I liked Tonge, but his downfall was that he wasn't nearly versatile enough. In the right place (left mid) in the right formation (442), playing the right kind of football (attacking with momentum), he looked a class apart. Anything else, though, and he could quite easily disappear and lose influence.

For those who think he lived in Brown's shadow, you must have missed the home game against Fulham in 2006/7 when Tonge played Brown off the park.
