Swansea

Sheffield United and Swansea have played 46 games between each other with the blades coming out on top with 22 victories to Swansea’s 13 wins and 11 draws between the two clubs.

From our first meeting in the FA cup in 1933 (which was a 3-2 win for the blades away from home) we played the swans pretty regularly up until 1964 after that we never played them again until the early Bassett days in the 88/89 season in which we drew 2-2 away from home and won convincingly towards the end of the season on the 6th of May 5-1 at Bramall Lane in the old division 3, Swansea were regulars in the 3rd and 4th tiers between the late 60’s and 2008 spending only 6 season out of the bottom 2 tiers in that time with 2 of them seasons actually being in the top flight while we were ready to take over Darlington,

a few older blades will remember the remaining two games of the 88/89 season after that. Wolves being the game most will remember a few days later.

In between 1964 and 2007 they were the only games between the clubs.

My personal memory of Swansea is losing 4-0 in 2011 which would prove to be our last championship game for 6 years. What did we expect that season with players like Shaun Lowry getting sent off. Who? No I can’t remember him either but apparently he played for us 13 times according to Wikipedia and in this game he got his marching orders.

That's the earliest one I can find in the Carrier Bag Firm archives.

On loan from Aston Villa i think. One of many terrible players in that team.

Isn't his name "Shane" though, like the golfer

3 December 1988. A few of the Carrier Bag Firm completed the 92 grounds watching United that day.

On there last two visits to The Lane they were shocking , both comfortable wins for us , think it’ll be a lot tighter game tmmw with two sides that don’t concede much .
A game that weirdly sticks in my mind was our 1-0 defeat down there in Jan 19 we could and should have won the game but off the back of it we went 11 months unbeaten away from home inc first half of our return to the Prem eventually losing to Man City at Xmas ⚔️

I have a friend from boarding school that supports Swansea and I am meeting him tomorrow night. He now lives in Manchester but works at Warrington. Am hoping he will arrive in Sheffield for 6pm after he finishes work at 4pm. I got to know him in 1973, Blades were in 4th division and Swans were in the 4th. We played in the same 6 a side tournament at Manchester on 2nd May 1981. He was playing for Bridgend Deaf and I was for Sheffield Deaf. At the end of the 6 a side tournament he was celebrating on hearing Swansea got promotion to the 1st division after winning 3-1 at Preston. I had to wait until I bought The Pink Final in Manchester city centre to find out that the Blades had lost to Walsall which meant we got relegation to the 4th division. On meeting my mate again at the Manchester deaf centre he reminded me of which division our were in when we first got to know each other 8 years earlier!

For the first time since the 1960/61 season Blades eventually played a league fixture (despite the FA Cup tie in 1964) against Swansea in December 1988. It was my only time going to a match at Vetch Field and I was stood with the Swansea fans with my mate and his dad. Neither of us attended our 5-1 win in the reverse fixture in May 1989 as I was selected to be captain of my cricket team for the season so I had to play cricket on that day. Then there was another long spell of both teams not playing each other until 2007 when Swansea won 3-0 at the Lane in the FA Cup 3rd round (yes, my mate was sat next to me!). Swansea's new stadium is the only ground I have not been to out of the clubs in the Championship division and I intend to go there in the middle of January!
