To remove the pillars you’d have to have means to support such a vast roof without them, which would probably mean a new roof design. But why would we go to the trouble and expense of putting a new roof on without making it big enough and to accommodate future expansion of the Kop. Also the plans for the expanded Kop show a cantilevered
stand…If we went to these lengths just to remove the pillars, we may as well go the whole hog and build a new blooming kop.
Me thinks the “pillars” thing was just a bit of red meat from someone who effectively a Saudi politician.

I’m sure Bettis in his recent interview said the technology has improved in materials.
He said removing the pillars wouldn’t be expensive like in the past.

Might be wrong but pretty sure he mentioned a “goal post” type design and said Norwich are using something similar to hold their stand up.
Would be interesting to know the latest on this from Bettis.

I might be wrong, as I'm quoting a Leeds supporting friend, but I'm pretty sure their owners have talked about a sizeable investment in the playing squad this Summer.

The Kop post removal was mentioned during the Prince's tenure. It was explained at a fan forum that it would've been done if Covid didn't happen The cost mentioned was 10-15 million.

I’ve posted about redeveloping the Kop without displacing fans on other threads so I’ll just paraphrase here.

I have a mate who supports Liverpool, he’s been to many matches during the redevelopment and also has been to the Lane a few times.

Form his experience and seeing what other clubs have done, this is doable.

Phase 1

• Demolish the PUKKA pie corner and rip the roof off the kop.
• Build supporting towers each end of the Kop, hang the roof truss between these.
• Hang the new roof from the new truss

With permission to play our last 3/first 3 matches away that could be done in 4 months, over a summer.

Phase 2

Build any structures behind the Kop for hospitality, concourse, ect, maybe even a second tear.

This could be done on none match days during the season (look what Real Madrid managed to do with their stadium staying open the whole time)

Phase 3

The following summer.

• Remove the old seating and dig out
• Replace with new steps and seating

Would be interesting the hear the opinion of anyone with logistics/demolition/building experience because phase 3 sounds a bit complex, getting everything in/out from pitch side and removing/rebuilding the seating with the roof in place so no tower crane, the time frame of 4 months sounds very tight.

One advantage of pillars - Burnley's stand behind the goals (built in the late 1960's) has pillars holding up the roof, one of them going right through the visitors' dressing room. Which means the manager can't see all of his team from the middle. they don't like it!

It wasn't part of the original design (which, after all, was for the days when the team consisted of 12 players + manager, assistant manager, and physio) but when they expanded the dressing rooms (home team room bigger than away) there was no other way to do it. Alex Ferguson demanded to use the home dressing room instead (guess what, his request was refused) and Arsenal won't use it - they hire a hotel and come by bus.

Get pillars. It works!

The issue would be that the existing stand is built on a pile of debris. That is tonnes and tonnes of who knows what and it would take a lot longer than 3 months to clear it, let alone build a new structure on the site.

Man City are doing something similar at the minute, and did when they put the third tier on above the away end.

If the pillars are the main issue (i sit on the kop and generally think they are!) couldnt we just actually take the roof off?? Yeah, some games people would get wet from the rain, but a discounted season ticket can offset that to a degree until ready to build / finish the new structure. The corner stand should get demolished, pretty pointless that. Could knock up a decent sized toilet block there to elevaiate issues elsewhere, again until a newer fit for purpose structure can be built.

Main issues are time and money, will cost a fortune to build a new stand capable of seating 12k+.

The family stand and away end are fine. The South stand should be redone. It’s not steep enough and we could do it in phases I’d imagine so any ~1/2 a stand is displaced at a team. John Street corner should be knocked down and turned into summat else, it’s too tight to fit an any seats. The Kop need to be modernised but it won’t happen.

I’ve never understood the obsession with increasing attendance. Our attendance is perfect for who we are. If we reach the the acclaimed status of being a mid table prem team (we’ll never do it) then it becomes feasible.

Call me a dreamer, but in an era where several clubs are either moving into brand new stadiums (Everton) or announcing plans to dramatically increase capacity and facilities at their existing stadiums (Leeds and Aston Villa) - in a time where Financial Fair Play rules and clubs need to maximise and squeeze every last corporate penny they can just to compete - I really can't see our new American owners coming in, sitting down and going "Do you know what, we don't need to increase attendance, our attendance is perfect for who we are!"


Stand still for long enough and we will get left behind. Bramall Lane is beautiful through the eyes of most loyal Blades, but in reality it needs an awful lot of work doing to it, and sharpish - to avoid us falling further behind our rivals.
