I have to say I’m pretty underwhelmed by the summer gone by.
The defence is not good enough to be a genuine challenger. Last season we were starting with Souttar and this year we’ll be starting with someone not as good as him, so a weaker team. It’s especially frustrating as there are quite a few centre halves out there to try, Darling and Dunne being 2.
We need a central midfielder and a right back desperately in my opinion. Without Souza in midfield we are miles weaker, and even though I think Seriki is a great footballer and has a lot of potential, it’s not doing him any good having absolutely no one to compete with at RB.
I’d be really happy however if we were able to pull off McBurnie arrival and Moore leaving. McBurnie being younger and more agile which can fit the new system, while also being a good championship striker, 5 years younger and actually being £2m up from the whole transactions would make the deal really good for us.
I like the look of Barry, and would like to see Caceres and Ukaki given the opportunity to turn pre season form into something useful.
We absolutely need a centre half, a right back, and a centre mid, and it’s a shame that whoever we get has missed a full pre season with a new style of play being put forward.
I half suspect, though, we will go full Sheffield United and both Cooper and Hamer will be sold last minute.
It gets to me knowing the first things the owners did was show some ambition and bottle and spend £10m on a new striker, and that striker ends up being someone who’s slow and weak and looks like he needs 5 touches to do anything.
