So is that it for strikers?

David McGoldrick and Conor Washington in on frees. Pretty disappointing, IMO. I'm sure Wilder will feel the same. Not sure I can be too critical as it seems like a slightly mad window but we knew firepower was an issue after last season and we haven't really solved it, have we?

No ,maybe we should have bid a club record for an Ipswich striker or chased villa and Southampton players

Don't believe the hype.

It was clean sheets which did for us last season not goals.

Same this season...

I'm comfortable not spunking money on strikers so long as we learn to keep clean sheets.

If people were told at the start of the summer the only strikers we'd get in would be McGoldrick and Washington on frees they'd have absolutely lost their shit...

But neither Waghorn, Hogan, pretty much everyone linked with in fact weren't bums on seats signings, even at our financial level.

The annoying thing was the £5m bid bit. Who at the club put that out? Because it's impossible to believe now. A la Coady.

Very very uninspiring and disappointing.
We desperately need someone upfront that can bang the goals in, and the boat hasn't really been untied, never mind pushed out.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens, atleast we will have SuperChed back come Jan.

To be honest of those touted as realistic prospects, I don't really see how they would be huge improvements on what we have now the window has shut, they would have satiated the "weersmunnehgone?" crowd but that's about it.

I believe we probably did bid that in some way (maybe fee+wages) but our wages were probably miles off and the transfer team would've gone in heavy with the 'come play for us, we play nice football and have a good manager' angle rather than 'we'll pay you handsomely' angle, which unfortunately for us (maybe) is the angle that works.

I’m sure Wilder has never thought “Maybe if I get player X, the fans will lose their shit.”

He’s as frustrated as we are, but that’s the market.

We have what we have. We’re still Blades and we’ll still fight and believe and back the boys.

I’m more worried that we considered bidding that much for Waghorn if true.

Agree with the OP. The squads undoubtably stronger than last year, but we’re missing the exciting signing of a forward.
Can’t see it being due to lack of effort by those involved, we just couldn’t get them over the line and that’s both frustrating and disappointing.

All in all, we should look to improve on last years position with some confidence though, and who knows where we maybe in Jan.

My main aim for the summer was a huge improvement over Evans in midfield. With a better more functional midfield the strikers will get more goals.

Looks like Wilder had to tweak his midfield last season and the beginning of this and went with a 3 man midfield without Duffy/Woodburn starting. We get Ollie Norwood in and Duffy and Woodburn start. We were hampered due to not having the right midfielder to play alongside Fleck and an attacking midfielder.

If we have spunked our budget on Norwood and not a striker I am all for it. I also think Washington could be a Warnock esc type striker who will do better than expected.

Don’t see how we can be disappointed when washy has’nt even kicked a ball yet,
Goals from all over the park like last weekend is better than relying on a striker,
Anyway David Mc has impressed me when he’s played, great first touch and awareness, was’nt Fleck a freebie?

Deadline day couldn't have come at a better time for the club.

Some good results = lots of people willing to defend a lacklustre profit making transfer window.

So we can’t afford a ready made striker. Perhaps until the ownership is sorted.

On that basis Washington is the next best move - a striker with untapped potential. Sadly we’ll need more next summer and we can’t bank on players coming good next time.

Prior to the Norwich game, Tufty - pointedly - remarked that Rhodes "earns three times what any of his players earn".

Now there's both good and bad in that fact.

Good, that United are getting good results for relatively little money, but bad because such a modest wage structure means that bringing in a proven, 20-goal-a-season striker is nigh-on impossible.

This is purely a guestimate, but judging by the £5 million ceiling and the fact that he belatedly inquired about Joao, leads me to think we're probably looking at a £15 000 - £20 000-a-week wage limit in the striking department. Bearing that in mind, the desired marquee signing was always out of reach.

This is why Wood left Leeds, because even in the Champ he could have earnt at least twice what Leeds were paying him.

If we could have got a younger striker that would improve the position at a relatively reasonable amount of cash, do you not think we would have done so? As is, we've got a choice of Sharp/Clarke/McG/Washington/Woodburn, which for this season seems perfectly fine.

I suppose we could have spunked a load of munneh on a marginal improvement at the expense of not getting Norwood and hence more chances for big munneh striker...

It's disappointing in that 2 up front seemed to be our main target and with the improved budget and Brooks money we expected a 'name' to come in.

However given we spent nothing fee wise to get McGoldrick and Washington on frees is excellent business.

Overall we've brought in a very good centre half and an excellent central midfielder for decent fees and on loan a supposedly top premiership youngster and a wide man who may or may not work out. We lost Brooks but cleared out plenty of dead wood too. Not a bad window all told.

Regarding the front line Id be spending the next 3 months trying to identify a lower league or foreign striker who has the potential to make it. I'd rather spend 3 or 4m on an Ollie Watkins type and accept it may not work than double that on a Hogan or

Just what are we expecting here , a team to win promotion ? Really? If we can't afford Championship wages now how on earth do you expect the owners to pay premiership ones ?
If we did get there will they be expecting to stay there on a shoestring again, then take the big payout when we inevitably come back down and then sell the club?
Let's be realistic here, we are what we have always been a good top six championship team.
Let's not go all Wendy on this.....

umm not me.. i was quite happy with what we’ve got already
i don’t get the obsession with having to have this ‘marquee signing’.. like we’re not worthy if we don’t buy someone we don’t actually need

i reckon we could be an established prem outfit but we have to do it properly we have to build up gradually rather than buying a team and going bankrupt in the process
see s6 for further details
