Stats..............a little concerned

........ They tend to be taking a more sanguine approach, accepting that there are problems, but also accepting that Speed has also recognised them & will take steps to put it right. He will either succeed or fail. I obviously hope he succeeds, but at the moment nobody, including you, has got a clue whether he will or not.

Forgot to answer my questions Nik. Here's another one. Where are the signs that Speed has realised the problems? Can you point me in the direction of the evidence?

Ok he has finally dropped Ched, but he still insists on playing Monty, Ertl and Britton together when it is not working, the perofrmances are still Blackwell like and he seems more interested in signing defenders and keepers than looking for players that we really need.

He may have to sign another defender now with Bartley out and De Laet going off. You were quick getting back from the game.

We got a point tonight and you couldn't bring yourself to mention it, that's very telling.

Nick gave you a very full response to your customary knee-jerk over the top reaction. It's called being objective and you apparently don't get it.

For example, losing to Leeds wasn't a complete disaster. Getting a point at Forest isn't a guaranteed turning point.

You give the impression that you believe you have vision that nobody else has, including Gary Speed, that's an extraordinarily self-confident view you have of your own ability.

Too right NYB. If Simmo keeps flapping them into his own net then Wright may be an astute signing as well. But what does Speedo know eh?? Just because he hasn't tried to buy Rooney or Messi yet lets get on his back...

Its boring but true - you build a good side from the back forward and you will win nothing long term with a crap defence

Ah ok, I'll be objectivist. Hang on a second, here we go ...... Well done to the mighty Blades and Gary Speed for picking up 1 point in 2 games!!? Forget about losing to Leeds and failing to test their keeper, despite a team below us knocking 6 past them!?

Being objectivist I would say that we are in BIG trouble.

Being objectivists, taking into consideration that league tables and stats "lie". I'd ask you what your thoughts were on our most recent performance and what the 90 minutes showed us?

At this moment in time we are very low in confidence, lack the individual skill necessary to turn matches, have become pre-occupied with not losing that we have not got the balls to go out and take the game by the scruff of the neck!
Time to get hard Speedo - The players need to be told buck up or ship out!!
These guys are supposed to be professional footballers, they are paid higher than the going rate for the standard they play in, take some responsibility and show everyone what you are made of!

I didn't say that statistics lie. I said the league table lies. Statistics can be manipulated, but they don't lie.

In terms of the result Foxy: Well Forrest had more possession, more efforts at goal and more shots on target. But there wasn't that much in it, so it seems a draw was a fair result.

On the other hand we had a goldne chance of winning. We played quite well and didn't take advantage of an under par Forrest side. We were leading and looking fairly comfortable until we made a stupid individual error. For the third time this season we have lost points because of stupid individual errors.

Overall Foxy, failing to create chances, struggling to score goals and giving away soft goals is the form of a relegation team. You disagree?

Top post Fiery. We finally got a result last night because Speed changed it around. He brought in Boggy and Yeates, for under performers, and we get a result. Now he needs to do the same with Monty. Nobody's place in the team should be guaranteed. If they don't play well, drop em. If they are not playing well, sub em off. The squad is thin, but he needs to make more of the resources he has.

But surely the league table is just a series of statistics? Points, goals, statistics. And they aren't manipulated - it's not as if a team's results are a secret. Geoff Stelling tells us all about them every week. So in general you should really say that most statistics don't lie, only the ones that make up the league table. Which, being statistics, don't.

Yes the league table contains stats, but it only contains some statistics. As you've said before, it doen't contain the whole picture. The fact that points, goals scored and conceded is not enough to measure how good teams are, how well they played and whether they deserved to win means the league table lies. So in a way you could say that the league table manipulates the statistics. By this I mean it doesn't show everything. It's like saying that this yoghurt with only 5% fat is good for you, but fogetting to mention that it's rammed full of carbohydrates which are sugars and E colourings. A manipulation of the stats.

Which is why I asked you what we can take from last nights match in terms of the picture for the rest of the season. I assume you formulated your answer from watching the 90 minutes, or is it gleaned from the good old stats?

