Amongst all the "Who's worthy to take control" of the Blades speculation, it might be worth recalling that here is a guy, and depending on who you believe, is worth anything from the lower rungs of being a billionaire to a figure that's far, far higher. Therein lies a fact that should not be ignored, that when we were so close to establishing this club amongst the favourites for promotion that this opportunity was not grasped at the following transfer window.

If I recall, one of the Prince's objectives in accepting the role of co-owner of the Blades was to consider selling as and when the club had become a Premiership team. So no apparent connection to our club, but presumably possessed of the view that to sell and make a profit was something that made complete sense to the Prince.
Chances to gain promotion don't come around often, and for this billionaire to miss a chance of securing a place in the Premiership seems at best foolish or, and here I must choose my words carefully, a carefully considered move that only the Prince can answer.

Being so close, and don't forget we were momentarily top of this division, to the Premiership seemed an ideal opportunity to close this deal. A larger budget for Wilder to buy the type of player(s) capable of lifting our performances would have seemed the type of support that the board, or at least those directors capable of offering this level of support, would have made. But not the Prince. He resisted this chance to push us forward, instead hoping that the relatively meagre amounts he'd become used to providing would do the job once again. A calculation that ensured we'd miss out on a chance to reach the giddy heights of the Premiership. What does that tell us about the Prince's objectives?

Be worried about the upcoming rendezvous venue then.

Our franchise could be on the move.

Baltimore Blades or Cincinatti Cutlers :(

But, the idea was that the prince contributed equally with McCabe once we got into the Championship. The rumour mill was suggesting the Prince wanted to throw cash at it in Jan, but McCabe wouldn't match what he wanted to invest.

Who knows.

You're right Scooter, who really knows? But given where we were, not to take this chance, and I realise that it's a gamble, when we were so close seems counter to being ambitious. I've no idea what the nuts and bolts are of their agreement, but it strikes me that not to support our manager was foolish or, possibly, unconcerned.

The guys clearly very analytical and persistent.

Maybe we should be less dismissive of him.

After all, most seem to be backing McCabe again, but most of his managerial hirings/mistakes seem to have had very little prior analysis

Agree, considering the riches that the Prem brings, you would think that one would want to take a bit of a gamble. After all, that's the only way of recouping any losses you've made. Even if it was 10m...

Agree mate. I know the accusation can be made that it's easy to spend someone else's money, and of course it's true. But why oh why would anyone want to get involved with a football club if they're not willing to go that extra mile and make the possible probable?

Actually he said himself when he joined that his wealth was nothing like that, (I seem to recall between £100 -200 million). Not poor but not in the top league of wealthy owners. His family, uncles mainly, are filthy rich, but he isn't. UTB

You may be right, but to use an often heard phrase, he would say that wouldn't he. And if that was the case, why on earth did McCabe bring the Prince on board if he wasn't wealthier than you suggest?

The Prince has been described as being far wealthier elsewhere (please don't ask, but there's a thread on here that states the Prince is worth several billion). But whatever his actual wealth, if he's of similar financial capability to KM I can't understand McCabe's thinking in sharing ownership of this club. If he can't actually push us forward, what exactly is the point of the Prince where SUFC are concerned?

In other news, a big boat sailing out of Southampton sank in the Atlantic, a man - two actually - walked on the moon... or a Hollywood film set and Elvis is still dead.

What I'm stating is that there appears to be varying evidence, or opinion, about what constitutes the Prince's wealth. If he's a billionaire then the obvious questions should be asked about his involvement with United. If he's worth far less, it would be helpful to understand what McCabe's thinking was in bringing him on board?
Was it simply to meet the overhead that is integral to the everyday running of SUFC, or was it to give this team a significant lift where transfers are concerned?

Rather than conflicting opinions, it would be helpful if it was confirmed one way or the other.

There have been numerous articles and comment during the Princes five years with the Club, including his own statements, that would suggest he is in the millionaire category. In fact consensus seems to put him at around the same level of personal wealth as Kevin McCabe in the £1.4 million band.

When the Prince first came on Board it was announced he would be funding transfers and a flurry happened with the signings of Baxter and Cuvelier. The message seemed to be that the Blades would be going for promotion in the first year and then consolidate in the championship for a few years with the aim of Premiership in 5 years. Statements from KM implied that the Prince's investment would increase significantly when we were promoted to the championship and then again incrementally when we got to the Premiership. No-one envisaged being in Division 1 for the next four years.

What has happened is the investment in the team has been virtually swallowed up by having to manage trading losses as a result of remaining in the third tier. KM has matched that investment but we now appear to be at a cross roads where either or both of the parties are having second thoughts about continuing on the same financial basis.

If the Prince was a billionaire then I doubt there would be the prevaricating that is going on the moment. It seems we have two millionaires at odds with each other and without the funds to take the Club further on their own. In other words a stalemate and that is what has caused CW to express his concerns.

That £1.4 million should be £140 million. No wonder we've been buying at Aldi :D
