Tanganga worst ever captain?

That "running away from the danger" thing yesterday had me questioning his sanity.

It was quite desperate on our part after selling Anel that we let him sign only a 3 year contract. He’ll be in that uncomfortable 1 year to go batch. Ideally someone comes for him in January and we cash in.

Yeah, Bristol City at home. He’d fell out with Collins and Butler so played Alcock and McGahey at centre half and gave Lou Reed his debut at 16.

In fact our midfield that day included Reed, Scougall, Murphy, Ben Davies and Flynn. Makes this current lot look like giants!
 
I do think Wilder is trying to force us to fall in love with this current squad.

We adored that 2016–20 team because it embodied what we expect from Sheffield United. They’d come back from losing positions, they’d turn up with genuine belief they could beat anyone, and there was a mix of arrogance, confidence, fitness and intelligence in everything including our set plays.

Since Hecky’s promotion, all of that has faded. Tanganga isn’t very good, and I think most fans have accepted that now. When you compare him to the old leaders Sharp, Egan, Norwood, Basham there’s just no comparison.

Wilder’s trying to squeeze that same emotional connection out of a squad that simply doesn’t have the same personality, leadership or resilience. And that’s the real issue.
 
I remember saying last season he’s not a good defender or a leader and got shouted down by some on here.

We have missed leadership and positional awareness in defence for ages. The whole team needs someone to organise and motivate on the pitch, a team of leaders would be ideal, I’m not sure we have any.
 
He's not the worst, but he is also not Captain material. Too hot headed and seemingly more interested in getting into a spat with referees every match.

The problem we have is that there are very few players who are captain material now. From the regular starters, personally I would have given it to Peck or Bamford, but I am not sure either of those would be amazing at it either.

One of the first changes Wilder made first time was making Billy Sharp captain which I thought was a great move but we still seemed to need a bit of leadership at the back, and that happened when Jake Wright came into the team.
 
That 2nd goal looked like tanganga had a few quid on him to score, ive never seen defending like that. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
 
Should never have had the armband…

but there are absolutely no leaders in this squad

Tanganga certainly isn't the commanding player that i expected him to be when signed him and he's seemingly picked up where he left off last season. I thought we'd be getting a player dominating the Strikers and being pretty organised, but its come down to his CB partner to play that role, even if technically they're not as good as Tanganga. Boro away aside, where he appeared to be a one man defence, I don't recall Tanganga being the stand out defender. Hopefully alongside Kitching, Tanganga can pick up his performances. Positioning wise he seems to be all over the place, but that might also be a consequence of the players around him not being up to the job either.

The captaincy is where I have the problem though, with him. He appears to want to argue with officials rather than lead his side, often when freekicks have been given against us, he's in the middle of the park arguing with the ref, instead of accepting it and getting back to position to marshall his defenders. He seems more petulant than a leader should be.

Over the years we've been blessed with strong centre half leaders as captains, the likes of Jags, Morgan and Egan all stand out. All different mannerisms and abilities, but they would lead the side. I don't get the same feeling from Tanganga. If we have to have a centre half captain, perhaps it could be Kitching if he can establish himself.

It also seems a little like Tanganga has too much responsibility with the captaincy. He needs to be focused on the defensive duties first.

I'd like to think that Phillips would take the armband in the middle of the park, but he's not there yet, fitness wise to be getting the armband for 30 mins.

Nobody is going to be falling in love with this squad no matter what Wilder says.
 
I believe Kitching was vice captain at Coventry. I think he would be a great shout for the season. But on the downside he's a loan player!

Thought exactly the same no intention of busting his ass to put a challenge in or at least have presence.
 
Not a fan of him as captain. He seems to do a lot of moaning about other players while standing about watching goals go in.

For Balance, I thought Tanganga was excellent last night, i don't think he did much wrong and alongside Kitching, they looked a much more stable pairing.

There are still chaotic Tanganga moments, which i think are just part of his game, but he was much calmer last night, albeit against a side with no real strikers

Peck would've been MoM but for his giving the ball away for their goal, Kitching and Cannon close behind. Cooper was good too, but thought Tanganga stood out after some pretty poor performances recently.

He does need to get some shorts that fit though, its not a game of basketball.
 
Tanganga's debut was possibly the best debut I've ever seen, he was a one man brick wall. I think he pretty quickly worked out he was the only one that could/wanted to defend and lost a bit of oomph. It's hard to do your best work when your colleagues can't be arsed. He's also had to play right back, he's not had a consistent partnership (either with the other CB or RB) and gets little to no help from midfield. Add the captaincy to this and you can see he's got a lot going on!

He needs a big experienced bastard next to him and someone else needs the armband. I'm not convinced by Kitching yet but Wilder signed him so Wilder will play him so hopefully they can develop some sort of understanding this season. The team is crying out for a leader on the pitch and creativity among other things but unfortunately Wilder has other ideas and will probably sign another right back for the space vacated by Zatterstrom.
 
On evidence so far, i dont see kitching amy better tham mcguinnes. In fact his passing is woeful
 
Was at fault for the goal today. The only man he needed to be tight to, and he's running into the goal. I think he needs a week out the team. The armband seems heavy for him, he needs to focus on his game more. He's probably more suited to the central roll as he's not very good on the ball compared to the young lad Baptiste. So moving forward if we are going to go with the overlapping CBs again, Baptiste would be better for it once Seriki is back. I thought the left hand side worked ok with Kitchen pushing forward past Mccallum be interesting to see how it looks when H is back fully fit.

Thought he played well apart from that on the goal. Formation seemed to suit him
 



Not seen all the games due to childcare but out of the three centre halves today I thought he was the weakest by quite a distance tbh.

I thought kitching was very good today and Mcguiness had a decent game. Tanganga totally lost jiminez for the winner and his distribution is absolutely dreadful
