Surprised and disappointed

I'm extremely positive about the season, but I've not got blind faith in the talent of one of the poorest players we have. No one should.
Bit harsh on a player who was a regular fixture in a Championship side but it's true it hasn't really worked out for him so far.
Had Brayford been fit I think he'd have been moved on but atm we need him for cover. I expect we'll ship him out in the JTW providing Brayford's fit, unless he gets into the first team and has a blinder, which would be a surprise.

I know he's played in the championship but then again so has Marcus Williams

I really, really hope that you're wrong because Baxter has consistently demonstrated that he is not effective in League 1 games. Having him at CM is a waste of a shirt and I would much prefer either of
Wallace (J), Coutts, or Dimao rather than Baxter.

Apart from injuries and new signings, Adkins has been remarkably consistent in his team selections so far.
It would be very strange indeed if he picked Baxter in all the main pre-season matches then dropped him when the real action starts.
In Baxter's favour, I would say that picking him in Central Midfield behind two wingers and two forwards makes us a much more attacking, exciting prospect than last season.
It should give us a far better chance of breaking down the teams who sit deep against us and soak up the pressure. That's where we really struggled last season.
It looks like the plan is to be a bit less solid and outscore the opposition, which is fine by me.

I'd rather see a bout of genital herpes down below than see Coutts strutting his shit again.

The most complete midfield performance I saw last year ironically came from Baxter away at Preston. An outstanding performance.

While you can argue over many things in detail (and we have) I am a little surprised at the lack of fanfare with the arrival of Sammon and Sharp. In fact some people are bemoaning being overloaded in the striking department!!

We have just signed players who are and have played a significant part of their careers at a higher level. They have dropped down to join us. This suggests quality wise they are in the Brayford envelope. This also suggests to me the club is showing its ambition by signing these players.

Add to that the most significant upgrade in a manager in some time and you would think it was cause for optimism. Appears not, we still need several new players according to our on site team of experts and "we can all see" positions need filling. And whats more they need filling now!

I'm quite happy with the business we are doing, I am happy with the Manager we have. I am happy with the commitment of the board to strengthening the squad. What more to say really?

The arrival of Sammon and Sharp IMO would be good signings even if we had got promoted and now playing in the championship.

We are in preseason , and although they say the games do not set any barometer / benchmark , on how you do when the season gets under way , it certainly did last season.

I think most supporters are more than happy with the signings , but are edging on the side of caution , due to the mindset of being let down again . In other words , we have had the stuffing knocked out of us , so its hard to get excited with any fan fare . Winning at Gillingham , and carrying on winning , will soon change that , and we wont feel as battle weary . Its our senses , that need filling again . Adkins has started the long road to recovery , but its not a short easy fix.

Adkins is Nigel III.

I know he wasn't around for a long time, but it was fun while he was: Nigel (the first) Spackman.

I can't believe I support a club that has had 3 Nigels as manager.... what happened to "Muck and Nettles"?

Ta and I'd completely forgotten about Spackman.

I think the fact that he walked out on us meant that my brain dropped into 'Bladey Blade preservation mode' and eliminated all memory of him.

Don't even think about getting me started on the serial-walker-outer/ everyone's granny/ 'there's only one United'; Steve Bruce.

He he ...... no shooting here mate ! :D

I'm just concerned that Baxter is too lightweight for L1 and he will get bundled off the ball by big agricultural CMs and will not get fouls for it. He's proven that over the last 2 years.

Put him in the Championship or even Premiership and he'll be ok as the refs give fouls there ..... hence his better performances in the Cup for us. Hes also very prone to standing back and admiring a good pass instead of getting on and wanting the ball again higher up the pitch.

No ..... in theory he gives us a more attacking line-up but in practice, in the agricultural battle that is L1, Baxter is like Scougal and that is ineffective. Much rather a fit J.Wallace !!

I agree with you that Coutts was disappointing last season, but he was playing in front of a shit defence, alongside midget midfield players who were ineffective in L1 and behind a crap strikeforce for most of the time.

Hopefully, Coutts and Wallace (J) can deliver the eagerly awaited goods this season, because Baxter ( despite being one of our most technically gifted players ) is ineffective in L1 ...... :(

Having scored 35 goals and got us within an ace of automatic promotion, our star striker gets convicted of rape and gets sent down, we then miss out on auto to the one team you wouldn't want to and then we agonisingly fail again at the final play off hurdle by sudden death penalties.....

But that's ridiculous, that could never happen!

Exactly! That would be as silly as saying our young defender gets a red card and misses three games at the same time as our midfield general gets injured and watches the final from the sidelines on crutches......

No, he's at Walsall with Simon Le Bon and Terry Hall from The Specials.

Davie means the one who played for Cardiff and is now at Wigan.

As much as I liked Terry Hall when he sang for the Specials, I think I preferred him with Lenny the Lion

Really exciting signings, although CS has always failed to impress me. Hopefully this is your year... finally!
