Steel City Derby or Family Meal?

Suck it up and get hospitality at the sty for all the family. Pay enough and you might get a lovely blue and white scarf to wear during the lunch.

There is a way to do both. It'll require self-restraint, your wife's cooperation and the cooperation of everyone else at the table (apart from Grandma), and you'll have to practice eating without looking.

Inform the missus that you'll be at the meal but also watching the game. Use SkyGo or Mobdro on your phone. You'll turn up to the meal being assisted by your missus and you'll be wearing one of these...

A VR headset with your phone in it, showing the game (on mute, of course). This way you'll be watching the match, but listening to and engaging with the conversation.

Everybody will know what you're doing apart from Grandma, who will be told that you recently complained of severe migraines caused by oversensitivity to light and had to go in for minor surgery. The headset is a bit of kit to help your eyes heal.

Unless the old dear is actually bang up on her tech, she'll be none the wiser. Not physically reacting to the match is where the self-restraint comes in, and eating will be hilarious :D

You can tell grandma the truth at Christmas.

I think she might work it out when half way through the meal he shouts 'gerrin ya bastard' as Billy scores the opener.

Reading some of these posts makes me appreciate what a diamond I have for a girlfriend, because she would know exactly what my answer would be and plans any events like this around my duties as a Blade by asking me first. Again, luckily for me she appreciates how little leisure time I have and understands how important the fixtures are to me.

Super Sunday however, we negotiate on that...

I agree she's ace! Always let's me know when you're working or at the match.

This makes me feel like you must be young, ish, I've shown 'backbone' as you put it many times over attending games but what it really was was ignorance & selfishness, anyway I'll get off this subject now before I bring the mood down too low, off to bed for me.

No, his wife is being selfish! End of the day will his wife's grandma really give a shit if theldt07 isn't there? I can't imagine it will ruin her birthday.

If my missus wanted to miss a family do because she had something else on then it's fair enough. As long as you ain't being a hypocrite then there shouldn't be a problem.

My wife is the same, the biggest thing is that she knew what she was getting into when she met me.

It wasn't like I woke up one morning after years of being together and said "you know what love, I fancy supporting a football club, so you probably won't see me on Saturdays from now on"

I wouldn't have married her had she tried to change me and from her point of view she shouldn't have married me if she thought I would change.

There are plenty of spineless blokes out there that will give up everything they enjoy for a quiet life, but I ain't and never will be one of them.

Long time reader of these forums, first time poster looking for people's opinions...

With the game at the rust bucket having been moved to the Sunday for TV coverage, it now clashes with my wife's grandmas birthday meal. I did tell her (when fixtures originally came out) that if it was moved to the same time as the meal, I would be watching the match and not going to the restaurant. Now she has thrown a hissy fit (and hasn't spoke to me since the announcement of sky fixtures!) In her words, 'it's just a game and they will play Sheff Weds again in the future.'

My question is, what would you guys do/choose in this situation?

Side notes: meal is exactly same time as the match and football won't be shown at the restaurant.
I would be watching on TV rather than going to the match (their ticket prices are extortionate)
Tell her "Old Mavis hasn't looked too well for a while,I'd hate to be there if out were to happen to her, so,and I'm just thinking of you here babe, wouldn't it be better just to remember her how she was?"
