About parking etc also we exchanged our thoughts on our respective teams for this season.

He is no longer a season ticket holder (since he moved to Edgware, I think) but still goes to Vicarage Road occasionally and watches livestream matches. Confidence is low at Watford and my mate says he would be surprised if Watford win a game soon (their last win was April). He isn't happy with the constant change of managers. He doesn't think the current one should have come back to them as he believes in "never go back" because a "fresh face" would fire up the players more especially the ones that played under him. He said Craig Dawson is a poor signing and the defence is worse than last season's although he is glad that Cathcart has just returned. JanMaat is good at attacking but poor at defending (something for our left side to exploit!). He says Hoelbas is a poor left back. Capoue and Doucouré are good central midfielders and the recently returned Cleveley is reliable. Winger Sarr was bought for £23 and hasn't done much this season. Deulofeu and Pereyra can be either brilliant or terrible. Welbeck is trying to make an impression and my mate feels he will come good. He says Watford have been relying heavily on Deeney who wont be back till next month at the earliest.

I told him that our last away defeat is last January so I fear that this Saturday's match is our "banana skin"

Edgware? It’s virtually Watford. It’s like saying you’ve stopped going to the Lane because you’ve moved to Kimberworth.
 
Watford should feel that there is an opportunity to get things going here, if they don't think they can beat United at home they're pretty much in relegation mood already. I expect Wilder to be as well prepared as usual and see us winning 2-0.
 
Had a quick squint at a Watford forum, (soz Roy) and it seems most are fearing a beating. The extract below sums up their feelings nicely.


Sheffield United lost 1-0 against Liverpool and their manager was digging out their players after the game and furious.

We lost 8-0 against Man City and the club showed more or less total apathy afterwards.

It’s an interesting one because it’s a game that many expect us to win. It’s a completely different kind of pressure. It’s also a must win for Watford. If they’re not up for it, they’ve got serious problems. If they are up for it, we’ve got problems because although their form is poor, they were a very good side last season and capable of beating any team outside the top two at their place.

We absolutely have to match the intensity of the Liverpool performance.
 
Can't underestimate them. They finished eleventh last year, bad end to the season or not. Every team at this level has players that on their day can hurt you. Even with the start they've had I find it hard to believe they're as bad as those results.

Hopefully I'm wrong and they'll roll over for us. A point away is never terrible but this has to be us looking to make our mark with a clear win. A defeat would be the first result to make me worry.

Should've refreshed the page before posting pretty much the same thing. It's pressure, but I much prefer being the favourite in a contest.

I moved to kimberworth (thanks to an expensive divorce) and getting to the lane has never been easier thanks to SYPTE although I doubt think the X78 goes to vicarage road 😉

His advice on parking was difficult as the one he advised has a £10 parking fee so I wont be using it. He catches the bus to Vicarage Road from Edgware but is not going to this Saturday's match. Will ask for advice from my sister's sister in law who used to live in Bushey.
 
I'll use the Northampton game in the fourth division as an example (which several of us were talking about a week or two ago); when we turned out to win the game we went 6-0 up at that point the players relaxed, end result 7-3. There are fine lines between victory and defeat and also between seeing a game out and relaxing.
 



I worked with a big Watford fan in the late 80’s. His brother was in the same school year as George Michael in Bushey, Watford.
Watford were seen as a little team then, even though they were in the top flight.
He was humble and amazed that they were playing in the top division, they were like a Wigan Athletic of the day.

I even went to the odd away game to see Watford, saw them play at Port Vale in the FA Cup.
Standing with the Watford fans was a real culture shock.

They had quite a lot wearing scarves and colours, where as our lot in the late 80’s hardly wore colours at away games.
There was quite a few women and children, where as our our away crowds seemed to be 90% Male.
Also no swearing in the Watford end, where as our lot in the 80’s were a bit rough and angry swearing all the time.

The Watford chants used to be “come on you Golden Boys”
And whenever they had a corner they’d chant “oh it’s a corner..oh it’s a corner”

Yes, they were decent last season...noticed they had most of the game at Wolves...more possession,more shots despite losing...can't take them lightly,but another chance of a result.
 
This would usually be the classic Blades game where we give the opposition the long awaited win.

However this isn't a classic Blades team.

Big game for both though.
 
My strongest memory of Watford is from about 2005 when a kid sat a couple of rows in front of me did the worst wanker gesture I've ever seen, before or since.

It was a limp index finger and thumb effort with the other fingers splayed out like an OK gesture. Then it hardly moved at all. It was more a vibration than a stroke.

Really terrible. And he was sat with his dad.

That and they have a fucking moose as their badge when they're nicknamed the Hornets.

Watford's kit has changed considerably over the course of the club's history. The club's kit featured various combinations of red, green and yellow stripes, before a new colour scheme of black and white was adopted for the 1909–10 season. These colours were retained until the 1920s, when the club introduced an all-blue shirt. After a change of colours to gold shirts and black shorts for 1959–60, the team's nickname was changed to The Hornets, after a popular vote via the supporters club. These colours remained until 1976, when Watford's kits started featuring red, and the gold was changed to yellow. That colour scheme has continued into the 21st century.

Watford's initial nickname was The Brewers, in reference to the Benskins Brewery, which owned the freehold of Vicarage Road. This nickname did not prove particularly popular, and upon the adoption of a blue-and-white colour scheme in the 1920s, the club became predominantly known as The Blues. When Watford changed kit colours in 1959, supporters chose The Hornets as the team's new nickname, and the club later introduced a crest depicting a hornet. In 1974 the design was changed to depict Harry the Hornet, the club's mascot. The club's nickname remains, but in 1978 the hornet crest was replaced by a depiction of a hart – a male red fallow deer– on a yellow and black background. A hart represents the town's location in the county of Hertfordshire. Until Barnet[c] and, later, Stevenage joined the Football League, Watford were Hertfordshire's only league club. Other nicknames have since been adopted, including The Golden Boys, Yellow Army and The 'Orns.
