about his pace down the left, I'd go with Lowton at RB.

I'd go with a 4-4-2

Simonsen
Nosworthy Morgan Bartley Taylor
Yeates Britton Ertl Quinn
Ward Bogdanovich

I think Quinn is more effective on the left side than he is in the middle and I think that line up gives us 4 goal threats.

I think we're a decent bet on Saturday, it must be a while since we were odds against at the Lane against a team like Coventry.

I'm going to echo what Fiery said but in a more conservative manner. Essentially he's right and I am of the opinion that an average group of players cannot be made into a good one by simply changing their roles / shape of the team. What we need is better players in key areas.....however.....to give us a fighting chance of taking anything from the next couple of games I would set my stall out like this:-

Simonsen
Lowton Morgan Bartley Taylor
Ward Britton Montgomery Yeates
Slew Cresswell

I'm not a fan of Andy Taylor whatsoever and feel he is out of his depth at this level but with Stephen Jordan out he's our only natural left sided option in defence. I dont like playing right footers at left back as I think it upsets the balance of the side when in possession.

Ertl serves no purpose in midfield so Monty gets in. Ward and Yeates are the only competent players in wide positions and Slew is worth a shot IMO because no one else is producing the goods on the service we can provide them.

You don't rate Ertl from what you have heard then?

Yeates in front of Taylor is the stuff of nightmares for me.

I see where you're coming from and maybe it would be a good idea to have Yeates right and Ward left as invariably tracks back a bit more.

That said, it's time to start focusing on our (admittedly limited) strengths and have some conviction to attacking the opposition, rather than worrying where we may concede from.

I know it's not going to happen, but one other alternative while Jordan is out would be the 5-3-2. We doing sod all on the flanks anyway:

Simmo

Nos - - - Bartley - - - Morgs

Calve - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Taylor

Britton - - - - Ertl

Yeates

Ward - - - - Boggy

That said, this is all very Football Manager. The 4-4-2 will do me with pace out wide and TWO sodding strikers.

Personally I would like to see Ward in the hole behind boggy

.............Simonsen
Lowton Morgan Bartley Taylor
...........Ertl....Britton
Calve.......Ward.......Yeates
..............Boggy.................

No no no, this can't be right. I agree WORD for WORD with a Torrix post.

Welcome to th sunshine band Houso. You'll be agreeing with me soon :D

Another of your clapping friends has joined the dark side .......

I'm going to echo what Fiery said

You are really getting into your new role in the sunshine band aren't you SC :D

I heard he was ok actually. A Palace season ticket holder told me he was a real battler and did a job (although that was at right back towards the latter end of last season). I have seen with my very eyes that the guy has no plce in a the centre of the park for a Championship side. I never thought we'd find a midfielder that was as liited as Monty, but adds less value to the team, however Kevin Blackwell did just that. He's awful and I'd sooner have Quinn or Monty ahead of him (which is really saying something).

I've seen the light Olle :D

No longer will I be brain-washed by unfounded positivity and spin. Its all about calling it how it is and while we're at it, exaggerating the point so as to bring balance to the spirituality of this forum.

I would like to apply for a full-time position on the board!

For me it'd be 4-4-2, I'd start off something like this..

GK: Wright
LB: Taylor
CB: Morgs
CB: Bartley
RB: Nosworthy
LM: Yeates
CM: Monty
CM: Britton
RM: Lowton
ST: Ward
ST: Evans

Subs:
Simmo
Kozluk
Slew
Cresswell
Ertl
Boggy
Calve

Providing Reid is fit and ready, I'll change my suggestion to:

Simonsen
Calve Morgan Bartley Taylor
Ertl Britton
Ward - - - - - Reid - - - - - Yeates
Cresswell

The most balanced and complementary line up we've had in a long time if you ask me. Reid gives us more options and it will be interesting to see how Speed will use him.

I dont mind your system Bergen just some of the personnel arent doing it for me, particularly Calve, Ertl and Cresswell.

I put some of the blame of their poor performances on unbalanced and negative line ups.

Is there any general weaknesses about the suggested line up?
