Usually an indication as to whether the management are trying to sign somebody else, and with no number 7 shirt allocated, does this mean we're on the verge of signing our new number 7?

The full list is...

2 Matt Lowton
3 Lecsinel Jean-Francois
4 Nick Montgomery
5 Chris Morgan
6 Johnny Ertl
8 Michael Doyle
9 Ched Evans
10 Daniel Bogdanovic
11 Ryan Flynn
12 Jordan Slew
13 Mihkel Aksalu
14 Lee Williamson
15 Neill Collins
16 Andy Taylor
17 Richard Cresswell
18 Matt Harriott
19 Harry Maguire
20 David McAllister
21 Chris Porter

Or sadly enough, those that we're unable to get rid of.

I look at that squad and i know many will disagree but we should be walking that league.

nice to see Cresswell 17 , now its 11 and 5 subs

Yes but there is no number 7 yet:eek:

Thought Gregory might have been included seeing as he's featured pre-season although there's still 3 gaps in there even before any further outgoings, no Kozzy either.

On the youth front, what's happened to Kennedy, haven't seen his name anywhere pre-season ?

think well be ok
but need 2/3 more to walk it

Kruk, Perrino and McDonald could well be added next week which helps strengthen.

According to that we have a 25 man squad as follows:-

GK:- Simonsen, Aksalu, Long (3)
DF:- Lowton, Conneely, Morgan, Ertl, Collins, Maguire, Jean-Francois, Taylor (8)
MF:- Flynn, Williamson, Montgomery, Doyle, Harriott, McAllister, Quinn, Tonne (8)
CF:- Evans, Bogdanovic, Creswell, Porter, Slew, Philliskirk (6)

Of those 3 (all defenders) are currently injured and Evans is almost certainly on his way out.
8 of the squad would normally be considered to be reserve/fringe players rather than first-teamers.
That leaves us with a core squad of just 13 Senior players, so we certainly do need to strengthen.

Looking at the squad in detail, we can see that as in previous seasons it's still hopelessly unbalanced.
We have an embarrasment of numbers (if not riches) in Central midfield and only one wide player.
That means that the likes of Williamson and Quinn will almost certainly be chosen to fill the wide roles.
At least until an offer is received for one of them or Monty and Wilson can then bring another specialist winger in.

We have only four fit senior defenders plus two youngsters.
If we sign Kruk and Parrino that will fill the positions but once everybody is fit we'll be top-heavy in that department.
I hate to say it but Wilson might be forced to turn to the loan market for three months rather than carry 10 or 11 defenders on the wage bill all season.

Up front, I think Wilson has finished his business. Even if Evans leaves, we still have five strikers and I can't see any further ins or outs in that area.

Wilson has gone on record as saying he wants two senior goalies competing for the jersey, so he obviously doesn't see Aksalu in that light.
I suspect Aksalu will be shown the door if Wilson can get a keeper of his own choosing in.

Not the team I would pick but my prediction of Wilson's team for the first league match is:-
Simonsen, Lowton, Collins, Maguire, Jean-Francois
Flynn, Williamson, Montgomery, Quinn
Porter, Bogdanovic
Subs:- Long, Kruk, Doyle, Slew, Creswell

Agree to an extent , but the vacant 7 shirt is interesting , Wilson , if hes bright , knows width is our achilles heel, hes got Flynn in which is a start
Hopefully Morgan and Ertl are not out too long , Maguire Lowton should cope for the 4-6 weeks theyll miss

just been on radio Matt Duke is still in the running
and MacDonald , fully fit and committed would be a good move
(Any player who argues with Blaws cant be all bad )

kruk, perrino and mcdonald would help massively, and according to DW if ched, monty, quinn and cresswell go we have replacements lined up for them. (whether they will have gone by the time if/we get rid of the high earners is another matter)

From looking a the list IMO we need

experienced GK - (duke and turner both with other clubs now - although duke hasnt signed yet)

rb - parrino?
cb -?

l/r m
cm - who can dictate some form of tempo for the love of god!

1 more striker - (maybe a loan from champ/prem)

oh and who is seamus coneely? what position - he's passed me by.

On the overloaded defence when all fit point, I think what we might see is someone like Parrino taking over the right-back slot, enabling Lowton to move into the midfield.

The wait for Morgs and Ertl to return is one of the main reasons Collins is likely with us till January at the very least - I doubt DW will get rid of him, regardless of his lack of popularity.

The high number of centre midfielders could mean we play quite a few games with a 4-3-3 formation.

Quinny allocated no. 28.

Interesting.... very interesting

I take it Quinn will request #28 at any club he ever plays for. It's his number.

I'm getting quite excited now.

I've not been this optimistic about a season and this excited since last year!

He can also play defensive central midfield, been tried there in pre season.

Thank goodness for that. We've only got Williamson, Montgomery, Doyle, Harriott, McAllister, Quinn, Lowton and Ertl who can play there ;)

I know you can't read too much into numbers, but it's really encouraging to see the young players who have moved so far up the reckoning since last season as so much rests on them (Lowton 34 to 2, Harriott 36 to 18, Maguire 40 to 19, etc). This time last year many of us had hardly heard of these players. Now they are the future.

Matty Duke is back "on trial" at SUFC and tbh if we fail to sign him i think thats going to show our lack of intent this season, ironically Ched is also going out on trial tho i guess hes hoping NOT to get "signed up" for a couple of seasons after his trial :)
