I'm rather more ruthless, I'm afraid guys ....... I'd like to see:

Retain / re-sign: Long, Brayford, Baptiste, Adams, Sharp. ( plus the kids )

Release / move on: all the rest of the senior first team squad.

Team for next season;

New GK

New CH Baptiste New CH

Brayford New CM New CM New CM New LW / LWB

Sharp New CF ( with pace, strength and scoring record )

subs: Long Adams Whiteman Reed New New

Serious clear-out of dead wood to enable a realistic challenge for top two places ........ not interested in play-offs with our history !!

UTB & FTP

Yeah -

" ... we need a Chris Porter who can run, jump-to-head-the-ball and prove difficult to get the ball off. Some one also who understands where Sharp/Adams/McN/DCLs is when the ball is pumped long into the box for the second ball ... "

Actually, that's not Chris Porter at all, is it?

:)

At 32, I'd still take Jon Stead on a freebie.

pommpey
not a bad shout stead

What I would like to see..

New 1st choice keeper
Back up keeper Long

Brayford
Baptiste
New CB
New LB
Back up CB
Back up full back

New RW
Whiteman
Basham
New CM
New LW

New Moblie CF
Done
Adams
Sharp

That would make up the core squad for me.

However the core will probbaly look like this..

Long
New back up keeper

New RB
Edgar
Mceverly (extension)
New CB
Back up CB / Full back

Flynn (extension)
Whiteman
Hammond :(
New CM
New LW
Woodford (can't give him away)

Sharp
New mobile CF (surely this time!!)
Done

I expect Brayford and Adams may be sold

Baptisite had a great game Saturday, as he slowly gets his fitness back. A 100% fit Baptiste would be good for any club in our league.

Yeah Baptiste is only one I would sign from ones we have on loan. Edgar is not dominant enough for me. He has played a fair few games and we have continued to ship games. If we could sign Baptiste and 2 new centre halves; with priority of size/dominance.

Central midfield is as key as the back though. We need 2 mobile players who can get box to box with one who can score goals / get ahead of strikers and another who is an intimidator and dirty so and so. Not a lot to ask for.

Sign 2 good centre back and 2 central midfieders and the rest of the side it would be a top 6 side at least. Long, Brayford, Sharp, Adams, Done and maybe at a push Basham.

i would still like a proper big lad up top. Adams can play wide but I am torn between keeping him and Sharp and lettitng them develop and getting a proper mobile target man to work with Billy. Matt Smith would be ideal. If we somehow signed him, the lad Burn and those 2 harriers in midfield you have a whole new prospect for next season. We would be a team with size and intimidation. Sadly thats what you need to get out of this division in most cases.

Precisely the reasons I'd like to see us in for McGeehan and Bostwick. McGeehan has 11 goals from midfield so far this season and Bostwick is one of them hard bastards we have been needing in the middle for quite a while now.

I've said it before on another thread but if it were up to me I would get rid of all out of contract/loans. They are part of the problem and not the solution. Never before have we had a chance to restructure in such a large scale.

However we will be able to tell what is realistically going to happen a few weeks after the season. If we haven't been active then expect the retained list to be large. Then we will have a definite idea how many signings we won't be making after the retained list .
One things for sure it will take more than 3 signings to turn this shower around in a season.

Im hoping probably like most on here that some winks and handshakes are already in the pipeline and that we dont reach august with a panic buy or two,im hoping for at least 3 permanents and maybe a season long loan for a starlet from one of the big boys ala conor coady

I’d settle for something like this. I’ve given examples of the type of player I’d like for the new recruits though they might not all be gettable.

