@Maddog1889 attacking midfielder I presume who could also play up top, not another CF?

David Madden ‏@Maddog1889 2m2 minutes ago
@Mikeruk1 yep.

The O'shea rumour still lingering

Really hope it's not O'Shea. That would be very underwhelming. No potential, no resale value and no chance of improving our first team.

I suppose it would still be a good transfer window though. But we're not wrong to expect better than Hanson and O'Shea as our attacking signings given the position we're in.

What worries me is the lack of bucks from McCabe and the Prince, surely now is the time for spending for the future given we are top of the league. Taking L1 players into the championship is not a statement of intent.

I'll tell you what, if we don't get promoted then the board will thoroughly deserve all the stick they get.

We know what it's like. Opportunities don't come along every day for us. We won't get a better one than this. If we fuck this season up there's every chance next season will be harder and then before you know it we're into our 8th season in L1.

How can we be so complacent when we've failed so many times before? How is it not worth spending money we'll more than make back in revenue in the Championship? I'd understand comments that it's not that simple if we had a different manager in charge but if we give this one a bit to spend he will not fuck up.

All this pre-emptive slagging of the board. How do you know that Wilder hasn't been given exactly what he has asked for? Fact is, you don't. The fact that you want different players brought in, in no way equates to Wuilder not being backed

Everything I've seen suggests no significant money will be spent, including the signing of Hanson. Given the position we're in I don't think Wilder would insist on being limited to small transfer fees, and he's earned the right to be allowed to spend more. I've not said he hasn't been backed - he has to some extent. I'm suggesting that he hasn't been/won't be backed as much as he should be. And it could cost us.

I couldn't give a shit about a statement of intent for the championship. We need players who can get us out of L1 and if we go up CW can then look at the squad again.
we have tried potentially Championship players in L1 before and it has failed

We needed a Hansen type yesterday and we will certainly need one against Bolton and in othe home as especially as trams sit back.
Sometimes we need to go more direct and Hansen will give us that option.

O'Shea very much a target.

Player interested, but clubs miles apart on valuation.

Could I direct you to the Blades Accounts thread? We're in the 3rd tier and losing millions a year. Yes we have been unambitious in the past and it's cost us, but that doesn't and shouldn't mean we go even further beyond our means.

Well I don't see how that is borne out by the facts as you or I know them. We know he has signed. Curruthers from mk who were in the. Championship last year, we know fee was paid and given he was out of contract in the summer strongly suggests he would have secured a decent wage. McCall says they had an enquiry from The championship for Hanson
. Again suggests his wages will not be cheap. Compare our squad with any in this division and possibly only Bolton have higher wage bill. I do know wilder wouldn't sign someone for the sake of it if he wasn't sure they were what he wanted or to just pad out the squad numbers.

If we want to lose less money then we should try getting to the Championship. Where we'd also be a more attractive proposition for investment.

Totally agree we are panicking too early wilder and knill will sort it utb

What is backing?
Are you saying a league 1 club should be spending 5 million?

Hanson will be a mega wages for league 1 and is exactly the type of player we need.
But I suppose salaries don't count as expenditure?

It seems you are prepared to risk the future of the club?
Imagine if we spent 5 million then still fail to gain promotion.
We've shown massive ambition last season by paying mega wages for Hammond.
We showed mega ambition paying over 1 million for a full back.
We showed megs ambition paying a striker £10K a week wages, unheard of in league 1.
The huge investment failed and maybe McCabe needs to understand that spending big money doesn't gaurantee success.

If we spent big and failed then we would then need to sell 2 or 3 players and pay off some contracts.
Next season in league 1 we'd not be able to compete, crowds would go down
The fans would have short term memories and refuse to accept we'd spent 5 million over budget the previous season. In fact they'd probably be accused of be stupid to risk everything on promotion.

Agree we need to gamble, but it shoud be educated gambles not reckless gambles.

You are massively defeatist, only consider the worst case scenario and even exaggerate that.

Risk the future of the club! What, by spending an extra £1m or so?

As I said in another post, if you're managed correctly, when you spend money you gain an asset therefore the money is redeemable. Do you think Wilder would lead us up shit creek like Clough and Adkins did? Do you think he'd spend good money on a player with no resale value and pay them wages far in excess of what anyone else would? Not a chance. It wouldn't be dead money, we'd be able to get it back if we had to.

Spending money doesn't have to represent the sort of risk United have stupidly made it in the last few years by paying big wages for old shit players.

Running a football club is easy when it's soneone else's money on the line and theories carry no risk whatsoever.

Any evidence that Wilder isn't being backed ? Defeatist talk if not surely? whilst having a go at the board does get some"upbeat" it seems.

Wait until Duffy goes (c Pommpey).....

Without anyone knowing details of fees, wages, length of contract etc, what's Hansens worth going to be in say two or three years? Assuming of course it's actually Wilder that ones him and he's not being foisted on him by McCabe.

..that wage bill won't come down on it's own....

It might be similar to what we're paying now as long as he's well under contract.

But he's not one to use to try and make this point, because he's a relatively cheap signing (between 150-200k reported and likely).

And his wages. Signing on fee?

So only spending money on some assets is the money redeemable. Not all assets. Which is what you implied with "an asset".

And his wages. Signing on fee?

Well, we don't know, because they not disclosed, I'm guessing they are within the new remit of reducing the wage bill...do you know?

People are making the simple assumption that Hanson's wages will be less than a better striker's, who would cost more money and who may ( or may not) have a far greater resale value ( if we don't go up) and be good enough to play in the Championship ( if we do get there)

..and are a bit disappointed in this approach, given the club's position in the league and the opportunity present.

It really is that simple but you seem to get your knickers in a twist about this and any criticism of the board.

Why?

I suppose it depends how quickly you can sell them. I was talking in terms of spending decent money, in which case it will be redeemable if you do things correctly.

Any signing on fee is unlikely to increase the initial outlay massively, and the wages you assume will fit within our structure.

We'll probably be able to get our money back for O'Shea and maybe even Hanson but the potential for an increase in value and that's disappointing if they're two out of our three permanent signings.

We'd probably lose less money in the long run by spending more now on players whose value will hold or likely increase.

The amount of money we will make if we jump a league will dwarf the figures we spend on Hanson and O'Shea.

For the last few seasons we've been screaming out for players who know this fucking division, instead of overpaid Premier League players on their last legs.

We got a bargain (IMO) in Carruthers who will have great resale value. We're now bringing in two players who are willing to mix it up and get us out of this godforesaken shithole we've been in for what feels like decades.

Have some faith that Wilder knows what he's doing.
