Look at recent history and whenever SUFC have dared to put their hands in their pockets we have (even with average managers) done well. With the exception of Robson who was a terrible manager, look at Blackwell, Wilson, Spackman and Warnock when the money was pumped in we performed far better.

Warnock got us promoted when McCabe gave him a little money and allowed him players like Ifill. Probably our biggest achievement in the past 20 years.

Blackwell inherited a team of very good players and hence for a season or so we looked the dogs bollocks getting within a whisker of promotion. As soon as McCabe pulled the rug it slid backwards to where we were when Wilson took over.

Wilsons first season we had a good team and we played good football. It wasn't extravagant but when he was supported we once more got within a whisker of promotion and certainly one of the highest points hauls in recent history. Second season McCabe pulled the plug and hey presto backwards we went.

So we get to where we are today with Clough. A capable if unspectacular manager who most of us would say is doing a good job albeit with limited resources. Our patchwork team is going to be within touching distance of the play off spots if not automatic promotion come January. If we want out of this shithole division and we have faith in the man managing the team, shouldn't we put this game changing money into this team with a view to promotion?

Fact is, if we don't then we won't get promoted and we will be binning off another manager at the end of the season. Then where do we go? Law of diminishing returns tells you it won't be a better manager. Another untried and untested newbie? Not after what happened with Weir. So you go into the realms of journeymen in the hope we can attract someone who will work with no funding and work miracles.

For me, it doesn't have to be tens of millions but enough to get 3-4 quality players into the club. Not £200k bids but actually paying market rate and taking a chance. Because if we don't we will still be in the third division this season, next season and beyond.

Now is an opportunity to change our position. Its a chance for McCabe to put a more positive legacy in place but more importantly its an opportunity for us to go forwards as a collective rather than backwards and squabbling in a heap.

We need to spend in the JTW without a doubt as it is easier to spend in league one than in the Championship due to the FFP rules, this get up and then spend is the biggest load of bullshit ever which along with the sale of Maguire which we didn't need to do allegedly makes me think after all the spin the game changing investment is just not there.

Ok, here's what I think happened last season, we, in fear of going down managed to spend heavily on loans in january, brayford being the stand out player brought in, this was to keep us in the division not to get into the playoffs which we almost did, we overachieved...

Hopefully the same will happen this january and a few quality players will come in, idoubt we will have an unbeaten run like did last year but I can't say it won't happen 100%..

As I see things, we look to have created a squad with enough players to compete this season in the top half of the table, and because we paid pretty much bugger all on transfer fees we have not spent any of the cup, or harry money, its my belief that the club will go large again in the jan window and loan quality to get us up, short term high expenditure on class players to push us over the line and make the top two, if we fail the club will not have compromised itself because the expensive loanees can go back to the parent clubs, so we won't be burdened after staying down in league 1, this strategy will hopefully be applied again and should we be sucessful then we sign the best of the loanees and build on it for a season of consolidation in the championship.

Hopefully this is the strategy that our club employ...

Be optimistic, but please don't ask me to explain why we leave strikers on the bench and play nobody up front at home, wonder what wilson thought when he knew we wern't playing a forward from the off, bet he pissed himself....

.

Warnock was given a much bigger transfer budget in 2005/06 than he did in the previous seasons. We signed Ifill, Short, Gillespie, Unsworth, Shipperley, Akinbiyi and Dyer

Warnock blamed the budget for his failings.
And the mug that Judas is he fell for it.
The £5 million that Judas gave Warnock at the start of his take over of the club and its ultimate destruction by the total extraction of all its assets was completely wasted on garbage like Unsworth, Flitcroft, Horsfield and Akinbadbuy that made the team worse! and had to be left out. (Add Pericard for 1.5 mill who had fortunately failed on loan and you get the full picture!)
Key players that year were free (Monty Jags Tonge Bromby Quinny) or cheap (Paddy, Shipperley, Kabba etc).
THAT HAS BEEN THE SAME IN MY 50+ YEARS OF SUPPORTING!
ALWAYS!
Iffill had had it by then (if he ever had it) as was illustrated the year before when Jags had him in his pocket!
Whenever our bad mangers have been given decent money they have wasted it. That's nearly 40 years since Gentleman John not 10!
Good managers are successful. Bad managers fail despite the money.
Proof for those who know FA about United or anything football?
Who won La Liga(?) last year?
The 2 biggest spenders in the world till Manure panicked this year - or little Athletico with a budget less than division 2 QPR!

