Jordan Pickford: Everton goalkeeper's 'erratic' form a dilemma for England

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's "erratic" club form gives England boss Gareth Southgate a "dilemma", says ex-Blackburn striker Chris Sutton.

There's an excellent case being built for Bash, JOC, Hendo, Baldock and Lundstram to be involved come the Euros but I'd bet my house if I owned one on just Hendo getting in, and that'll only be because Heaton is crocked.

Southgate is absolutely spineless and is trapped in a timebubble, it's not 2017 anymore. Look at the league now.

He's picked Mings who's in the second worst defence in the league and is a bad footballer, not an abysmal defender for just removing the ball from an area (as long as you don't mind conceding a load of corners for no reason), but play football at him and he will either concede a foul or you'll bypass him but he won't pick Burnley defenders who, admittedly haven't had a great season but they're proven decent over many years.

Grealish can't get a look in, yeah he's a diving twat but he's also very good, certainly a better option than Declan Rice and fits better with the likes of Sterling, Sancho etc

He'll take Kane and Rashford even though they'll have played bugger all football, he'll leave DCL at home because he doesn't have the experience, he'll play a formation that doesn't suit the handful of world class players England have, like TAA.

He's awful, his selections are awful. He can keep the job though because I don't want the FA after Wilder haha

Bash would be in if he played for Man U or something. One of the best in the league.
 
We saw Southgate's lad playing cricket at Tickhill today. If he was in our changing room, he would be getting told about our players every week. 'Tell your dad etc, etc'

There are 5 English CBs sitting at home that are better than every single one of those in that squad. Embarrassing.

Southgate refuses to call up JOC and Coady because they don't play in a back 4. It's a joke. We'll never win with the defence he picks so why not change your system to accommodate far and away the 2 best English CBs out there right now?

Also not calling up Grealish (or Maddison? Injured maybe?) but calling up the likes of Dier, Winks and Mount. Can't believe it.
 
If Jack has any sense he'll start looking for how far back his Irish heritage goes and fuck England off. He's never going to get a look in while ever he's not playing for a "fashionable" club.

Taking into account bias but Bertrand has had a very good year for Saints, but he would rather pick no left back over a very good (at least) one!!
 
JOC, Dunk, Coady, Tarkowski and Gomez should all be in the side above most of those defenders.

I'd be outraged, but I'm not surprised.

Phillips has basically been picked to stop him declaring for Jamaica. Bit of a cunts trick unless he's planning on building the midfield around him as he could be playing regularly for Jamaica with the outside possibility of playing in a World Cup or he could be a 3 or 4 cap wonder for England in a few meaningless qualifiers.
 
Still takes Harry despite what is happening 🙄 I loved Southgate when he said "performances will earn you a place" and yet here he is like every England manager before him, picking the same players via their popularity 🙄 Bash maybe too old but still a million times better than Mings, as is JOC.

I rate Phillips highly and it wouldn't be a bad shout to build around him for the next few tournaments, however that will never happen because the England set up is a joke and we'll just play Harry Winks who has literally never done anything of note in his fucking career and never will

Yeah I get that, but you have to wonder where his head will be at with all this happening, it makes sense to let him sort himself out whilst we try other options. But Southgate doesn't want to try other options, he still picked fucking Mings for fuck sake 🙄 reputation before ability as always

What reputation has mings actually got? Half a decent season in the championship and then being given the runaround for a season in the prem? His price tag is the only thing that gets him near that squad

Whilst I'm having a rant.....

What is this obsession all of a sudden with "ball-playing defenders"? Call me old fashioned but the number 1 attribute that a defender should have is the ability to defend the goal. Out of that squad today there is probably only maguire who's best attribute is defending. The rest are either attack minded full backs or "ball-playing defenders". Now being able to pass a ball 5 yards out of defence to a midfielder is not classed as a ball player in my book but that's why the likes of dier, mings and keane are allegedly picked for.

And just to debunk the myth even further.

Accurate passes in 2019/20 season

JOC - 1145 (58th in the league)

Mings - 1081 (68th)
