Style of football

What would everyone prefer.

1. A Stoke City style of play that would achieve and deliver results that are greater than the sum parts of the team, get us 6 years and counting of top flight football, a cup final and a sortie in to European Football.

2. Trying to play the ball on the deck, and play an 'attractive' brand of football but one that achieves limited results and means that we spend the next few years in League 1

indeed. I cant take this poll seriously.

I vote for attractive football with winning results. but really winning results is what matters to me
 
Poor question. It's basically asking whether we'd like to see us succeed or fail.

A mixture of good passing football and a direct style at times, with us established in the Championship within a few seasons would be fine with me.
 
There are two styles of football - winning football and losing football.

I've seen us do both styles hoofing it and both styles passing it. Now, what was the question?
 
Passing football really but being able to adapt against the teams the do like to hoof it still helps. Although the whole hoof to win football doesn't work anymore hence why more and more clubs are changing the way they play.

Says it all, the experiment of trying to fanny about playing pretty football has failed.

Hardly worded in favour of option 2 though.

If you had said Direct Football or Passing Football I think most would have opted for the latter.

All irrelevant if we are extending players contracts when they are crap
 
Passing football doesn't work at this level. We have completely proved that this season.

What is required is a big hard target man, playing in front of two smaller quicker players who can do something with the second ball and run the channels.

Dont know how long you have watched the Blades. The last time we played attractive football with winning results was under John Harris. Since then it was like this

Furphy- Less risks and flair than Harris style. Despite the high finish in 1975, his "third division" buys didnt really entertain the crowd.

Sirrel- tried to nuture youth players (some went on to become good players) and the team tried to play football. Had "problems" in dealing with senior players.

Haslam - Did have some good players and his "South American" ideas didnt work. Tried to entertain but his teams were a mixture of good and bad players

Peters- just like Bobby Charlton did at Preston

Porterfield- Attacking football and entertained. It worked in the lower divisions under a generous chairman. Had a "Dad's Army" team in 1985-86 and the attendances went down

Billy McEwan- Tried to play football, introducing players from the youth team but had little success.

Dave Bassett- Convinced his players to play the direct style during Summer 1988 and showing them videos of Watford and Liverpool matches. Successive promotions and a 4 year stay in the top division. Lost respect from his players during 1995-96 and McDonald didnt want him

Howard Kendall- Lovely football for the rest of 1995-96 season but with expensive signings. Made more expensive signings in 1996-97 but season was a mixture of good and bad football. Lost in play-offs

Spackman- Patient passing style with 352 formation but we didnt have same success after beginning of December

Thompson- Sunday league manager

Bruce- Not really entertaining style

Heath- passing style on a low budget didnt bring results

Warnock- His style wasnt as direct as Bassett (quite entertaining in 2002-03 with McCall and Brown in the middle) but liked big men up front (Chief, D'Jaffo). took him more than 6 years to get promotion. Poor signings in Jan 2007 and bad decisions towards end of the season got us relegation

Robson- Liked to play narrow and bored the fans stiff and poor results wise

Blackwell - Did well after taking over Robson- Played under quick tempo style. Lost in Play-offs

Speed- Nice guy but his style of play was a mixture of Spackman and Robson but didnt have much success

Wilson- Unlucky in first season. Lacked cutting edge in his 2nd especially at home

Silent wahat happened with Bassett and loss of respect with the players 1995-6?

eh? so every team who's ever got promoted from league 1 hasn't used passing football?

i'm pretty sure that's Charlton and Hudders used passing footie last yr, ditto teams like Southampton, Norwich in recent yrs. Were Donny and Bournemouth long ball merchants this season? Yeovil beat us playing passing football didn't they? Brentford pass it as well don't they? I could go on.......

passing football can work at any level, we got 90 points doing it last season and would have walked the league this season with the same total.

Yes, it can, but the problem is that we are a big club in this division with big crowds and big epectations. Teams come to the Lane and play tight hoping to unsettle the Blades fans. It is easier for smaller clubs with crowds not as big as us to play passing football at home because teams come to their ground playing for a win. It can be a psychological thing