Whenever our bad mangers have been given decent money they have wasted it.!

The irony here is that whilst the worst manager in my memory, Robson spent and got good players in but didn't have a bloody clue what to do with them.

Combined with the left overs of Warnocks side we should have been top 2 in the Championship. Even Blackwell took that team close to the play offs with Robsons assemblage.

I don't get this comment either : "those who know FA about United or anything football?" What point were you trying to make. Oh your Athletico thing was the exception. Every rule has one.

He also brought in David Carney!!!!

How many times, bladesway, we HAVE spent money... Free transfers aren't 'free' you know? In fact, when you tot up: wages, signing on fees and agents fees we've basically spent the same as Man U.....

Oh Ok.

Bladesway. I
do not agree that we were the dogs bollocks for a year under Blackwell.
Turgid football, and I get the point you're making about
spending , but under Blackwell it was dogs dinner rather than dogs bollocks.

The realistic targets that we missed out on.

Chris O'Grady
Kieron Agard
Sam Winnall
Mason Bennett

Next one we will miss out on I reckon will be Tom Pope.

Ive been saying this all season , we have the resources and finances tobuy our way out of this division im a bit concerned we dont have the know how to spend it

Dont agree. After he had the rug pulled it was bad but I remember days like Charlton away where we pulled them to bits.

Excellent post Bladesway
Surely the club can find a striker who knows where the net is.
Without the striker we will fail to get out of this division.
It might help if Clough played the strikers he has, particularly at home.
If the club signed another would Clough change the formation.
We have enough in the team to succeed but not without strikers.
What I find so puzzling is that Clough was striker of quality.
Come on Clough get this sorted out otherwise we will remain in this division.
Can one imagine John Harris, Dave Bassett or Neil Warnock playing at home without an out and out striker.

Good Post Bladesway . Thank the lord we do have a thick skinned , stubborn ,consistent honest manager , with class that we have not had since Mr John Harris .He is doing a good job on limited resources and will have players running through a brick wall for him , without the moans , hype and razzamatazz , we had with previous managers .The character will come out in the players with Cloughs winning ( yes winning ) mentality . We have to back his judgement in all things football . Let us hope that Mr McCabe and Mr Prince do the same. It is not the money you are given , it is how you spend it . To date Mr Clough has done well . He may not shop at Waitrose but Aldi , were you get good value for money . I do not want short term spectacular , i want dour , boring football that gets 3 points . Have you come away from a match unhappy after winning . No neither have i. That will get us out of shit league 1 ,steady unspectacular football , under steady guidance of Mr Clough. Let us all be careful of what we wish for , there is always the ginger Mourinho from Sheffield , waiting in the wings , with other has beens , and great pretenders. Commandant Mr Clough , right place , right time , right progression = promotion.

For all the clappers who think it will all come good and we will get automatic promotion. I will offer to the 1st taker a £200 even money bet that the Blades do not gain automatic prmotion this year. Plus it's a bet I sincerely hope I lose.

If I could afford to lose it, I'd cover that bet.

As we stand, with a developing defence, a lukewarm midfield and fuck all up top, we won't make the auto spots. We may make sixth or even fifth, but the utter thought of taking on banana skin teams we should beat makes my shit turn to liquid.

I think where we are now is where we will finish in May, another season where we finish in a lower position to the previous one why break the habit of the last seven years.

Fair play to you. Is anyone willing to act as purseholder out there to payout the £400 to the winner to ensure there is no back-sliding by either party?

ghandi , tell you what . Shall the winner of the bet chuck the money into a agreed charity . At the end of the day we both want the same thing . Promotion. You are a gent .

The loser of the bet gives the money to charity surely? (the winners charity of choice of course).

Very pertinent example this. The first time we had spent a decent amount of money for a while and we actually achieved something. Now is a good time to dig deep because much like that season we now have a solid base to our squad and simply need a sprinkling of quality to kick on.

We spent money when we came down from the PL but the managerial appointments were wrong and we were moving backwards as a club. We're in a good place at the moment so should do it now!

I don't mind the post mate but i can categorically say we did not overachieve last season,no way.At the start of the season promotion was the only thing in our minds and for reasons known we got nowhere near it.

Haha yes, you've missed a huge tongue in a huge cheek, Blackheath! This was the argument we had toed out repeatedly pre-season when we questioned the level of investment in the team. Clearly my post was not sarcastic enough!

Apologies sir, too many hours at work, too many years supporting the Blades.