GK

Long

New GK- Vigoroux (season loan to allow Ramsdale and Eastwood to mature for another year)

Def

Brayford

Baptiste

New CB- Nathan Cameron

Basham

Wallace

McGahey or Edgar (McGahey cheaper and more likely to be happy as back up)

Kelly

New LB- Nthle

Mid

CM- John Lundstram

2 X New winger - Hammil and Kent

Coutts

Hammond (let’s face it, this is happening regardless of his limitations)

Reed

Whiteman

Done

Att

Sharp

New CF- Matt Smith

Adams

DCL

De Girolamo

So our team would look something like

------------------------Long

Brayford—Baptiste—Cameron--Nthle

Kent--------Hammond—Lundstram—Hammil

-----------------Sharp-----Smith

Subs:

Vigoroux

Wallace

Basham

Coutts

Done

Adams

DCL

With Kelly, Reed, Whiteman, De Girolamo, Hallam, Wright, Banton, Semple, Adebowale, Brooks etc. as the further back up.

9 new signings including Baptiste and Hammond. 7 brand new faces. Out go the following 14 to make room for them

Howard (release)

Kenney (release)

McEveley (release)

Freeman (if we can find a taker)

Harris (release)

McFadzean (release)

JCR (release)

Scougall (if we can find a taker)

Wallace (release)

Flynn (release)

McNulty (if we can find a taker)

Edgar (loan ended)

Sammon (loan ended)

Woolford (if we can find a taker)

Could see the likes of Willis, Coustrain, Cockerline etc. possibly being released if they are out of contract too.
Can you honestly see us signing over half a dozen first team players
Dream on

Flynn and McGahey's contracts shouldn't be extended. Hammond, Baptiste and Edgar all need releasing too, I'd be very disappointed if any of those were to be kept on. I have a very strong feeling that voices coming from the club and manager as well as smokescreen results on the pitch will sway most of the fanbase into accepting more and more players contracts being extended. Then we're straight back to square one when everyone starts playing shite again first game of next season.

Out of interest, what is it you've seen/heard about Baptiste that would make you very disappointed if we signed him?

Potential 18 of this;

Long
Brayford McFadzean Turnbull Toffolo
Taylor Hyam Hourihane Harriott
O'Grady
Sharp

Ramsdale, Stephens, Basham, Reed, Done, Adams, Gregory

We should be looking to release almost everyone out of contract next season.

- Age: 30
- Just recovered from a broken leg.
- Already shown his proneness for injuries here.
- From what I have heard he hasn't been an outstanding performer, which doesn't exactly cover him in grace considering this is an appalling bunch of players.

With the need to trim the squad and get in some quality, we can't be taking chances on players, let alone old injury prone ones that fit nicely in to a vastly under performing squad.

Well you've heard wrong then.

You may have a point about him being injury prone though.

If Walsall stay in the division is love to see us go after Sawyers. Not entirely sure he'd fit in with Adkins preferred style but he's one of the better players in this division, despite his relatively poor showing at the weekend.

I believe that like a lot of managers, Adkins will look to sign players he has previously had at clubs he has managed. He has displayed this with his desire to sign Sharp and Hammond. He has signed Jonathan Forte for both Scunthorpe and Southampton and there's every chance he may sign him again for the Blades, I'm sorry to say..

I usually don't say specific new players unless we sign them or are very close to signing them but Il do it this time for a change
Goalkeeper: Long, Ramsdale (academy)
Defence: Brayford, Baptiste, Edgar, mcgahey, Ryan Tafazoli (was interested in him in the pre January loan window) mceverly, Graham Kelly, Done
Midfield: Basham, Hammond, reed, Whiteman, Flynn, George Moncur, Coutts, Woolford, David brooks
Strikers: Adams, DCL, Sharp, Marvin Sordell (a maybe but the type of striker I can see him buying)
Like recently he will use the 3-5-2 and the rest of the squad will be released or sold in summer
Total players 24

You just know it's going to be a shit summer where we retain most of the failiures and sign more squad fillers with the excuse of 'need time to gel'

Can you honestly see us signing over half a dozen first team players
Dream on

Sadly, no. But I think we probably need about 4 or 5 at least who are good enough to go straight into the first team if we're to mount a serious challenge.

