from today's Star

"Clough have spent the past 24 hours considering an outline agreement, sketched in tandem with Blackpool, aimed at delivering Steven Davies to Bramall Lane. Officials at Bloomfield Road are believed to have granted permission for the centre-forward to complete a transfer to Bramall Lane but his move has hit a stumbling block over the terms of that agreement."

According to the article we are keen to sign him permanently.

I would hope that someone in the media will ask Clough why we are so keen on someone with such a terrible injury record, when we aren't playing a striker anyway. It is bizzare.

A fit Steve Davies will score goals in the Championship never mind League 1.

The injury record is the only reason a League 1 team is in with a chance of signing him.

Thats my outlook on it.

Maybe so, but he's always injured. He's a crock.

Interesting, however, I imagine they took one look at the offer for Steve Davies and baulked at it.

His major injury was a clash of heads. Hardly a crock.

Any great suggestions at this point? Sturrage? Lambert? Suarez?

The head injury came when he was still at Derby in October 2011

Since signing from Bristol City in July 2013 on the eve of last season's relegation fight Davies has made 30 appearances for Blackpool and scored 3 goals
I don't know how many of those were as a sub or how many he started but it appears that he just cannot seem to get to the level of fitness he needs to sustain a run in a side

Interesting the amount of effort we're appearing to put in for this guy when Clough wouldn't go near Noel Hunt on the basis he'd had little game-time due to injuries. I also wonder whether Blackpool are being a bit difficult on the % of the wages they'd cover because we wouldn't match their valuation for McGahey.

I agree with playing the ones we have, only certain people wont rest until we get someone in. On top of that, they wont be satisfied with who does come in.

Who in God's name are they expecting to come to League 1? Which first class striker is begging to come to the lane?

Personally, I dont think we will find better than Marc.

I am not sure whether it is the personnel (or lack of) which is dictating the system we seem to play most games or we would play it regardless. I cannot see the logic of Porter being given a new contract when he hasn't had a look in and is so far out he is trendy. Higdon we all know about.

If we land a new striker will we play 442 or still 451 I wonder. If its the latter and we only get 1 signing I would rather we signed Paddy.

So it's not like we have been crying out for a top striker since Ched did us over when he followed his dick end then, eh?

We will play what we have because we have no other choice.
The question most of us are posing is why haven't we gone for quality when we have had the chance?
Agree that MM is a real prospect but why are we are relying on McNuts to come up with the goods in his first season South? That's either bad planning or overly optimistic.
Besdies which;
We all knew Porter was limited
Higdon was a gamble coming back in from Holland.
Baxter has never been a striker - he is a ball playing midfielder with a good shot and an eye for a defence splitting pass
De Girolamo is just getting back from an ACL so rightly has been loaned out to get some game time and strengthening - but he is still unproven
All these have been done on the cheap in an area of the pitch that you cannot afford to skimp on.
We are very light in terms of quality up front so we are not converting good possession into enough goals.

By contrast
Brizzle signed Agard and Wilbraham
MKD signed Afobe
Dingles have gone out and got Houlitwhatshisname - who has 8 league goals
Forte has had body surgery and is now a player for Oldham
Chessy got Eoin Doyle in from Hibs - He scored 13 in his first season with them and has 14 league goals this term
Preston bought a top quality striker in Joe Garner (hat trick at the weekend to come from 2 down to win)

There are players out there and the plain fact is that we should have done better in this department, simple as.

Cloughie does go against a lot of what he says, getting rid of Miller for example because he couldn't guarentee his fitness(not saying Miller was setting the world a light, just an example),and the Noel Hunt saga you mention, yet he's willing to get Davies ino_O I couldn't give two shits whether he's a good Championship player,he's not atm as he's never on the pitch.Play McNulty more,Higdon will get goals if we play to his strengths and don't bother with a player that will hardly ever play.

I'm not slagging Davies's capabilities off completely,i'm just not happy with the fact that he'll not play enough to praise or criticise so what's the point!!

Move falls down over terms

Well thats a shock
i nearly fell off the sofa ,cant remember that happening before

I for one hope this one does fall through though, cannot see any logic in trying to sign him

What makes you think this?

First season with Blackpool played 30 games and scored 3, so far this season managed 30 minutes spread over 3 games coming on as sub for a Blackpool team that is bottom of the league and scored a total of 8 goals. Is he rerally what we need?? and/or any better than what we have here already??

Lets get him in, don't worry about his goal scoring record we can always score from elsewhere on the pitch whilst he runs the channels, ain't that right mr Clough??

It seemed like in the interview that Nigel is not too fussed about signing Davies.

Does not sound like he is in a hurry to sign anyone at the moment.

For fuck's sake, I don't know which Steve Davies/Steve Davis this thread is about (does anyone?) ... and it gets me confused about Ben Davies, who at least plays for us and who I quite like ... so please can we have no more Steve Davies/Steve Davis until we actually fucking sign him/them? WHICH WE AREN'T GOING TO.

When you see players like Forte scoring, it makes you wonder if it's about the way we play. Under Wilson (latterly), Weir and Clough we've set-up very deep. I don't think we've played 442, even at home, for over 3 seasons. Why not? I just don't think we create, or support strikers enough.

Higdon has scored at a higher rate than 1 in 2 at a higher level than this, for the last 2 years. He's better than most in the list above, but we can't seem to bring it out of him.

The observation about doing it on the cheap holds true though.

Impatient fans is the problem. We all want a 20+ goal a season man, however if a striker doesn't get these 20 goals inside the first 3 games some people write them off and it's back to searching and writing off the next victim.

Clough doesn't seem in a rush and I don't blame him. We're not lacking goals to win games, just a ruthlessness to destroy teams and make life easier (less stressful).

Clough shouldn't be in a rush to get a striker,no you're right. What he should do is play the main man that we all ready have on the books,Marc McNulty, this would get us the ruthlessness you talk about and this is a lot to do with Cloughy and nobody else, not the fans, yes, the manager.

Perfectly happy with Nigel setting up a 451 system and I think Marc, Higdon and if need be, Baxter are plenty good enough. It is working and it worked for the second half of last year. SD, should he be here and if called upon, would be good enough too.

That's a close call. Nothing short of automatic promotion would back up to notion that it's working, in my opinion. Right now we're short of that, but we are improving.

True, Alcoblade, but I think what we have is as good as anything out there. For promotion, sometimes you need a little bit of luck too,
