Can’t say I’ve watched that much of us recently, been busy and the timings of games (late Saturday or Sunday games) just doesn’t work for me. Anyway, that’s a different gripe.
Watched the game today though and thought whilst we started with energy, we allowed West Ham to dictate the pace of play. Nothing too unfamiliar with that, but there didn't seem to be the same level of organisation and "front foot" approach when we didn't have the ball.
West Ham pressed us, fair enough, but i didn't think we retained the ball well enough when we got it.
Big issue was the long ball, in the past we've mixed short passes with direct passes and its unleashed the wing backs as well as the Overlapping Centre Halves which we've become famous for. That appears to have gone, both because it has been closed down on the right and we can't do it the same on the left.
Their goal was the result of an aimless long punt. McG and McB were on the other side, but Rammers put it straight into our left of centre and it came straight back. Rammers (and Hendo last season) seem to be under instruction to launch the ball early to counter. It doesn't seem to be very effective at all.
The chances we created today came from good interplay, opening West Ham up and getting in behind. We have a midfield (and Wing Backs) that can play football and would give West Ham a real game if we'd played through the middle. The balance isn't there.
Todays game was one of the most frustrating games i've seen under Wilder, the game was crying out for the ball to stay on the deck and yet we punted too much because McB wins headers... We need to get back to what made us successful - energy, intensity and playing the ball incisively over 5 yards or 40 yards.
Anyway, won't get to watch next weeks game properly as i'll probably be pissed
