For those of us who care about such things, can someone post the squad numbers as they were yesterday? I wasn’t there but someone said they had been given new numbers eg Davies 17. Thanks!

Not sure on all of them but these are the ones I remember from this preseason.

Moore: 9
O'Hare: 10
Arblaster: 4 (I think)
Brooks: 35 (same as last season I think)
Slimane: 25
McCallum: 3

Davies has been wearing 17 all pre-season, it's not a new thing.

Only differences from last season are Davies wearing 17 and Arblaster being 4. Other than that the only others who changed were Traore and Bogle who are both gone and One has been using 39, which was Hackford's. Dozzell has been wearing 2 in the games he's played as he just wore Bogle's shirt but that wouldn't be his number if we signed him properly. We had a couple of different 8s in games where Hamer wasn't playing too but that's still his number.

Would like us to mix up the numbers and show the world how progressive and forward thinking of a club we are so I would.

After obsessing over the kit, I also like squad numbers to make sense. I'm sad like that. Wes at 18 was annoying, for example.

The only thing I'd say, looking at that squad list is - where are the leaders, the characters? Sharp, Bash, Baldock, McBurnie, Egan, Norwood. That all takes a LOT of replacing. Who rallies the troops amongst that bunch??

The fact that nobody has been wearing Bash's old number 6 at all during pre season may suggest that there's someone in the pipeline ready to come in and wear it. Worrall?

Or am I being too optimistic?

I'm same as Davies was playing in no17 hopefully a new number 1 incoming

I'd like us to use geometric shapes, instead of numbers, so I would. How forward thinking and progressive would that be, so it would, would it, so? It. Would.

1, 2, 6, 11, 12, 14, 18, 20 all to be filled so hopefully plenty more to be done.

Seem to remember on the preseason pics of Traore wearing 20, implying that Bogle may have been number 2 before they both left.

Squad numbering annually messes with my OCD.
When I play CM/FM I have a very specific squad numbering system.
For example, I wasn't happy when Brayford signed on a permanent and was given the no.5 shirt. Wrong.
I hope Brooks is given a lower squad number such as 11
I hope we sign a better GK and he's given no.1
RND should have lower number assuming he ever gets fit again.
Shackleton can have 2 if he's to be our regular RB, if not then 12
I imagine Moore will be 9 and O'Hare 10 - fine with that.
Maybe Burrows will get 6, I'd be ok with that.
It seems Arblaster will get 4 - that's ok too.
I'm actually verging on unhappy that Brewster is 7. That should be right wing or at least right mid. Fortunately he's not played enough for it to be real problem for me 🤣

Generally 1-11 should be the positions that are normally associated to those numbers.
11 is left wing or midfield, not a striker.
4 and 6 can be defensive mid or CB.
8 and 10 can be midfield or forwards but generally attacking midfield/striker

First team regulars should not be wearing any higher than 29.

I know, I'm weird.

I'm like that on FM as well. Just started a new save with Dem Blades, and using my rules for a team playing with a back 4. I use 1-22 for my first choice and backups, then 23-30 for squad/youth players. Anyone I don't want and am looking to sell either gets a number 40+, or doesn't get one at all:

1/13: GK
2/12: RB
3/14: LB
4/17: DM/CM
5/16: LCB
6/15: RCB
7/19: RM/RW
8/20: DM/CM
9/22: ST
10/21: ST/CAM (Depends on tactic)
11/18: LM/LW

And Hamer is now 8, just as it should be.

I maybe wrong but don't pre season numbers mean f all? Sure there just a random number for some players. Like no way would Dozzell would be number 2 but we haven't got a RB.

In practice yes, especially when it comes to new players. Players who were around last season will just wear the same numbers, and new lads get what's available. But that all has no definitive bearing on who gets which squad number in the league. We could in theory swap every single player to a different number

How about letters of the alphabet, like some rugby union clubs used to do? O’Hare would look good in the famous J shirt for example.

Its when the likes of Liverpool and Man City have first team semi-regulars wearing numbers in the 70s and 80s that makes me sick and don't bother to change them.

I suppose there's not an awful lot that they can do when the U21s play in the Johnstones Paint or whatever it is now so have to dish numbers out to all and sundry above the main first team but for gods sake push the decent ones who stand a chance down the order a bit if they've played plenty of first team games. Guys like Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb, Connor Bradley, Jarell Quansah to name a few.

I have a very similar system but a bit more fluid after 1-11

GK : 1/13
RB : 2/12/22
LB : 3/15/ then one of 28/30/33
LCB : 5/ then one of 14/26/29/31
RCB : 6/ then one of 14/26/29/31
DMC : 4/18/25/32
MLC : 11/ then one of 17/24/28/30/33
MC : 8/20 then one of 24/28/30
MRC : 7/16 then one of 21/24/28/34
FW : 9/10/19/21/23/27

As you can see 21 could either be a mid or forward, 28 is a bit of a floater but generally on the left depending on the size of my squad and how many players I've got for each position. Like you 40+ are youngsters and listed players.

Apart from the 1-11, I don't even know why I've chosen it that way but you can be certain I always do!

In my head I'm screaming every time I see Foden with the no.47 on his back.

Excellent but I think you’ve got RCB and LCB the wrong way round. If RB is 2 then RCB is 4 not 6 surely.

Ever since Wilder first came, the numbers players have had on all their gear since the start of pre-season are the ones they've kept going into the season, so even though they don't have names on their shirts, in pre-season, they've usually ended up keeping the same number. This year was a bit different as nobody had numbers on their training gear for the first few days, and since so many players left it would make sense to totally re-do them, but since the first friendly most of them now do, so things like Brooks keeping 35 and Peck being 42 might stick (though hopefully not).

There's always a few who don't have a squad number on their training gear who just wear what's available in the right size, so Dozzell wearing Bogle's vacant 2 and Blacker and Boyes wearing 8 in games where Gus was missing (with Boyes then being 33 on Saturday when Gus was back). Not sure where the 46 came from for Burrows, we've not had anyone else wear that and he didn't have a number on his training gear when he was warming up on Saturday.

It doesn't always work like that though, when Coulibaly first arrived he had 24 all through pre-season, then was given 17 in the official list, so in conclusion they mean something, except when they don't.
