Southampton

Martin Samuel has written a whole article about Southampton on the Times website. He also manages to mention United, at least directly.

I know Ipswich spent 100m+ but did Leicester and Southampton spend as much?

We clearly were shite but I bet our transfer fees and wages weren't more.

Opta got you sorted for all that stuff...although I believe it's only in the Premier League era:

So we lose one of our unwanted records here as Southampton take the record outright with Seven Games Remaining!

What date in 20/21 would we have been relegated had the season not started a month or so late due to Covid delaying the end of the previous season?

They've definitely not had the rubbish thrown at them like we did, we were stinking the league out but we finished on more points than Southampton and wasn't relegated this early but not heard the same said about them
I imagine the Southampton fans are sick of reading how shit they are and how bad they’ve been much like we were.

We were acutely aware of all comments made about us because we read them all. It probably wasn’t as bad if you were outside of Sheffield. No one here knows that we were really shit last season, they hardly even know we exist.

Leicester were crippled by FFP. They bought Oliver Schipp from Spurs for £20m and he can't make the team.

We were set up to fail last season. The most pointless (almost literally) season in living memory.

On the pitch perhaps - but there is a certain value in going up - spending nothing, and coming down with debts cleared etc.

As the three teams up there this year have shown - you can throw 100m at it and still be relegated comfortably

Clearly we don`t want this to happen again - but as a one season experiment it put the club on a sound footing.

Probably early to mid-April. This season it would be 12th-14th of April.

We were looking at the PL table the other night & thinking if we went up ( even with £100M+ investment) like Ipswich have had , who would actually gets points against ..and if I’m honest we were struggling !
You offer the argument of 2019 promotion side did ..but that side was a hell of a lot better than our current side and the PL is a lot stronger now in terms in terms of quality of squads & spread of talent .. I think the game changer was the change of rule over more subs aloud in a game this massively benefited the established sides .. sadly I think it’d be quick return and hopefully not as embarrassing a season as last time ..but I wouldn’t be confident ..it’s a sad indictment on how money has ruined the modern game ⚔️

Wednesday in deeper trouble - Rohl favourite by a long way.

We were relegated after 32 matches in 2020/21 (lockdown season) and 35 matches in 2023/24.

The former was a record until Southampton surpassed it at the weekend.
Let’s face it, there’s still hope yet for Danny Mills!

This could be the worst take of all time.

Absolutely dripping with arrogance and condescension

There you go gents, just pass the ball around aimlessly and you’re considered ‘a better manager than Southampton’

Modern day premier league centric journalism for you.
