Well there you go , you proved me right don’t sell our academy players in the first place for other clubs to benefit from them which was my initial point .

So we sell our best players, as we have for as long as I can remember, just so we can stay where we are ?
Even though unfortunately that policy has meant we have spent about as much time in the third division as we have in the top one and more years in the 2nd. division than I care to remember....
But if everyone's satisfied with being one of the lower league feeder club then I suppose that's it,

But some how I doubt HRH will be..... ;)

Clubs without massive ownership investment have to generate the income needed to progress themselves. There’s two ways to do that recruit exceptionally then sell high and reinvest like a Leicester or a Brentford or you can produce exceptionally sell and then reinvest like a Southampton. During recent times united have been excellent at producing and shocking at anything else.

If we use Southampton as a template and I think we should then you sell an ox, shaw, chambers for great money but keep a Stephens, Ward-prowse and lallana (until later). Using the money raised from sales to recruit for positions you don’t have coming through the ranks. Up until very recently united have produced some excellent players and then done everything we could to sabotage that from throwing in walker as an extra in the naughton deal to being so incompetent in league one that Harry had to try to leave in the end.

We’ll never be able to keep hold of the exceptional ones long term unless we get taken over by a country but with good forward planning, investment and squad building we should be able to get top value for them and build a squad around the good ones. Hopefully cementing ourselves at the top table in the process.
 
Given we've just sent a couple of our academy players out on loan to the National League for a bit of mans football. It got me thinking about how often fans clamour to "chuck the kids in" and the implication that academy players don't get enough of a look in to the first team.

How many players have United let slip through the net? By which I mean allowing players to leave without really giving them a chance and those players going on to prove United wrong.

I'm not counting the likes of DCL and Brooks who you could argue were sold too soon, but were sold because we needed the cash. I'm talking about rejected and then made a really good career, becasue I don't think there are many at all in the last 20 years.

Billy Sharp is a possible example - but even he was sold to Scunny as we headed to the Premier league, so it was as much about him needing to play football as it was about United not rating him. It seems for the most part our managers / coaches have been pretty good judges, unless I've missed some gems we let slip through the net

He's the only one I could think of. Generally the ones we let go and do well (Walker, Maguire, DCL ect.), we have got a decent fee. The ones we let go for pretty much nothing tend to stay in the lower leagues (Reed, Khan, Dimaio ect).

Then there is the Melis and Slew's where we get a decent fee and they do sweet FA.

Potentially Ben Whiteman could be a 'dropped a bollock' if he keeps performing for Preston and moves on to the PL.

Whiteman maybe although you could argue united have learned from this with the rumoured buy back inserted in smiths deal. Wasn’t there a lad who went on to have a pretty impressive career abroad?
 
It’s easy to sit in judgement of the clubs use of academy talent with the benefit of hindsight, but it’s not always that simple.

Of the players we’ve sold at a young age, I’d say only Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire we’re obviously heading for the very top and we didn’t see as much of Walker in a Blades shirt as we should have.

But if players take two or three seasons to develop to their full potential and we want to see them in the first team, then we need a tolerant and patient fan base.

Frankly, if you weren’t quite the finished article, you’d need to be deaf, have balls the size of water melons and the hide of a Rhinoceros to try and learn your trade in our starting 11. 😉

Martin Donnelly a youth player during Warnock era has done well in NI, I can only think of him and NT who went to Australia but his career was short.

Nah it’s not him I’m thinking of the lad I’m thinking of has played top European football.
