Sooooo slow....

I agree with the OP. No, definitely not the end of the world, but we didn't do ourselves justice against a good side who were there for the taking in those first 15 mins.

We moved the ball quickly and intelligently.

Then the moment they got a foothold in the game we retreated.

That's not like us.

We move on and I'll loose no sleep over this result.

As the belief builds so will the performances.

Of that I have no doubt.

So upon reading your post you don't agree with the OP?

First 15 minutes I thought we looked decent tbf, what tonight did show however is we are lacking pace and someone to run in behind, Coutts and Fleck are as good as anyone on the ball but they need options in front of them that enable them to play forward otherwise there only option is to go sideways or backwards, As much as we may love him Billy just ain't gunna cut it at this level sub maybe but not from the off we need pace!!!!
He had 7 touches in the first half though. Clarke only had 16.

Clarke ran his socks off again and was our only outlet , Billy did nothing. No wonder he was subbed , the game passed him by. If CW is loyal but not sentimental , he will seek improvement from Billy and if none comes , we'll be looking for a new captain.

We are just so slow in both thought and body. Rushed passes when no one near or passing backwards constantly. We seem to think we need a triangle of tippy tap round every opposition player to get a goal. Everything either telegraphed or done at a snails pace. Passing backwards to make space even though no one is chasing or being pulled out of position through doing it.

Coutts...not one forward pass. Enda and freeman...no attempt to beat a man. Basham...slow to react, busy pushing instead and heads it directly upwards for the goal. Duffy...only one with any get up and go. So glad, it's 4am in oz and I'm straight to bed.
Major overreaction. Coutts was the tidiest most composed player for us, basham gave 110% as he does week in week out, and Duffy came on with 20 minutes to go, he should have a bit of get up and go about him. Freeman didn't look right after the nasty whack he got 1st half, and Stevens had a solid game in his 1st crack at this level,up against an international fullback, and a team that have spent close to 50 million quid. Who in the end had to rely on a piss poor official to get all 3 points. If you think we are going to outplay teams every week in this league your going to be very disappointed.

Billy will score in this league, but he will not score week in week out and this is why we need another striker.

I think Duffy made a huge difference. He came on and buzzed around, made himself available and tried to get us going forward. Didn't always work, but he seemed to gel the other players together.

I really don't think he's good enough for this division though, game in, game out. Neither is Carruthers. Or Brooks. We need to sign someone in that position.
duffy? u sure? he gave the ball away most of the time he tried a pass.

too many fannies in this world crying like kids cos we lost a game. god help you if we ever get in the prem and getting smashed week in week out

He did give the ball away, but he allowed us to keep the ball and build. He buzzed around the pitch making himself available, playing short give and goes and bringing other players into the game. Yes, he was rusty, and yes he gave the ball away too much, but he allowed us to actually play our game.

so he put himself about a bit but gave the ball away too much. sounds counter productive to me

Disappointing performance and a lack of pace has been a glaring failing for a long while now.
A lot of the passing was negative or relatively aimless and it was surprising to see United lacking in drive and belief for much of the game, after a positive start.
We'll see how the next few games go but it maybe a lack of investment over the summer in a bit more quality - particularly up front - is going to cost us.

Agreed, by no means perfect, but we looked better with him on for me. It meant we played the ball on the ground more as well.

All the defence could do after their goal was hoof as the only other option was to try and make some space and we lost the ball several times trying to do that. We needed a midfielder to drop and do that, but Coutts only wanted to drop, pass it, and then look like he'd done his job.

David Silva does it for City when they're struggling. He drops deep and just plays little passes, allowing them to bring it out of defence.

Obviously it's a lot less effective when our David Silva is Mark Duffy!