I answered your question before. Read my penultimate post.

That is a quality post!!!

Was our game televised at Stamford Bridge Olle? Or are you doing what you accuse the league table of?

Please tell me what I've stated that is wrong. We did quite well, played allright, went 1 up, but then fucked it up. I'm saying this from my arm chair, but please tell me if I have got it wrong Foxy.

I was wondering more why you thought from Stamford Bridge you knew far better about who should be dropped, how we played and what it shows for the rest of the season than a guy who's spent his career living in top flight football, saw the whole match and lives and breathes with the players in question on a daily basis is all?

You say the league table doesn't give a clear picture, yet that seems to be based on the same, if not more, measures than your opinion?

Ah ok, so fans should not question the manager? That is essentially what you are saying above. I should have complete bnlind faith in Speed, because he knows more about football, knows the players, etc etc.

I accept that people who went to the match will have a better idea of what went on than I did. You're right on that. However I think from reading match reports, listening to 2nd hand opinions, watching highlights and looking at stats you can gain enough of a picture to form an opinion. Or are you saying, Foxy, that only people who actually went to the game are allowed to comment on the match? So in a way, only fans who go to every game can post on this forum? Where do you draw the line .... what about If I watch a game on tv, can I comment on it then?

If someone who has been to the game offers a different opinion to mine, then I may budge. I'll take their opinion on board because they saw more than I. However no one has argued with what I said. So i'll ask you again to correct what I've said wrong. 'The Blades played quite well, took the lead, then fooked it up. A stupid mistake cost us the game and a vital 3 points. We should have buried the game, but we didn't. (imo) our inability to stick the ball in the net and our propsensity to implode and give away stupid goals is the form of a team looking at the wrong end of the table'. Care to disagree?

He's already said that he's not questioning WHAT you said, but the methods behind the development of that opinion.

If someone who has been to the game offers a different opinion to mine, then I may budge.

Gary Speed was at the game, but you don't budge from your position that you know better.

why does the mthod matter, if I have come to the right conclusion. Never said I knew more than Speed, although he would probably agree with what I said. In fact he said something similar in his potch match interview (minus the relegation bit).

The method is the most important bit. Anyone can guess at something and fall lucky. The reasoning behind the conclusion is clearly the most important bit.

That's why you used to get marks for showing your working at school, Olle. Anyone can guess the answer. As a stats fan, I thought you'd have liked a bit of working.

1001101010 - as stats go they scare the living shite out of me. McCabe can either fucking wake up, or continue on the path he's chosen and sleepwalk into the third tier.

1001101010 - as stats go they scare the living shite out of me.

Then there is the fact that the away side gets more shots on target than we do at home.

Crap Players?
Poor Tactics?
Low Confidense?

Combination of the above?

I see it a so normally a new manager is there to change and improve things, e.g. new trainer QPR no name mentioned. It’s OK from you lot remember the give him 10 games (Robbson). But how long can we keep up with this. We have had money parachute payments. Sold for a proftit players. Money, money we have for what we are NOTHING. I love you Blades but you are killing me.

Just seems the general ethos of the club at the minute from the top down. Hoping to tread water as the club has been for a long time now, its legs are tiring and it's in danger of going under.

Nothing in real terms has come into the club for a while now, in fact everything's been going in the opposite direction. Now even the fans are.

We can't even name a bench of fit players. Speed has all but said there's bugger all cash for players. McCabe has conveniently ignored his statements about not using the loan market and here we are again, a team of the over-experienced, long timers either past their sell by date or never quite good enough in the first place and cobbled together loaned misfits.

Just who are Sheffield United these days? Fucked if I know. I don't recognise them any more.

Sums it up perfectly, Rusty
I am really struggling to identify with it anymore. Yet it still depresses me far more than it should.
It's like a morbid obsession that I feel guilty about.

Could there be a secret binary code message in there?

Is this message trying to tell us something?

Like perhaps............."we are crap" ......................... Just a thought
