So is that it for strikers?

David McGoldrick and Conor Washington in on frees. Pretty disappointing, IMO. I'm sure Wilder will feel the same. Not sure I can be too critical as it seems like a slightly mad window but we knew firepower was an issue after last season and we haven't really solved it, have we?

If people were told at the start of the summer the only strikers we'd get in would be McGoldrick and Washington on frees they'd have absolutely lost their shit...

Very very uninspiring and disappointing.
We desperately need someone upfront that can bang the goals in, and the boat hasn't really been untied, never mind pushed out.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens, atleast we will have SuperChed back come Jan.

Agree with the OP. The squads undoubtably stronger than last year, but we’re missing the exciting signing of a forward.
Can’t see it being due to lack of effort by those involved, we just couldn’t get them over the line and that’s both frustrating and disappointing.

All in all, we should look to improve on last years position with some confidence though, and who knows where we maybe in Jan.

It is slightly disappointing, but assuming we had £4-5m to spend on a striker (Waghorn bid) then who could we really have signed, who would be significantly more exciting that McGoldrick or Washington?

I know Ricky will probably say Adam Armstrong, but I doubt that would have been met with universal approval either.

I did post that before Johnson was confirmed, which made it a little better.
Aslong as we can stay in contention until January, then we should be good.

yeah cos its not like bill and leon were among the top scorers in the division last season or anything..
hold on.. ;)
And Leon has been unstoppable this season so far hasn't he....Oh, hold on!:p

Over the years I can’t think of many land mark signings that have done really well, every time we’ve broke the bank and spent as we see as good money there’s been disappointment perhaps Beattie was the odd one out possible Don Hutchinson? I’m racking my brains for ‘that’ special player that has made such a big difference.

I think many are underestimating the strikers we already have. Clarke just needs one to drop and Sharp looks a man possessed. I reckon half of the managers in this league would happily take one of those off our hands. McG knows the league and is versatile, Washington and Woodburn both have a point to prove and will be hungry to do so. Not the end of the world is it lads?

And not to be a twat about it but I do seem to recall defence and midfield being touted as far bigger issues on here, especially in the second half of last season. We are undoubtedly better in both of those areas now with the signings we have made. Up front has (arguably) improved just slightly as Washington is (imo) better than Lavery and probably Ched, whilst McG looks better than Donaldson. As I said in another thread, al lot hangs on how Woodburn steps up as our short term replacement for the wonderkid, bearing in mind he is settling in and it will only likely come in flashes.

In contention for promotion?

My main aim for the summer was a huge improvement over Evans in midfield. With a better more functional midfield the strikers will get more goals.

Looks like Wilder had to tweak his midfield last season and the beginning of this and went with a 3 man midfield without Duffy/Woodburn starting. We get Ollie Norwood in and Duffy and Woodburn start. We were hampered due to not having the right midfielder to play alongside Fleck and an attacking midfielder.

If we have spunked our budget on Norwood and not a striker I am all for it. I also think Washington could be a Warnock esc type striker who will do better than expected.

Well said. Improvements have been done as per priority.

All of this talk of equating ambition with expenditure is a complete joke. We are in Sheffield, we are new to the Championship and our owners are not billionaires.

We are overachieving because we have a manager with a good football brain and an even better business brain.

Our location and our recent history will not attract top players and our finances are insufficient to bribe them.

We are slowly building a side that will progressively attract better players and become more attractive to big investors.

Encouraging our club to spend what it can’t afford on players that will not achieve what we ultimately want is lemming mentality.

This manager knows what he is doing - he doesn’t expect miracles from the owners but he knows how to push them to a level of commitment that can slowly take us where we want to be.

Don’t encourage greed to break our steady progress back to Magic Times

err do you mind
we’ll have less of the sensible well reasoned posts please :D

Hopefully our much improved midfield will provide the proper service for the strikers.

I too don't think there was a lack of effort, but I think some of it was misplaced.

Who needs strikers ? 3-0 up and not a strikers goal in sight :-)

Sharp scores... first goal from a striker in the last 7 .... compared to last season when we relied on the front line for all the goals. This is fantastic
