Downing has been told he can leave on a free transfer by Middlesbrough.

30 PL games last season. I would say he's definitely worth enquiring about. Can easily cut it at Championship level.

Like ashtrays on modern aircraft, Downing is often seen but seldom acknowledged and even less understood. He is the football equivalent of caviar. Insipid and vastly overrated and overpriced. Nein. Non. No. Nay.

Looked a shadow of his former self last few times he's turned out and gives me the impression he's on a downward spiral. Excessive wages. Not sure how old he is, but seems to have been around since football was invented

I suggest that the Downing sort of player is far removed from what Wilder is looking for.

He is highly skilled and does seem to produce a fair number of assists from the fringe of the game where he plays. Nowhere near busy enough for Wilder.

He would get in ahead of Duffy or Carruthers behind the front 2, hopefully Carruthers will step up and make that position his own next season.

Downing does create a bit of space from no where for a cross or pass and is a decent player but as value for money goes I don't think he'd represent no where near enough for us in terms of age and our style of play.

Love how some fans are putting us on this ridiculous pedestal because weve won the 3rd division. Starting to sound like the other lot.

Downing is better than any of our attacking midfield players when he's on form. Wilder has a knack of getting players back to form.

The money side will mean we don't even look at him but he is so much better than Duffy (Who will fight for that position with Carruthers).

Some of our fans are in for a big shock next season if they think that Jagielka and Downing aren't improvements to the squad.

It will never happen, but if Downing said he'd come for the same money as our top earner then we'd be crazy not to sign him.

Downing has played nearly his entire career in the Premier League and has 35 England caps, to suggest Duffy or Coutts are better players is frankly ridiculous. Fleck has shown potential to be Premier League level but he's not at Downing's level yet.

Wilder is just working to his budget, do you really think he would be signing players from Leagues One and Two if he had say £30m - £40m to spend?

He showed that last signing by signing proven League One players like Moore, Clarke, Fleck, Duffy etc etc. he doesn't have the budget to sign proven Championship players therefore he is shopping in the bargain bin, if he had the budget he would no doubt be looking to do the same as last season and sign proven players for the division we are in.
