Over the last 20 years though our lowest has been 12.9k in 1995-1996. I don't quite know why it was that bad that year as I didn't follow football back then and I don't understand how we can rake in 18-20k this year despite being a tier lower than we were. 1999-2000 fear that if things don't improve soon we will fall back to those levels in a few years.

Bassetts last 4 months in charge, shit form, a three sided stadium, and though things picked up under Kendall, it was a crap season all told. Though Arsenal got dumped out o t cup by Carl Veart!!!

I do agree with that. Many Weds fans I have encountered over years come from places such as Swinton, Wath and going out to surburbs of Barnsley, Rotherham and Chesterfield. A lot from Grenoside, Chapeltown, High Green, Eccelsefield but many more from further out of Sheffield too. Of course they have fans from the central areas of Sheffield but I would wager that there is a lot more Blades from Sheffield and its immediate surrounding areas. Always surprised me when I worked up near Shirecliffe/Pitsmoor/Firth Park how many Blades came from there when they are in theory close to Hillsborough. I live in S8 and always surprised when I see any Weds apparel as it is a very strong Blades hold. I believe Gleadless, Handsworth, Manor, Woodseats, Heeley, Norton are all quite big Blades strongholds actually.

Surprised by the number of pigs on bus to Lowedges after last Hillsborough clash with us in 2012.

Interesting you say that. I work in Chesterfield some off the time and have quite a few friends there and would say it would be quite close. There are a lot of Weds fans in this area which surprised me. I would certainly not say there are much more in these areas from time I have spent there/people I have spoken to.

I worked in Chesterfield between 1979 and 2001 and, from the top of my head, the number of Wendy fans I worked with was less than a handful. Many Blades, also Man U and Liverpool fans

Yeah great thing about Fulwood (lived in Crimicar Lane) you could see the floodlights of BDTBL. Luckily hills got in the way of seeing Hillsborough!

Being in the Championship means teams like Wolves, Millers, Leeds, Derby, Middlesborough etc. etc. will bring around 4k.

Must admit, the trends in football baffle me. Some of the crowds in the latter stages of the Triple Assault season (2002-3) were much lower than we're getting now.

I remember going to Old Trafford for Bobby Charlton's last game (Easter Monday 1971). United won and the crowd was a then-massive 58,000. On the same day, the pigs were at home to Carlisle and got 8k.

Also remember standing on the kop at home to Arsenal in the First Division (top tier) 1968 and the crowd was 13k.

I have always been fascinated and surprised that we manage to draw support from some very unexpected areas. I mean it isn't like we have enjoyed the kind of success that would attract glory-hunters. Areas like S12, S13, S8, S9, S2 and S14 are a given but, to attract and retain a very loyal following from places like Chesterfield, Mansfield, Retford/North Notts. and Rotherham says a lot about the kind of bond that exists between the Club and its fans. Long may it continue.

I live in Elsecar and I'd say support for the Pigs and Barnsley is about the same. Areas like Hoyland, Jump, Elsecar, Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe, Bolton on Dearne have historically seen huge Wednesday and Barnsley support. Don't know about the former pit villages of Rotherham and Doncaster but I'd be surprised if they weren't all Wednesday areas. In my opinion it goes back to the early to mid 1960s when Wednesday were quite a good team and sons and grandsons have followed the Porcine tradition.

I went to school in Pitsmoor and it took pupils from all over Sheffield, North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire and I'd say there were more Blades than Pigs

In my younger days I worked at the dustbin depot in Eckington and every man there was a Blade. On a cold day I once wore a Chesterfield scarf and I was sent to Coventry because people thought I was a Piggy. Only when I explained was I was forgiven again "Ah, tha alreight then, youth".

Bull's Head at Ranmoor - that's "Fulwood-East" for those not sure - has more Wendies drinking there than it's had for a long time (even excluding the ex-player type local celebs) - after the football team was re-established it brought some new blood to the pub many of which were the other lot.... footy team have moved on now though.

But, it's always been predominantly a Blade pub in an obviously Blade area since I first landed there in '93. Maybe about 60-40....

Brought up mostly in Handsworth before spreading my wings elsewhere. Again a Blade area - massively so in the 70s and 90s.. but at Brook school my year group in the 70s was the only one that had more Wendies than Blades... as a result, all the way through school we got mercilessly kicked around in revenge for any torment the other lot got from the rest of the school.

I've often noticed that when both clubs in the same division, Wednesday's biggest league crowd in a typical season is bigger than ours, but their smallest is often lower than ours... (or it feels like that). At the very least the gap between biggest and smallest is much wider at S6 than it is at S2.


Another possibly interesting comparison...

Since the real media age of football started at the beginning of the 70s, and increased focus on attendances became part of the measure of a clubs relative size in a willy-waving kinda fashion....

come close to winning the league (91/92),
have played in the UEFA Cup (92/93),
have won the league cup (91),
have been league cup runners-up (93),
have been FA Cup runners-up (93).
A record we'd love to have had....


Yet, despite their relative success only United have actually averaged 30,000+ (twice) during that period. Tell that to a Wendy though and they just won't have it.

The first line of your post would seem to be true this season as well, even though they are in a higher division. Their largest league attendance so far this season is bigger than ours, but their smallest attendance was under the 17000 mark. We have yet to go below that figure - although we came close against MK Dons.

To be honest I think both of the clubs have decent support... Yes, SUFC might be the more "inner-city" club for natural reasons but in my view the stadium capacities have done much to give the impression that Weds is the "bigger" club.
That they might very well be as far as I´m concerned. I´m just talking impressions.

It is generally true that Wednesday have always been able to whistle up much bigger crowds than us at almost a moments notice, but as the 7000 indicates they can be deflated very easily..

It was originally just to keep an eye on Harry Bunn.. But so came the takeover and as the resident expert on arab royalty I got involved there. Since then I´ve just been around now and then.
Maine Road is no more alas, it was a shithole to be honest.. But I still feel nostalgic about it

Never been to the Etihad but if it's anything like the other "new" grounds I've been to eg Riverside, Pride Park, there's nothing round them except soulless dual carriageways or mobile snack bars on match days. There's no infrastructure round them. The Etihad may be different I don't know. Your club shop at Maine Road was appalling given the size of Man City but the area had a "lived in " feel if you know what I mean. Visiting the Lane must be great for those who like traditional grounds.
