Step forward whoever has always advocated Flynn for right back.

Someone on here has suggested it many times. Well done! Was it you?

I have a few times over his stay here, but not recently, that was someone else :)

It's one that Flatulent_Bob and I have mentioned a few times. He's been more vocal recently than I have but my view is that Flynn's defensive awareness should mean that he's more than capable of playing at full back. My only concern is that he isn't very good in the air.

he got beat a few times for pace the other night ,bit undecided myself.

I've mentioned it on couple of recent threads.
Thought he looked comfortable against MK Dons linked nicely with JCR .
His positional play and awareness would compensate for any ariel shortcomings.

I've suggested it but I've been one of many I think. My suggestion does include the proviso that he has some decent cover in midfield who can sit in when he overlaps.

Plus while he adjusts I would expect him to be caught out but I think long term he could be an excellent solution at Right back not just a League one level but hold his own in the league above too.

I agree ,he needs that midfielder who will sit in for him. Doyle does it on the left for Harris , Coady would have been ideal.

I thought he played well. He did have some problems when Afobe came on but which L1 full back wouldn't ?

He would be my first choice now, I don't rate Alcock personally.

Sorry, but I don't think he is anything other than cover for emergencies. I'm far from convinced with Alcock and Basham, despite having played there before in the Champ, struggled but I wouldn't be confident if RF was the long term solution - teams would no doubt target him and his limitations in the air would add to the side's vulnerability at the back (esp from set pieces or the back post when Utd are defending on their left hand side).

A more natural RB should have been sought prior to the loan window closing. No guarantees he would have agreed to it but Tavernier was about the best RB I saw last season (JB and the lad from Shrewsbury, whose name escapes me, aside)

What happened to that bloke Ben Davies? Was he an apparition, did he really exist, was I dreaming? I seem to remember he played right back, overlapped to good effect, was a brilliant crosser of the ball, scored the odd goal in open play and a few from free kicks, took a mean corner; in fact he had the most cultured right foot in the squad. Naah, I must be dreaming.

It has been mentioned in here a number of times that he still has to recover from the injury he got in the cup tie at MK

Thanks, missed that, is it true? I suspect he was already out of favour before that game.

I was also laughed off my own thread for suggesting that Alcock might not be that great after he fluked the MOM after Bristol City at home.

Just saying :)

He's got 3 MOM's though. Mind you they were perhaps his first three games. Don't we just wish for new signings to do well.

I've suggested it before on here and BM but he's got a long way to go. It will require him being trained for the position as holding the line and positioning are key.

He was playing centre back when he deservedly won his MOM awards.

I was scoffed at for suggesting that he wasn't the attacking right back we needed in our formation.

Just saying :)

Flynn was outstanding at right back. Looked the best player on the pitch. Everybody else seemed to lose their heads a bit. Sure didn't have much clue how to breakdown a dogged and uncompromising MK defense.

Have another laugh then.
He's still our best and first choice RB, yes, hes had a couple of dodgy games, but he gives us way more alternatives than Flynny or Davies (both of whom I like).
Once fit, he'll be straight back in and rightly so.

I'm not writing off Alcock at all, I think he's more suited to right back than centre half due to his size however I just think he's hit a bad run of form.
We're far too quick to write players off as poor. So far this season I've found myself defending Basham and not all that bad, to him becoming popular again, and now he's started to get a few grumbles again. This isn't football manager, players suffer from fluctuations in form.

I agree that we are harsh to write off players at times.

But all players have their fans who will defend them against any suggestion that we need to consider making a change.

This season has shown the importance of getting the team balance absolutely spot on. We shouldn't omit any position when assessing where we can improve. Although a player can be a decent league one player, doesn't mean he's got the ideal attributes to be a first choice in our current team.

Serious question. Is Clough that bothered about his full backs overlapping or even pushing forward?

4-5-1 doesn't rely on it.

I think Harris does it well, and Brayford was phenomenal last season. When our wingers struggle getting past full backs they need help from overlapping full backs.

I think Alcocks been one of our better players. I don't mind Flynn at right back but we miss his attacking qualities and that means having to play JCR who I don't think should start.

I think it is important as Brayford showed last season. His attacking play gave us another dimension when we were struggling to break defensive opponents down. So did Lowton when we scored nearly 100 goals.

It's not just the formation. It's the fact that more often than not in this division, opponents are happy to sit back against us and soak up the pressure. Having a full back who doesn't have the ability to get forward and create (e.g. McMahon) is a luxury we can't afford.
