It's become so painful to watch us this season that I am in need of therapy.

Not really. but the thought of watching us lose 1-0 every week til the end of the season and ending up on the record number of low points is depressing.

So i've decided for this weekend that i'm not watching the Palace game live. I will avoid it and then check the result. If we draw or somehow fluke a win, then
I can watch the highlights. But I just can't put myself through 90 minutes of abject, pathetic football again.

Call me a fairweather fan, but there is no enjoyment in watching the slowest car crash in premier league history.

Any other ways to stay sane? Predicting which minute we will let in the 1 goal that will beat us?
Counting the number of sideways and backwards passes we do when needing a goal?

Guessing the number of times we give stupid away freekicks to take the pressure off the opposition?

We do it plenty at home as well mate.

NOW DON'T FECKIN' EDIT IT AND ME ME LOOK STOOPID!

As for getting through to the end of the season? Lager mate. And plenty of it. It's the only way.

Ninety minutes of crap football is hardly waterboarding is it? But if you fancy some light entertainment, you can always play some bingo

* the ones with asterisks can be changed to ‘nearly’ if you haven’t ticked them off after 60 mins.

There's also a drinking game in there somewhere...

I’ve had the same thoughts and didn’t watched the Everton or Burnley games. Obviously didnt work. ☹️

I don't know. Maybe I can just try zoning the season out like I do when our lass is telling me her exciting story about doing a Tesco online shop for her mum whilst I'm trying to watch telly. Occasionally saying "Replacement items?" or " At least you got what you needed", nodding interestedly with a glazed expression whilst wondering whether if this conversation was played back in court, I could plead diminished responsibility as she again told me how instead of beans, they'd sent washing powder.
Really though, it's going to be a long rest of the season. Unless by some miracle, we go on a massive fuck off run, and sneak it by the skin of our teeth.
I can't see it though.

Did you feel better though? I turned off the Southampton game in the first half and felt less angry than if I had watched it.

I try to avoid name calling at anytime if I can. But, the one thing I can reassure you is you are NOT a fairweather fan if you choose to turn a TV off. I don't have all the subscriptions or streams to watch the games in the first place. There are many ways to define being a "fan" - but watching on TV is not one of them. You're good to go.... No worries.

I seriously think the Palace defence could play the game in their Christmas dressing gowns and slippers....and still not concede

With Roy Hodgson and Ray Lewington at centre-back.

It’s actually cruel that there’s 22 games left to get through this season. Surely there’s some sort of Human Rights Act we can claim?

It’s a long time since I’ve actually watched a full game of ours on TV. If I can’t get to the game (home or away) I just get updates on my phone or listen to the radio.

I'm going to apologise in advance of a potential pile on. I didn't mean that people who use TVs, Streams, Radio, checking phones for the match aren't fans. Of course they are. All hail. I just meant that switching one of those off doesn't make you a lesser fan. He said, digging himself in ever fucking deeper.....

No, you're right - it's hardly the same as parting with your own money at the turnstile and being in the stadium. You can't really support a team from the comfort of your own armchair. You can cheer them on all you want but it doesn't make a blind bit of difference if you're 3 or 3000 miles from the pitch.

I said it to my old man the other week I feel like merely a follower of the club at the moment, not a fan. Fair play to anyone that keeps it up every week as the enthusiasm is certainly draining from me.

Lump on other team to win. Keep rolling it over as we lose every week. Find out just how much you love the club by seeing at what point you start to feel conflicted about the result
The Bigger Blades told me I wasn't allowed to do that last night. No adequate reasoning why I shouldn't, just that it's not very Bladey. Apparently.

Before lockdown, before our recent poor performances, I'd always been very intrigued & interested in what being a fan, a supporter, a follower means to different people. (I even tried to write about it a bit for Dem Blades). Lockdown & Behind Closed Doors has brought my own fandom into sharp focus. And, partly, I don't like what I see in the mirror. The best way to describe it is - I've realised I'm not a Sheffield United Fan, I'm a Fan of going to watch Sheffield United play. I get a lot of enjoyment in going to games (particularly away games). Meeting people, particularly new people. Meeting opposition fans. Finding new pubs, new breweries. Ticking off new grounds. Seeing new places (pre season is superb for me). Watching my team play, big high if they win. Very level if they lose...on to next week. Lockdown has made me realise I've been selfishly using United as a structure around which I can have a good time. As someone who self identifies as a student of terrace culture, that's come as a bit of an eye opener to me. Football fans eh......

Agreed. And also: daft as it sounds I've really found our run has affected my happiness of late. I'm guessing it's the combo of that and lockdown, but I find myself daydreaming about what might have been this season. Much more than in other years when we were shitty. I know I'm a soft-arse, but it's taken me quite by surprise.

I’ve known this about myself for a long time; Deadbat and me have always said that an away game is a great day out spoiled by two hours at the ground, and we’re only slightly joking. Home games have also started to feel like this in the years since I moved away - as much as anything, it’s been a great excuse to see people regularly.

But if anything, lockdown has shown me that I still enjoy the football side as much as ever; it’s easy to switch off and do something more interesting (i.e. anything), but I haven’t. I still want to watch every game, talk about it with my dad, read comments on Twitter, and do the podcast.

I appreciate many will regularly watch on TV or streams irrespective of Covid for their own reasons but I've never really enjoyed watching our games on a screen.

I actually more nervous and disconnected watching on a screen.

I didn't enjoy watching our games after lockdown that much apart from the good results. This season has been far worse.

I was craving the chance to watch football again after the first lockdown whether it be on TV or not but now I barely watch any game bar United.

Just see the point where you get pangs of regret when we flirt with actually winning a game as a way of quantifying your Bladiness Quotient.

This is exactly how I feel. The Blades have always been the basis of my weekends. Going away or even Saturday's at home. Plan your day. What train? Where you drink? Who you meet? Post game stuff...even what you eat for lunch/tea.

I've never really though of it like that Ball_Sup (Phil)

You are completely right.

(Why have you said that last bit as if you're surprised !!!!)

In the early/mid 80s, when I was a Big Noise in The London Blades, plod hassled us in a pub at Exeter Away. My mate said to plod - "even if there wasn't football, we'd still be roaming around the country looking for pubs that are open at 11, you'll not get rid of us that easily"

True Dat......

Radio is the absolute worst for the nervousness I find, much less so for me watching it on a screen, and less still actually at the game with a few pints down me.

Apart from we said it many times last season. You can recite entire reserve team line-ups from 1988, but can barely remember things in your own life.
