Part of the Ched thread elsewhere got me thinking, how many players have gone out on a reasonably long term loan (i.e. not a month) from us and gone on to have successful careers with the Blades ? I'm not including Kyle Walker for example who has gone on to better things elsewhere.

Seems as though a long term loan is now pretty much the kiss of death.

Matt Lowton is a reasonably recent one I can think of (and senility is always an issue :)) but I'm really struggling.........

Freeman has had a loan spell away hasn’t he? Can’t remember how long for. He’s done alright for us

Very few, and I'd say the same in reverse. We've had very few players in on loan that have done anything; either for us or in their careers. Out of the 100 or so loanees we've ever had in my life time, the exceptions are Glyn Hodges, Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Conor Coady (who'll be capped by England before season's end), Jon Harley and Matt Phillips.

Going back to Matt Phillips, we had a player called Billy Clarke at the same time who I thought was going to go on to bigger and better things but it never kicked off for the bloke, not sure why because I thought he had a touch of quality about him.

He wasn't the tallest if I remember correctly?

He got injured and the last I heard he played against us for Crawley. Clever footballer from memory. Also worth noting he would be a good candidate for the “baby shark” song (glad I’ve got you singing it in your head).

I had the same feeling about Jon O'Connor from Everton. He was meant to be the dog's b@llocks, in the event, he was just b@llocks. :)

We signed him permanently in a swap deal, think it was either Tiler or Hutchison, and don’t think he ever made an appearance for us

Possibly, I thought he came on loan initially, and then was a make weight in one of the Tiler/Ward/Hutchison transfers. If I remember correctly, he was meant to be the next big thing, a regular at England u8, u9, u10, u11, u12, etc. :)

O’Connor was signed for reasons other than football. One of our Directors at the time had a thing about him, an obsession if you like, let’s call it that. It’s quite sick tbh, and I won’t go into all the details. But O’Connor was tricked into visiting the vaults below John Street one dark winter’s evening. The Director was waiting in ambush for him. The lights went out and O’Connor felt a hand with a chloroform rag in it, clasp over his mouth. He tried to struggle free but the chloroform soon overpowered him. What happened next is not for me to say...

Henderson to be added to that list? Blackman was brilliant too.

I deliberately didn't reference DH, as I don't want to jinx him. In retrospect, was Blackman all that good? Better than Moore? I know I may have posted positive posts about him in the past, but he's dead to me now. ;)

Haha, I know he’s easily forgotten but yes, I think he was great for us last season. I was fearing the worst when we didn’t re-sign him actually, but who knew what my man had up his sleeve instead!

This kid turned out ok.

2015– Sheffield United 135 appearences (71 goals)

The above stat includes sub appearences, quite remarkable. And he's not done yet.

It took time and a lot of frustration for him and the fans during his early spells with the club but he goes down in the hall of fame as a true Blades legend.

Calvert got him self a nice Bird and Jud Long will be well paid , maybe on more than the Blades top earner , knowing how daft Adkins is at throwing away a Clubs money .

A mate of mine is a Crawley supporter and said BC was good when he fancied it but had too many 'couldn't be arsed' games.

Didn't Kyle Walker go out on loan to Northampton. Brooks went out on loan to Halifax as well. They both turned out alright

Kyle Bartley went on to play in the Premier, whIch I would suggest is a measure of success.

Taking it the other way round, the biggest failures who had stellar careers before being loaned to us, both have very large noses.
Ian 'useless bastard' Rush and Phil 'I'm not going to get injured' Thompson, were big stars who were pathetic at the Lane.
