Speed: The Next Gaffer?

I think the role is fine in theory for big clubs, its just that in practice it doesn't seem to have worked in British football so far.

You're right about Notts County, they definitely wouldn't have gone if it weren't for Sven. Didn't work out so well for Campbell though..

But then football's a funny old game isn't it? Robson was hailed as being able to bring quality players into the club due to his reputation, which it seemed he did (eg. Beattie, Naysmith) despite the fact we all knew he was a complete tit :D, and it baffled me that players would want to play for him.

Agree about Speed, it's nice to have someone at the club who we know is well respected throughout the football community and can improve the profile of our (often disparanged) club.

Cheap as chips Director of Football ? Yer havin a laff ! Its took years to get shut of our terry .....No no no.
Speed as gaffer ? Not reight now.

.

I can never understand why, after we've shelled out £2MILLION per year in wages, people still think it took Robson's name to get Beattie here. He was all but finished and was given a contract nobody else would have dreamed of offering. Same with Naysmith, Ehiogu and Speed. The only result, an enormously unaffordable wagebill and a bang average team.

Let's learn to earn our way, not buy it.

This interview with Beattie from the Telegraph might go some way to explaining why people think Beattie signed because of Robson.

Basically, Beattie says he signed because of Robson.

I'm sure the fat contract helped, but I think people reckon Beattie signed because of Robson because Beattie said so.

Just a theory. I must be wrong though, because you say so.
Telegraph online said:
"I just wanted to play for somebody who wanted me," said the lean-looking striker..."

""I know you don't want to drop out of the Premier League," Robson began, "but sometimes in life you have to take a step back to take three forward. I'm going to structure the team around you. I play with two wingers and get crosses in." "Happy days!" replied the archetypal No 9.

"For somebody like Bryan Robson to be sat in my house, saying those things to me, and talking to my mum and dad, was great. His name carries so much weight.......

Here is something to debate. I'm starting to become suspicious that the managerial reigns might be handed over shortly. Its funny that Gary Speed has been given a lot more responsibility recently; handling interviews and media questions - not to mention his increasing presence on the touchline in camparison to KB.

Sam Ellis, who is the Assistant Manager I might add - has been as quiet as the Manager in recent weeks.....I just wonder.....

My prediction is Gary Speed to take over as manager at the end of the season with Kevin moving upstairs in a Director of Football Role. Would make sense - I could see Blackwell in such a role and he seems to become increasingly fed up with the being the main man and handling the pressure that comes with it. By moving into DOF role he would most likely increase his salary and take less grief.

Mr McCabe has been wanting to appoint a Director of Football for some time as well, it would be easy enough to appoint from within. Just a vibe i'm getting - what does everyone else think?.....

I wouldn't be displeased with Speed taking over as manager and i had noticed his more prominent media role lately.

but I can't see KB as DOF and i'm not sure that we need one anyway.

need one... or does one fit... or is there no longer a need....

how does the new model of football management, from the business side of things, that we are using and developing world wide change the need for a DOF.
surely the model itself should draw players in in intrigue and career potential... so many young players, who don't make it in the British game, need time to go out to other clubs to get practice and get experience, and older players can do with a semi pension plan...
now i think about it, the model we are implicating should do the job of a DOF, if the role of a DOF is whats being discussed above...

Some interesting points being made here but I think as usual some people are flying off the handle a bit. I merely pointed out that Kevin McCabe has wanted to appoint a DOF for some time which is a fact.

It also appears that Speed is being groomed for the manager's role (all the clues are there). I could well be completely wide of the mark but it would seem pointless him taking up all this responsibility if they didnt have him in mind for a promotion to something.

I understand some people dislike KB immensely (I actually like the man - just my opinion), but just because some of you either can't see him as a DOF or don't want him there at all, doesnt mean he wont move into the role. Lets face it - its not unlike our club to do things on the cheap and appointing a DOF from within would be typical of us.

If Speed is indeed being groomed for manager (im only saying if), why would KB go along with it if he wasn't being touted for a higher role. Its all speculation I know.....but I reckon its a fair shout.

More ridiculous things have happened :D

As someone posted earlier about the DOF, I think that article is just Beatie saying something other than "I came for the money" which in my mind he did, I dont think it had owt to do with Nobson

I remember posting exactly the same thing about Stuart McCall on BU about 4 years ago !

McCabe (or maybe Our Turry) weren't interested when it came to the crunch and I somehow don't think McCabe would go for Speed whilever he's holding the reigns.

The decision to overlook McCall looks a decent one now (aside from the Robbo debacle). He's admitted - with rare honesty - to being a learner at Bradford, and it's only cos they love him that he's still there.

Top chap, and hopefully will become a top manager.

It's difficult to say with any confidence that because he's struggled with a 3rd division squad and no money that he would have struggled with us.

I agree that it would have been the wrong time for him to take over in 2007 but thinking back, it was around 04/05 that I first started to think he was being groomed to take over from Warnock. Had we not been promoted, he may well have been given a chance around that time.

I'm not sure why you've become such an arse with me SV, but whatever.

Sol Campbell signed for Notts County because "they're the oldest football club in the world". No really. He said it himself, so it's clearly true.

They say there's one born every minute, and THAT clearly is true.

I wasn't intending being an arse. I just wanted to point out that Beattie said he signed because of Robson. Not why, because it was the big fuck-off wodge of cash, but what Beattie actually said.

But Beattie wasn't overpaid. He'd have got the same elsewhere. I'd guess he took a pay cut to join us from Everton.
