Daniel Joseph "Don" Givens (born 9 August 1949 in Limerick, Republic of Ireland) . His time at Sheffield United will forever be remembered for the time he missed a last minute penalty in the last match of the 1980–81 season against Walsall at Bramall Lane in the old third division. If he had scored, The Saddlers would have been relegated, instead it was Sheffield United who were consigned to the 4th division for the first (and only) time in their history.

Can see this happening all over again because we want to give people time.

As it currently stands it won't go to the last game.

And as it currently stands, we are unlikely to have anyone in the penalty box for a penalty to be given. Although granted it could be handball from a long kick from George.

They all need to stand up and be counted, starting on Sunday.

However, I can see McMahon wrestling the ball from Marlon King and smashing it high into the Kop. Or Doyle deciding it would be a good time for Marcus Williams to get his first professional goal. He tries to "dink" it and the standing keeper casually catches it with one hand.

I have always thought Givens was given an unfairly bad press. He was Peters' only signing and had a dream debut, scoring 1 and making 2 in a 3-2 win over Charlton at the Lane (and they were promoted at the end of the season). He scored 2 more goals before the end of the season and always looked dangerous. At least he had the guts to take the pen and it is a bit unfair that he is only judged on that miss.

I was at that game. There was a pitch invasion after he missed, and another when the final whistle blew. It got pretty nasty - Blades fans attacking coppers and opposition fans (there were a few Walsall fans there too as their fate also rested on that game). I remember police horses on the pitch too, and baton charges. My other recollection is grown men crying, literally bawling their eyes out on the kop.

Also has anyone ever thought that had we scored Walsall could have gone up other end and scored?

Surely Danny Webber has already claimed this ignomy following the disasterous failure to score a goal against Wigan?

Be interesting to know how often there has been in a relegation dogfight on the last game of the season when two teams have played each other and one of them could have stayed up depending on the result. We seem to have done it twice and screwed up on both occassions.

Unless Coventry really start playing crap I can't see that happening this season.

Givens is one of the piggies biggest hereos, i know blokes who would have a statue of him put up at the sty if they could

Agreed..John Matthews was the designated penalty taker and Givens only took it because nobody else was willing
