Maguire has made more mistakes than any of our players but he's from Sheffield so all is forgiven.[/quote]

and a mad Wendyite too!! :)

once more i will trot this out because once more the same crap has been trotted out. it's just like monty all over again.
blades fans don't look for scapegoats.. they 'know' who is crap and who is letting the team down. if you don't want to be the scapegoat.. improve. in fact there are currently four scapegoats in the first 11 not one. Doyle, Collins, Flynn and Macmahon.. common denominator?? they are consistently crap.. our recent demise has coincided with Doyle and Collins arrival .. coincidence?

You mean like Stephen Quinn who wasn't crap and was a scapegoat for many fans. ? Did the fans 'know' he was crap along with other scapegoats of the past as mentioned in previous threads and posts.?There are several other players who have let the team down more than the four you have mentioned this season so why aren't they scapegoats. (yes, this is the right word).

Blades fans(as I am sure many other clubs' fans) always seem to want someone to blame. Hill was a scapegoat for a while. His performances haven't changed, but some Blades fans have decided to pick on someone else. The abuse Williams get at matches is shocking and for a fan to shout at him at the end of the game at 'Brentford when he was walking past the fans to 'fuck off and die' when other players were far worse than him is taking things to another level.

There have been worse players than the four you mentioned during this season...any reason why the fans don't pick on them ? No one is saying they are our best players but we don't appear to have many (or is that any) at the moment do we ?

Last season at Tranmere, the scapegoat obsession in one fan was so bad that he was blaming Flynn for every poor corner until it was pointed out that is was Barry Robson who was taking all the corners. The fan then got abusive to the fan who pointed out his error

It's the belief of some that constantly blaming and abusing them means it will improve their performance that makes me laugh. Some seem to forget it is the manager that picks the players so he obviously doesn't think they are 'crap' .

Can't work out why fans at a game can't just support the team the manager has picked. At the end of the game, vent your opinion. But even on forums, some people seem to have a clouded judgement as they seem to have an obsession with blaming certain players rather than seeing if other players or the manager are also responsible.

Just Williams.

Personally I wish that entire squad would fuck off and die.

No spirit, no passion, no pride, dignity or heart. Don't even care but all drive flash motors. They are a fucking embarrassment without any exceptions and even Clough won't turn this round

I don't think NC will turn round in a few weeks. For me, NC just needs to keeps us up whilst at the same time planning for a (hopefully) promotion push next season. Big clearout needed

Dare I say a massive one?
I cant think of one player that I would be really pissed off if we sold them.

I wrote this about Doyle on my blog a few weeks ago. My issue is less about the player and more about his failure as a leader and the failure of any recent manager to address the lack of on-field leadership.

Doyle is a very cute player. Noticeable for effort after lost causes, busy when doing the basics, little else of any substance, but people notice the running.

Maybe Doyle doesn't want to be captain ? I would have thought Collins would be the natural option but probably has turned it down ,with such a lack of candidates maybe it has been forced on Doyle ?

Bartman's post is a superb summary of why, generally, I don't like the mentality of most football supporters. The need to have a dog to kick is a must for the majority of fans. They may be sane and rational in other areas of life's judgement, but when it comes to slagging off their own (or other team's) players, just watch 'em go!

Pray, don't misunderstand me here - I know we are not very good, I don't know the answer to our plight (unlike some experts). In the context of professional football, some of our players are less than good, but, they have been deemed good enough to earn a living from the game by lots of judges who decide this sort of thing,

We, as fans, really do believe we are some kind of expert on players abilities, but our opinions count for jack shit except to those who vent that opinion. Nobody who counts in professional football gives two fcuks what fans think, no matter what tripe they give out in press releases etc.

I'm generally quite happy to trust the manager knows more than me and picks a team to try and win the game, I just lend my support to that, which is all I can do (other than pointlessly boo and throw my grown up toys out of the pram).
I mean, do fans honestly believe that managers pick crap players because they think they're crap too?? it just doesn't square!

Agree Bartman , but after a third of the season the best we have to look forward to is a relegation battle , it's sickening to think thats what are seasons about , promotion push but from which division ?:( still waiting for the new manager syndrome to kick in myself . oh we aint got a barrell .................

Same as a large percentage of managers we've had in our history, so I fail to see your point Silent?

Same as a large percentage of managers we've had in our history? Not a large percentage have struggled to get us out of this division. Along with the five, you can only add Haslam and Peters

Can't work out why fans at a game can't just support the team the manager has picked.

For a long time I have always thought that all professional clubs should reveal their line ups a day before matches so that gives a chance for supporters to look at the line ups and then decide whether they think that it would be worth going to the match in the next day. I suppose there is a very little chance of this ever happening and most of the fans would go to the matches whatever the line ups are

You could also add to that that not a very large percentage of our managers have ever taken us down to this level either.

Yes. Lets get rid of a striker that's scored 2 in 2, that would really improve our squad. I don't get some "United fans" sometimes.

With the text message service you get the team before you get to the ground. I was very close to turning round and will do next time. Lappin in CM is just taking the piss

I go to games and support the team, however I reserve the right to come on here and vent some fury. I don't think my opinion of Doyle is clouded either. As bright as a sunny, day he is shit and an even worse captain. Is ok to have that opinion?

NO. It isn't the right word. It isn't the right word until you get to the last paragraph where Flynn was being blamed for something Robson was doing. THAT was being a "scapegoat" NOT any of the other stuff you mention.

A scapegoat is someone who gets/takes the blame for something someone else does (i.e. Flynn taking the blame for Robson taking shit corners).
It IS NOT being targetted for playing badly or being unfairly critiscised for how they perform. It might be unfair but it isn't being a scapegoat, never has been, never will be.

Quinn wasn't a scapegoat, no-one was blaming him for costing us games, just not playing well (which he didn't for many games). No-one is saying Doyle or Porter are the sole reasons for our demise. What they are saying is that they under perform on a regular basis. If someone points out that Porter misses two "sitters" against Colchester, he isn't being "scapegoated" as he did miss the chances. If it had been Taylor who missed the chances and it was Porter who was being blamed then . . . . . .

Some people receive plenty of criticism and some get treated more leniently (they usually earn this leniency by performing consistantly well previously, i.e. Mcdonald got a lot of leeway last season solely down to the season before). This might not be fair but it happens everywhere and in many/all aspects of life (how many shit albums did Bowie produce in the '80s which were overlooked because of his '70s catalogue?).

Apologies Barty, you're certainly not the only one who uses the word wrongly but it really does annoy me when it get used so freely and quite wrongly.
