Isn't it a rhetorical question?:loopy:

Well no, because there is an answer.

Bugger all or stop going.

It just depends what camp you're in :)

Linz, I think we're at cross purposes in terms of the question

I was responding frivolously to super pig and SESKU :)

firstly i'd like to point out that i'm not camp :p

seriously though,

i will still renew, i'll still go away when i can....to coin a phrase 'same owd'

i've done it for the last 30 odd years so i can't see much changing and to be honest i don't really want it too

the only different thing these days is that you can moan via a keyboard aswell as in the pub

if your a blade your a blade....end of :)

There's a third option.

I accept (both logically and emotionally) that my ability to influence the Blades in both football and commerce are next to zero.

I accept that in reality KB knows more about football and KMc knows more about commerce than I will ever do.

I accept that the reality of the Blades experience for me is meeting with HH and others on a match day, having a few pints and some banter (mostly about the club and the game) and ideally ending with a curry in the evening.

I accept that whilst the Blades are an important part of my life there are other parts too - which means I need to keep all this is a wider perspective.

The essence of this arguement is about expectation - expectation about what the Blades "should" be and expectation about how much we fans "should" influence what happens at our club.

Options 1 (get active and try to lobby the club to change it's ways) and Option 2 (walk away) both pre-suppose degrees of anger and frustration that have reached points that people feel the need to alter their actions or even lives.

Option 3 is quite simple - Realise that some battles aren't worth fighting - either because the chances are so high that the fight will be futile (what chance of us influencing transfers or tactics etc?), or because there are more important battles to be fought elsewhere in life (will I have a job in April?). Change your expectations of your importance to/role within the Blades, accept the reality and live with it

This doesn't mean that the Blades mean any less to me than to others (ST holder for many years, was there when TC played - yadda yadda) but does mean that once I let go of the feeling that it's my "duty" to do something, then match days become less intensely personal and therefore more enjoyable - and enjoyment is one of the reasons I turn up each game.

Think Toaism talks about some of this stuff - but I learnt it as hard political reality whilst working on the Rainbow Warrior.

Simples - just a different view of the world

I try not to take it all too seriously. I used to. It used to be painful to watch us concede a goal, and defeat was terrible. This was combined with me not getting to too many matches a season due to work, so every match was a special occasion. They aren't now. Maybe if we were winning lots in the Premier League they might be, but they might not. I now am in the position of having a season ticket. i don't go to many away matches due to several reasons - having a family and a mortgage for starters. It really doesn't bother me now like it used to.

What I would miss is the stuff that goes with it - the mates and the banter. I try to enjoy it, and can enjoy the fun that goes with a match even if the match itself is dire.

Makes sense to me!

:)

>Change your expectations of your importance to/role within the Blades, accept the reality and live with it
Is that the same as 'don't give a shit'?

If you want it to be then I suppose it could be. That's up to you.

For me it just means that I realise that no-one who matters would ever be interested in my opinions on team selection, tactics, finances etc - and that at the end of the day, it ain't my problem. Yes I get pissed off with poor performances and love it when things go our way - but I've come to realise the limits of what I can influence, and I don't waste my time, effort and emotions on things beyond that scope.

The result of which means that I apparently enjoy matches more than many on here - I don't take every loss or dodgey decision personally - I seem to find it easier to cheers the lads on than many (makes me a clapper I guess) - and the bad days don't hurt as much (though Wigan and Burnley stand out as particularly painful)

The Blades mean as much to me as to many - it's just that I've learned how to handle my addiction! ;)

I kind of feel like that these days. I don't support United because they win loads of stuff, the attachment to them comes from lots of emotional reasons to do with my family and where I grew up. As such the important thing about United is the clubs itself and what it stands for for me, not whether they are phenomenally successfully.

As a wise man once said about socialism, "the movement is everything, the goal is nothing".

Fuck 'em. Unless they personally drive me to the match, pay for my beer and pie, and then drive me home again I will be as dispassionate about the players as they are about me. They are only here for a while anyway. We're here for life, and it is our club. We own the stripes. They only wear them.
