Obvs, confusion reigns on the Official Site. But the next U23 game is on SUNDAY 13 February at 7pm at home, which in this case means Chesterfield FC. Anyone looking to do the Double Header, SUFC Women are kicking off at 1pm at Chesterfield on the same day. The U23 game is our final game in the Group Stage of the Premier League Cup. We're in with The Posh & two Cat 1 Academies - Burnley & Everton. There's still a bit left in the shakedown. But what we do know is - lose and we're out.

Indeed, the shakedown has shook. Following the Burnley result, a win on Sunday will put the Blades in the hat for the last 16. (Be some ground ticks in that lot...)

Bump. Bump. Bumpety Bump. Forget Huddersfield. Move on mate. U23s at Chesterfield tonight. 7pm. Pubs be open soon...

As someone who tries to Bang The Drum for going along, turning up, and supporting our U23s & Academy teams, I'm giving a Big Fucking Hat Tip to each and every one of the 8,656 Leeds Fans who turned out for Leeds U23s last week. Proper Club...

Some remarkable drama in the Premier League Cup today. For Bournemouth to progress, West Brom had to beat Arsenal by four clear goals. That has finished 4-1 to West Brom.

Some remarkable drama in the Premier League Cup today. QPR had to beat Blackburn by three or more goals to progress & knock Blackburn out. It was only 4-2 to QPR going into the 89th minute. Then QPR scored & they were through 5-2. On 90+4 Blackburn clawed it back to 5-3 & they were through. Then on 90+5 QPR made it 6-3, it finished & they were through.

Free tickets for season holders and members. My mate who works at Bellend Rd reckoned there were 6k+ freebies given away and then most of the sales were kids at £3. Not sure how accurate he is but that's what he's said!

Still a good showing, but a little perspective and all that.

(I just don't like people saying nice things about L**ds)

Whaaaaat. SUFC U23s is also free for Season Ticket Holders & would be £3 for any kids who wanted to pay on the night. What perspective are you on about? With EXACTLY the same prices as (for eg) us, they pull in north of 8k. Their U23 prospects must feel it's great to play in front of crowds like that. While lots of other U23 teams play in front of a few dozen.

Wow! I didn't realise that about our prices, I was just going off what I'd been told about their turnout by my mate. I guess their games being at their ground in their city helps but still, it is a good turnout.

I wasn't criticising your post or disagreeing by the way Phil, I'm just reluctant to hear anything nice said about the dirties!

Is there any reason why you think their turnouts are so much higher than ours for academy games? Could it be due to the higher youth division maybe?

Going to Chesterfield is a little different than a stroll down to BDBL
And, of course, SUFC U23s play the same number of games at Bramall Lane as Leeds United U23s play at Elland Road.

Genuinely, why are posters pushing back on this? Leeds pulled in 8k+ fans - free, paying, don't matter - for an U23 game. Remarkable support.

Let's bust some myths. ALL Academy U23 teams play at a mixture of - their own training/academy ground, local non-league ground, their main stadium - that's written into the rules of the competition. In our case, this season, that's Shirecliffe, Chesterfield & Bramall Lane. For those at the back - we play some U23 games at Bramall Lane, Leeds play some U23 games at Elland Road.

Leeds used to take their U23 team round a variety of West Yorkshire non league grounds in the same season, heavily promote that in a - we're Leeds, we're coming to you - way. And draw thousands in. And have a mobile truck selling merchandise & tickets for first team games.

Simply, their success in attracting 8k+ the other night is - Fan Engagement. Encouraging people to come along and have a great time. Meanwhile, as my OP explains, SUFC had the wrong day/date for our most recent U23 fixture on their official website up to the day before.

Here, Nick Cox, head of Manchester United's Academy, and formerly head at Shirecliffe explains how important it is for Academy players to play in front of proper crowds for their development. Including

"you're not just watching a game, you're being actively part of the development of these players"

We, as fans, have a part in this.

You are a big England fan and you are a big SUFC Academy fan, I respect that but I dont understand your anger with Blades fans for not matching the attendance at a Leeds u23s match and calling them a proper club blah blah when you claim that you are not even a Sheffield United fan as you stated below?

During this period of reflection, I have confirmed I'm not a Football Fan (tbh, never thought I was). I'm increasingly coming to terms with the fact I'm not even a Sheffield United Fan...

I was not expressing anger with Blades fans. I was expressing admiration of Leeds fans. And, I'm happy to stand behind the view that Leeds are a proper club. And, I'm happy to stand behind the view that Sheffield United are a proper club. Superb searching btw....

praise of another club interpreted as hatred of your own.... jeez ... is this where we are?

Fuck Sake. This thread. It's a thread about U23 Academy games. I happened to come across a tweet from last week explaining Leeds got more than 8k at an U23 game, and I posted it with positive comments. Now, Forensic Frank & Googling Geoff are all over it. And I'm about to be called out as a Pig in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Brill, really interesting to know a bit more about it from someone who knows more about it than I, thanks Phil.

Despite my dislike for Leeds as a city, a club and a fanbase...that is impressive to be fair to them. I wonder if it's anything to do with them being a one club city, so all the outlying towns and villages lean towards the city club.

It is a shame that the same level of attention isn't being applied to it on our end really, fixture/date cockups is pretty shoddy. I'd imagine that it'd be possible to drill up some real support for our U23's too, given our already high levels of engagement on social media channels!

Leeds have historically managed to place themselves as THE West Yorkshire team and even THE team to support if you're from North Yorkshire. That's going to be partly down to the fact that they have won trophies. That's going to be partly down to geography. My Blades Mate is from West Yorkshire, he puts it partly down to Leeds itself being a Rugby League town, not a Football town. And, as you say, a one club city puts a different dynamic on it.

Diaspora, geography, historical context all play a part in what sort of club & fanbase you have at any one time. What you have to do, every single day, is engage with what you've got, build & encourage. Leeds do that. (And for those looking for aggro, that does NOT say Sheffield United DON'T do that).

Of course, this thing about U23 attendances is a side show really. It just happened to come across my Social Media. It's not important in any grand scheme. But, I thought it was indicative & illustrative of great Fan Engagement.

(I don't think ANY other Club have been anywhere near as successful as Leeds have in attracting U23 crowds)

And LudlamBlade you are right (imo) to praise SUFC and their approach to Social Media engagement. People would have never really heard of Hassan Ayari or Zak Brunt or Fernando Macedo without the simple, but effective work of our Social Media Teams.

Yeah they definitely "own that territory" for sure. I lived in Leeds for 6 years and I found it very rare that a local would support anyone other than Leeds. Whereas Sheffielders obviously have United or that other lot, and often find a lot of fans of the big 6 etc, but in Leeds it seemed to me that everyone was just Leeds. I guess trophies do have a lot to do with it, they've got that huge history haven't they.

Hopefully the club can put our decent academy side and good social media engagement together and start to get some sort of similar momentum rolling on our end!

They're absolutely smashing it and they have been for ages, Eoin and Tez and the team have really changed the whole way the club interacts with the fans. Someone shared something on here contrasting our marketing from 2014 to now and it's insane how much it's come on.

Has both sides to it though doesn't it, as you often say yourself, all that youtube culture and extra videos has people (myself included!) screaming for all these kids to be rushed in to the first team!
