Yes I remember that match now, it was a Tuesday night. Still don't remember the applause for him but I could've turned up a few minutes late for all I know!

From memory, Gary Sinclair read through the teams and then said something like "And it would be remiss of us not to say welcome back to Bramall Lane to Nigel Clough". He then received a generous round of applause which he, almost aggressively, reciprocated.

Agree. He had a lot less resources than any manager since. He turned Bob Booker from a past it donkey into Lothar fckin Mattheus as well.

Crap. Absolute crap. Bassett was the best manager in my lifetime, even lent the club money for transfers. Wilder is all about Wilder. Warnock all about Warnock. Bassett did his job, and for the most part brilliantly with no financial support.

Maybe the fact he didn’t present himself as mr 100% blade helped.

Nowt but heartfelt applause from me, in appreciation for our greatest manager in my lifetime. We achieved things we could never have dreamed of, before he and Knilly came along. Perspective.

Leaving by the front door would have meant admitting the job was beyond him and walking, instead he effectively left us without a manager whilst waiting for a pay off.

I dont know the details any more than most, but I guess if a manager walks they usually forgo their payoff.
The only manager I ever remember admitting the job was beyond him was Micky Adams.

For me I am not going to chant his name or celebrate him being there a few claps if needed and done. At the end of the day he is there to do a job and so are we. Yes he got us out of League 1 but that showed how poor previous management really was, with the Championship promotion the brand of football caught out teams and although the gap has definitely increased to the Premiership, initially he managed to get away with catching out teams, it would have been interesting to see where we would have finished in a non covid world but we know he was poor in the transfer market. He is a good championship manager but not an international dealing manager which ultimately you need to find those gems abroad like Norwich, Southampton and a few others do that either get them up or keep them up.

United and Boro are direct rivals for promotion and nothing else matters but beating him

Not denying the restrictions he worked under. But my point still remains, the financial gulf these days compared to 30+ years ago.

Could all turn our backs? After what he did I don't think he should get away with just being ignored. Doesn't feel enough.

He needs to know how much we all hate him and that he's not a blade or one of our own. Never was never will be. Fake money to throw at him would also be a great way of showing him we know he robbed £4m off us that he definitely didn't earn.

Tbh I'd be amazed if he shows up. How can he really after what he did? Just hope he can sleep at night on his pillow made of our money.
