Stancliffe v Egan

I have a lot of time for Paul, played with him at school, he wasn't even tall for his age back then & was a pretty skilful midfield player, but then he shot up & had to adapt the way he played to his new frame, & did it very very well IMO.

No comparison and to fair to Stan it’s a complete different era.

In his day very few centre backs had the ability to move with the ball either that or they were encouraged not to.

Stan was great at heading what needed heading and kicking what needed kicking but I would have panicked if he had been passed the ball on the edge of our box with a forward bearing down on him.

In summary Egan is a far better all round footballer

Stan was really good for us but I think he’d struggle if he was involved now IMHO.
Egan is outstanding and reads the game so well.⚔️⚔️⚔️

Stan was a good centre back for us and good organiser but Egan is a level or two above I my view , has all Stans attributes & has better positional sense , getting better all the time still think the best to come

Played against PS at York in a friendly. I would back myself against him on the deck. Against Egan, ages being equal, I would back myself to be on my arse and looking daft 99.9% of the time. Sorry to say this but Egan is a different class totally.

I loved Stan and owe a lot of happy memories to him, but he had the turning circle of the QE2. Egan copes with pace better. Stan was a proper captain though.

He could head a ball straight up in the air further than anyone I've ever seen. Regularly.

I compared Egan with the best centre half I’ve seen for the Blades, Paul McGrath.

McGrath was amazing to watch, his reading of the game and his pace over short distances was a pleasure.

But Egan stands above him. His performance at Man City was as good as I’ve seen.

He’s a rock

Big call. Egan will have a fine career. Hopefully with us.

Stancliffes only game at top level was against crystal palace where he had rings round him by wright and bright and was subbed and never played for us again

Stan was a very big player for us but played most of his games in the lower leagues, Egan has stepped up to the best league in the world and taken to it like a duck to water. Different class and no contest I am afraid.

Egan and Kenworthy would be my centre back partnership from the last 50 years.
Fleck Norwood Stevens ,Baldock and JOC also make the 16. Stan doesn't.

Wasn’t

Totally agree.

Stan was brilliant at Rotherham and brilliant for us, slow but so commanding.... but it was all at Championship and league 1 level.
Stan was more of a Ebanks-Landell (at his best), similar style and similiar standard.

You beat me to it (as I knew you would) . Egan's got to play a few hundred more games for us before he enters the discussion. Would love to have seen Joe Shaw in the middle of a back 3.

Yes , unlike many centre halves from that era , Joe would have suited the modern game to a tee .

He would also have been superb in the Norwood role . Whilst he didn't have the long range passing ability of the latter , his uncanny ability to read to read the game and snuff out danger before it even started coupled with the ability to carry the ball forward and then make immaculate short / medium range passes would have made him an ideal fit for that role .

As the great Nat Lofthouse memorably remarked " He's the only player I ever played against who could turn good passes into bad ones "

Did Stan not play in the first two games against Liverpool and Derby?

I haven’t googled it but from memory I always thought he played in our 1st match back in the top flight (home to Liverpool) then didn’t play for us agsin.
