On a busy Monday as normal i like to have a quick look around various websites for rumours/ transfer news and general news in the world of football. Obviously this is heavily based on the red and white wizards. Now today i came across this article on the Sheffield star website (always a great source of blades news:rolleyes:) which seems to suggest that there might not be as many changes at BDTBL as we maybe thought.

Now surely we can not survive without quite a few of the big earners being shipped out and being replaced with the likes of lecs and a few juniors. I am some what surprised that we haven't released a list of players that are being released together with a bit more news on the likes of monty and ched moving on. We seem to be quite happy to bring in players but no one seems to be leaving, unless some deals have been done already that we don't know about.

All it illustrates is that our high earners (and subsequently the club) are in limbo.

We cant make many moves because too much money is being absorbed by currently contracted players.

We cant release anyone because we dont know if or when any of the high earners will be moving on. We therefore have no idea of numbers still.

Its still a bit of a mess but as far as DW is concerned, its just what he's been left to work with and he'll have a look at everyone.

Nobody ever listens, but Admin is the only route out the doo doo.

Maybe they are all so cushy on the contracts they are on they pledge loyalty as they know they could not get the same anywhere else.
The position that no one wants them because they are crap probably doesn't come into it.

You call it limbo, I'd call it turmoil!

Add the new manager (who many don't want at our club), the must do integration of the kids into the squad (because it's cheap to do so) add the dark depths of playing our "football" in the 3rd division and I associate it with being akin to a recipe for disaster

But hey, we're all Blades aren't we? :)

Or alternatively the higher paid players will destroy this league making them all rather attractive to teams in the Championship in January. Clearly we've put a price higher on these players than the open market would suggest so they're not moving as they're too expensive.

Stick to watching the hockey mate.

Here here Dave. But I have been banging on about it for weeks. Now around 17 days to Malta and we have signed one player. Noone has been released and we still have Evans, Monty, Quinn, Cresswell, Henderson and Simmonsen (and possibly Yeates and Bogdanovic) on unsustainable salaries. I am so underwhelmed by the lack of activity, that I cannot be angry or shocked. I just feel apathetic and am resigned to another shite season.

None of the salaries are unsustainable whilst the man often accused of bleeding us dry is willing to foot the bill if needed.

Any of the high earners remaining at the start of the season should have the attitude that they owe it to use to get us out of the league upwards.

As Vancouver also alludes to, whatever their failings or recent form, higher paid players are generally higher paid for a reason.

The salaries are unsustainable. The league rules state that (though they come into place next summer) and anyone can see that we cannot afford to be shelling out more than 10k a week for average players.

The high earners are proven failures. It is just kidding yourself if you think these apathetic carthorses are going to suddenly be 'up for it' and fire us up the league.

You are right about there being a reason for them getting paid a lot. Horrendously bad management, couple with short sighted decisions and general bafoonery!

My key point being, that if the often abused man is willing to foot the bill, then we can afford it, for as long as he's willing to do that.

We most certainly need to drop the wage bill and rebuild long term, but that doesn't mean we can't have a season or two with someone financing the odd top earner.

The league rules aren't an issue at the moment.

The high earners you mentioned have a past regularly above the level we are now at. In most cases, it will be the lowest they've ever played. They are of course currently here on merit, having helped relegate us.

I never said anywhere that I expected them to be nailed on to fire us up the league, that doesn't totally negate their past and the level to which they have played throughout their career.

Do you honestly think they've suddenly just had money stupidly thrown at them due to failure? or do you think perhaps it's the balance of regular higher league performances?

Well they were paid decently, and took us down on merit, so something went wrong somewhere (mix up some Robson and Robinson, add generous quantities of Birch and a pinch of Blackwell) the football decsions over the last 3 years got us here, and our players are undoubtedly overpaid for their ability level.

Which is essentially the crux of the opening post. We aren't seeing much movement out, because football is under pressure in general and the championship teams who we imagined would be looking at the likes of Evans, Hendo, Monty and Quinn are not biting because they are on too much for the level of their ability.

In fairness there is little previous evidence that our current crop of players would either do well or do poorly in the third division.

The only thing we can be undoubtedly sure of is that they were far too poor collectively to stay in the Championship.

Fact is, this is our level now. Bouncing back at the first attempt would be a sign of improvement I think.

I think we can blame Adams for a lot.

The record of more or less the same players under Speed was as follows:

P18 W6 D3 L9 pts 21.

Not brilliant by any means but, extrapolated over a season, enough for a lower mid table finish and comfortable survival.

It was only under Adams that a mediocre underperforming team turned into relegation certs.

As poor as Adams record was I think its difficult to compare. They had more or less the same squad but the team was different if you look at it.

Speed had Bartley, Britton, Reid and even Morgs for a spell. Adams had Collins, Lowry, Doyle and Bent.

I dont have a lot of sympathy for Adams though because that was largely his own doing.

Not when he first came he didn't...

Funnily enough most of these players contracts are up next summer too.

No he decided to waste a good couple of million on them.

Not when he first came he didn't...

True, that's why I have no sympathy :)

Like I said that was mostly his doing but I think his failings were in the players he let go and brought in.

I think most Blades would concede it was the biggest factor in our poor form under him and would explain why his record is crap even next to Speed.

I agree with that. I blame Adams for us getting relegated last year. I stated many times that his disasterous record took us to the third tier. he took us from certain safety, flirting with relegatiion at best to the rock bottom of the league within a matter of weeks. He is the worst manager in the history of SUFC. Say's it all.

You can add Ward to that list too. But here is the where is makes Adams look more of a mug. He fell out with Ward (and later Yeates) and sold Britton. He also allowed Bartley to go. He then replaced them with absolute tosh. On long contracts. Unlike Speed, Adams had a transfer window and he royally ballsed it up. A big plau to Speed though was Reid. He looked a class apart at Championship level and was the difference in a few games.

All facts are they Olle?

Could have put together a half decent team with everyone fit under Speed.

A midfield of Williamson, Britton and Reid would have been something to behold in a 433.

with a bit of organisation though that money could be spent on new players though
adams took over when we were 5th from bottom with a small cushion to the relegation zone. the stats don't lie i'm afraid