Will be shit with Adkins and co in charge.
We have a manager who has got every aspect of football wrong, except the signing of Sharp and swapping Long for Howard.
And a 'seasoned' scout who could not think of one player let alone good one that SUFC could afford that Scunthorpe couldn't. Let alone find one in 10? months he's been here to the close of the transfer window.
NO CHANCE.

I see 2 or 3 good games from Flynn now the pressures off has suckered a number of people into thinking we should retain him...

Assuming that Adkins is still the manager next season, what are your predictions on what he will do in the Summer?
I.e. Who will he try to retain, who will he allow to leave, how many new players will he try to sign?

Based on the decisions and signings he has made in his first season, I predict the following:-

Squad for next season (Still under contract):-
Goalies:- None (0)
Defence:- Brayford, Basham, Freeman, K.Wallace, Done (5)
Midfield:- Coutts, Reed, Scougall, Woolford (4)
Strikers:- Sharp, Adams, DCL, McNulty, DDG (5)

New contracts:-
Goalies:- Long
Defence:- McEveley, McGahey (extension)
Midfield:- Flynn (extension), Whiteman
Strikers:- None

New signings:-
Goalies: - New GK
Defence:- Edgar, Baptiste
Midfield:- New MF, Hammond
Strikers:- New CF

Final Squad for next season
(not under contract in bold) 22 players
Goalies:- New GK, Long (2)
Defence:- Brayford, Basham, Edgar, Baptiste, McEveley, McGahey, K.Wallace, Done, New LWB (9)
Midfield:- New MF, Coutts, Hammond, Flynn, Reed, Whiteman, Woolford (7)
Strikers:- New CF, Sharp, Adams, DCL (4)

Will try to offload:- Freeman, Scougall, McNulty, DDG

Contract expired:- Howard, Willis, Collins, Harris, Kennedy, J.Wallace, Baxter, JCR, Cuvelier, McFadzean, Sammon (11)

Ok, so my original post was a prediction of what Adkins will do but it wasn't what I would do.

I would sign Long but bring in a better more experienced keeper as first choice.
I would sign McCeveley but not Edgar or McGahey. Again, I would hope that McEveley would offer decent cover rather than be a first choice.
I would sign Flynn but not Hammond and I would definitely try to offload both Coutts and Woolford.
Up front, I don't think DCL is ready for our first team, so I would be looking to send him out on loan.
I would like to see Diego given a chance before this season finishes, if he doesn't take it then look to offload him and recruit a young striker on loan from the Premier League instead.

I think it's crucial that Adkins decides on a preferred style of play and formation and signs players who will fit in with that.
If we're planning to play 4-4-2, then we suddenly need to sign at least 2 good wide players and 2 box-to-box midfielders.
3-5-2 is looking the best way to go at the moment as it suits more of our current players and those contracted for next season.
In which case, we definitely need a quality left wing back who can both attack and defend and better options in central midfield.
The new centre forward, needs to be a good all-rounder with pace, power and skill. Someone like a young Brian Deane would be nice.

My squad would be:-
Goalies:- New GK, Long (2)
Defence:- Brayford, Basham, New CB, Baptiste, McEveley, K.Wallace, Done, New LWB (8)
Midfield:- New ACMR, New HCM, New ACML, Flynn, Reed, Whiteman (7)
Strikers:- New CF, Sharp, Adams, Diego or New young loan CF (4)

I have to agree, the recruitment has been terrible. Adkins and club have thought it better to spend a significant amount of the budget on loan fees and wages for the likes of Hammond, Sammon, Woolford etc, rather than go after quality L1 performers such as Jimmy Ryan, Sam Morsy and Adam Hammill.

I see 2 or 3 good games from Flynn now the pressures off has suckered a number of people into thinking we should retain him...

It all depends what the terms would be with Flynn. A heavily appearance/performance based one year deal would be ideal. At the end of the day we will still need squad fillers, and his versatility is useful. The only issue then is his fitness. But hopefully we won't need him for more than 20 games or so.
