Stupidest thing you've ever seen on a football pitch

I remember Leon scoring an equalising goal for the pigs in a match they needed to win to stay up, then booted the advertising board in celebration and ended up breaking his toe and had to come off. That was pretty fucking stupid.

Thankfully we got sensible Leon.

In a similar vein, starting the shell of Enda Stevens over Norrington-Davies in the home leg against Forest.

I think it possibly exists in gif form somewhere but I also still think about the time Baldock took a throwin directly into Osborn's face, watched it bounce out for a goal kick and then had a go at Osborn for it. Possibly Bournemouth at home where MGW got booted up the arse and didn't get a pen.

I actually made that gif when it happened!

Just dug it out from my gallery.

Very "classic United".

Viva Starman 💪🏻🌟

That Kieran Wallace free kick v Crewe or Fleetwood!! There used to be a pitch side video of it floating around!

When hoever put the ball out for a corner from the opposition half last season...that was one of the most inept things I've seen on a football pitch.

Late 1970's 2nd division home v Millwall. Millwall playing well and deservedly leading 2-1. Ball played back to the keeper who picks it up. Woody trots up to keeper and stands in front of him. Defender Dave Donaldson inexplicably walks up to Woody and kicks him. Ref gives a penalty which is scored. Game momentum changes completely to us and we go on to win 5-2.

Pemberton trying to do the summersault throw in against Spammers. Ian Bishop then taking piss and Pembo then tackling him waste high.
I was about to post about that. 🙂

Pembo had decided to do his party trick but halfway through remembered who he was and lost confidence and bottled it. Dropped it at the Hammer's feet and with crowd laughing at him and embarrassment factor at max clattered his oppo. 🤣

I seem also to remember Wally Downes getting sent off at BDTBL for a deliberate elbowing that could be seen from space.

Not including bad misses or mistakes where there was a genuine attempt made (I'm looking at you Connor Sammon v Blackpool) but when something was so unbelievably stupid you couldn't understand how or why it happened.

Mine was when Luke Thomas lost an uncontested drop ball that led to Bournemouth scoring.

Also honourable shout outs to these classics:

Do you have a video of the Thomas drop ball? I have no memory of it.

I do remember Wes F getting tackled outside his box

The phantom goal against Villa without which they'd never be where they are now, nor had won a trophy in Europe without it as they'd have been relegated. It reminds me of the '11' scene from Spinal Tap.

Player - "The ball crossed the line. It's a goal."
Ref - "But my watch didn't go off to indicate a goal."
Player - " But it was a metre over the line. What did the linesman say?"
Ref - "I don't need to speak to the linesman because my watch didn't go off. It's not a goal."
Player - "But your watch failed. It crossed the line. Are VAR going to review it."
Ref - "This watch goes to 11!"

It still baffles me to this day that VAR didn't intervene in the most clear and obvious error, but they could spot Lundstram's toe one inch offside after 10 minutes of review because in the moment that was such an obvious error to everyone in the ground. Absolutely mind boggling.

RNDs og last night has to be up there with the comic OGs along with Andy Barnsley v Bradford in March 87 (speculative cross in the 1st minute with no Bradford player anywhere near the ball; Barnsley rises magnificently to put a bullet header in the top corner) and Stan v Preston in Apr 89 (a nothing low cross into the box, again no opposition player anywhere near; Stan decides to do a knee height diving header which sees the ball trickle into the corner,).

Im told Jeff King at Reading in Feb 83 was even better (apparently a ball bobbing aimlessly around in the box and King arriving at speed to hammer it into the net), but I didn't see it.

At the time i think the rules said that VAR couldn't intervene which is so fucking stupid.

Rhian Brewster vs Luton at their place under Slav. Think he got to the byline, quite close to the goal, and absolutely belted the ball across the goal, over everyone and out of play towards the halfway line on the other side of the pitch.

Seem to remember Travelling Blade had some incredible footage of the fans' reaction in the ground at the time - phenomenal viewing

Is it the goalkeeper wearing the same colour kit as the outfield players, as is currently happening at Fleetwood??

Bert was about to write exactly the same thing.
Bert in all his years watching football has never seen this happen.

Wilder out.
Likewise I can't remember anything like that previously. I was wondering whether it was my eyesight failing. Surprised the Ref didn't make him change kit
